I got a ton of questions about my last video, so I wanted to show you how I put together this Canon M50 rig in real time. today I’m going to walk you though my professional #M50 video rig build. I start with a smallrig #canon M50 cage and then build out a complete rig to improve handling, stability, audio, lighting, power supply and the overall shooting experience. Now I can use my #canonm50 to shoot for hours, without ever having to worry about battery power again.
We'll talk about lenses, different cameras, the new Canon R5 and I'll also answer the questions you asked in the community tab!

@@TechGearTalk 🤣🤣 Btw, I was really confused between Sigma 16mm & 30mm. I need it for sit down talking head shots. Is 16mm too wide?

It depends on the framing you want. Also, will the mic be off camera? Personally, I would go with the 30, but it will be too far if the mic is on the camera. Hope this helps

@@TechGearTalk Yes.. I will be using the seprate mic recording into the external recorder. I don't want to show much of my room. I think the 30mm will also double as a good interview lens, as I am planning to do that as well. I wish I could personally try them both before buying.

Hey! Thanks so much for reading and answering my comment! I was ecstatic to hear my name from a guy with 80k+ subs! :) I’m a substitute teacher, so I also apologize often for not knowing how to pronounce names when I do attendance for classes. And with the students, I normally tell them my last name rhymes with Hawaiian. Sibayan-Hawaiian :) speaking of names, how do you spell yours? Haha 😅 I’ve been saving up and am getting the eos RP this Tuesday! :) So as you’ve been consistently putting out content for the M50, I was wondering about why you had built around that camera. But now I see how capable and a great bang-for-buck value this rig is! I’m inspired to use similar tools for my camera. Thank you so much! I’m hopefully going to use my camera as a webcam with the new beta to stream Sunday services live; I’m thinking the battery life tips might really come in handy too :) Looking forward to more videos!

Like your videos, admire your passion for the videography. One thing, I'd do differently is, I'd attach the wooden handle grip on the left side, because on the right side there is already a grip. Also, the left hand is mostly idle while shooting, whereas, the right hand is being used to work different controls of the camera.

@merrette
@merrette 3 жыл бұрын
The new version of the Smallrig cage for the M50 is about useless. If you use a top handle you loose the shoe on the frame because the handle mount blocks it now. You then are left with still only one cold shoe and NONE of the attachments they sell will work on this cage. The shoe extension that they will try to sell you for a second shoe will bind on the front dial rendering it inoperable. Also the shoe is a one way mount so if you have a audio transmitter or something with a combination pocket clip/shoe attachment that needs to enter from the back towards the front you're screwed because the only way to mount it, it will be facing the wrong way, in my case with the antenna towards me and the connections towards the subject. Terrible design and their support is horrible, wait for an email from China and then they just jerk you around.

My M50, without a cage, is too lightweight to work with my Flycam 3000. I suppose I just needed a little more weight to make the Flycam work with the M50. However, if I embrace the Liziqi method of locked-off shots only, then I don't have to worry about Flycams, Steadycams or complex gimbals.

Copied your battery set up (it was kind of pain cause the cord you linked was out of stock and then with COVID delivery was pushed back a month) but in the end it was worth it. I shot a wedding this past weekend and had my M50 set up on a tripod as a back up camera. It ran the majority of the day taking long wide angle clips of everything while I used my main camera for detailed shots. I only used about ¾ of one battery on the M50 all day, roughly 7 hours. I’ve done other events in the past with similar timelines and used three or four regular batteries. It was great being able to just set it up on the tripod and not have to worry about the battery being changed multiple times.

Hi. No, the X-T4 is a much more powerful camera than the M50 in essentially every aspect. In the US, it's also 3x the price.

Tech Gear Talk Thanks for getting back to me. I’m just trying to decide on a camera to up my content production to make it more cinematic. Little overwhelming with all the options, between canon, Sony, and now Fuji. Do you feel the xt4 is comparable to say a Sony a7iii?

Yes, that’s a good comparison.

Tech Gear Talk have you used the a7iii? If so, I’m sure both probably have pros and cons, and I get would come to individual wants and needs, but I would just like to know which one you feel out of the two produces the more cinematic footage, or better video. I understand that it might not be as cut and dry as that as well. Thank you

I've seen so many people trashing on the 120fps 720p on the M50 around KZbin. I guess it's not as sharp as 1080p, but honestly it looks pretty darn decent to my eye. Throwing some 120fps footage inbetween 60fps 1080p in my opinion you can totally get away with 720p and unless someone is specifically looking for resolution, I think many people won't even notice.

Thank you for the breakdown, it helped give me perspective. I was torn between this setup and AMaeTV's m50 setup. But looking at hers again, the gimbal is already itself its own grip handle and it holds a cell phone which I use as a monitor through the Canon connectivity app (I can use Magic Lantern for exposure %, among other features like 6K video & I can use Cinestyle to downloads LUTs, but I prefer to avoid presets & LUTs). Plus after doing the math, it comes out way cheaper & way more ergonomic for my hands. Some of this video's rig items were provided in grams, some in ounces, some in pounds in the links, so I converted for all 3 to determine total weight & cost (as of 5/18/20)... *🔹Sagi's M50 Setup:* Cage is 155g/5.47oz/0.34lb *($69)* Deity Mic is 143g/5.04oz/0.315lb *($199)* Wood Handle is 210g/7.41oz/0.46lb *($99)* Top Handle Cold Shoe is 180g/6.35oz/0.40lb *($40)* Godox Light is 360g/12.7oz/0.8lb *($85)* Light Mount Adapter is 68g/2.4oz/0.15lb *($28)* Video Monitor is 950g/33.5oz/2.09lbs *($230)* Power Adapter is 90.7g/3.2oz/0.2lb *($60)* Sony Battery is 540g/19.05oz/1.2lbs *($33 for 2)* USB Coupler is 60g/2.11oz/0.13lb *($24)* *^This entire setup weighs 2.75kg or 6.08lb for $867* *🔹Alicia's M50 Setup* FeiyuTech G6 Max 3-Axis Handheld Gimbal is 665g/1.48lbs. It replaces Cage + Wooden Handle + Top Handle Cold Shoe for handling, stability, & grip; the 9 hour internal output battery replaces Sony Battery + Adapter + Coupler; my Cell Phone + Connectivity App (free) + Magic Lantern (free) replaces video monitor. All for *$229* at less than 2lbs, with a flexible silicone handle for a more comfortable grip and without the cable nest. If I add light ($89) and Rode Wireless Go mic ($199), then that brings me to *$517* which saves me *$350* for a nice new lens or 6 vintage ones.

I definitely like that setup (and thank you for doing the legwork). From my point of view, it's for a different purpose (vlogging) and it won't work with most of the lenses I use because of the size and form-factor. I like the idea of using magic lantern for sure. One thing I like about the rig I put together is that it is modular, so if you only need battery, or only side handle and battery, etc. you can pick and choose. Both are good options for sure - thank you again!

@TechGearTalk
@TechGearTalk 4 жыл бұрын
Essentially it would depend on the lens. You'll most likely need a cage or a riser plate so that the lens does hit the gimbal place (unless you're using the 22mm f/2). If the lens is heavy, you may need a smallrig quick release plate and some counter weights to offset it. I use it all the time with this gimbal: kzbin.info/www/bejne/q6PYmIt6nJibpK8

@@TechGearTalk great! I'm using a Canon 17-40 & the Ronin SC. Currently the camera is really far back so it touches the roll motor. Hopefully with the added weight from this cage I can put the camera forward a little bit. Do you know if the DJI counterweights can be mounted on this cage?
@TechGearTalk

Hi Sagie (Apologies if I spelt your name wrong 😬) Would you say that your m50 rig there can compete with the C100 you have there? Or Can you create nearly as cinematic footage as with the c100 with the m50? Thanks Aaron
@TechGearTalk
@TechGearTalk 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Aaron - it's not going to compete because the C100MKII is really an outstanding cinema camera, so as long as you added a mic and light. it has a lot of advantages. The M50 does have some advantages like face detection :) Hope this helps, Sagi

Appreciate you joining. The easiest way to stream with guests is StreamYard. (I use OBS but then you have to figure out how to get guests on).
