this is a awesome comparison, I started with a mirrorless camera (sony zve10). I now use a canon r6mii so I have never really used the dslr style every day. I will say tho, my wife has a sl3 and it's a night and day difference even compared to my zve10. the zve10 was cheaper and still blew the sl3 away in both video and photo. so I really don't understand why people are so hesitant in switching great video!

I ‘upgraded’ from the 70D to the R50, and despite the loss of weather sealing & the battery switch (which honestly isn’t as big a deal as some folks made it out to be, lol), absolutely everything else was a massive improvement. The only thing I did was add a small cage to improve the grip & add a bit of protection, but overall, even with the cage, it’s still much smaller & lighter than the 70D. It’s faster, the autofocus is worlds better, the evf is a game changer (imo), the low light performance is WAY better, and as someone with physical disabilities, the weight savings is a blessing. Now, when I see people recommending a DSLR like the 70D to a complete newbie, when they have the budget for the R50, I cringe (yes, there’s a lack of R mount glass for the APS-C, but I’m still exclusively using EF & it has actually given my current lenses new life!). It’s going to be one of those cameras that people eventually wake up to & start recommending, but because of the price point it’s often foolishly overlooked.

I moved to Mirrorless in 2013, One thing you might notice in time and it won't be obvious is that you may lose the ability to mentally see what a stop of light looks like. With a mirrorless camera, you see the changes in the viewfinder, with a DSLR you have to mentally visualize a stop or look at the image to see the exposure change. With that being said I think the advantages of mirrorless far outweigh the disadvantages.
@FilNenna3 ай бұрын
@KevinRusso that's a really good point. The optical finder also let us assess the shadows and highlights at the same time. Now we are limited to seeing only what the sensor can see.

The brightness, the refresh rate, the exposure sim function let me know exactly how my photo will turn out. Combined with dof preview...im in heaven. Bonus...my ef-l lenses focus fast and are sharp. Throw in touch flippy/ swivel screen and wow! My only gripe is...now i dont have any camera gripes.

5D MKIV to R5...that is a BIG and lovely upgrade, especially for focus speed and accuracy and recognising people! The biggest win for me is the exposure simulation in the electronic viewfinder, especially at weddings when the pressure is on and you have the confidence that you know that you are getting the shot you want for an end result. The biggest downside for me is how the mirrorless cameras handle flash photography. You cannot rely on exposure simulation in the EVF when using on-camera flash (if you do, you see what the exposure will look like without flash and if you turn it off, the EVF compensates for low light and brightens the view so you can see well enough to compose and see what you are pointing at). Either way, you are back to only knowing what your photo with flash will look like once you have taken it. For flash photography, I would gladly go back to optical viewfinder and my 5DIV. I do not agree that the RF lenses are always heavier than EF. For instance, EF 70-200 f2.8L III weight 1440g, RF 70-200 f2.8L weight 1070g - which is a LOT lighter! The EF 24-104 F4L weight 795g with RF 24-104 F4L weight 700g. Having to add RF-EF converter, makes the EF on R5 even heavier, as you said. When you use the native RF lenses, they are generally smaller and lighter (with the exception of the high end or very fast primes).

Absolutely. I shoot predominantly with flash and I haven't quite got used to the evf in that situation. Its a shame we have to choose between eye-detect focus OR an optical viewfinder.

As a mirrorless user since the launch of the R6, there's quite a lot of very interesting points here. During the DSLR Days, I only used entry level APSC Bodys, so my change in user experience to the R6 was extensive, but hadn't much to do with DSLR to mirrorless. One point I noticed though: The Videoswitching on the R5 should not reflect badly on mirrorless cameras as a whole. The R5 is pretty much the dumbest and most unpractical way of implementing Video, I have ever seen :D Pretty much anything from canon since then, had some kind of a switch, while the R6 from the same generation had video as an option on the physical mode wheel.

You can map (customise) going from stills to video and back again on the Mfn button. Very fast. Use the shutter button for spot focus so you can use the joystick on the back at the same time. Use the back buttons for various iterations of eye AF so you don't have to use the joystick. You can have 3 ways to AF.

I moved from a Nikon D7200 to a Fuji X-S10 and couldn't be happier with the switch to mirrorless. There are lots of great benefits like the IBIS, video capability, live view and focus peaking, the big difference in body size and weight, etc. But probably my favourite thing is the massive amount of lenses that are available to me now, both in budget friendly 3rd party x-mount lenses, but also all the vintage glass as my tele is now a Canon FD 80-200 F4L

there is that red button for quickly switching to video mode. May be of use for you. For a while now the button has been set to "no function" via the "C.Fn3" -> "Customize buttons" configuration (can you tell I am not a video photographer?). One of the positives of a mirrorless is the fact that the sensor can be mounted further to the front - making lens design easier to reduce size, etc. (I'm not an optical engineer, but that is my understanding). So I propose that making the lens adapter possible isn't the real reason (could have made this shorter and I'm sure no one would have complained).
@findefuchs3 ай бұрын
Actually it's the other way around😂 DSLR lenses can be a lot smaller because there is more space between the last element and the sensor. Modern mirrorless lenses get smaller and there is basically no real difference anymore but in the early days of mirrorless the lenses were quite big and there were virtually no pancakes around...

comparing the 70D to an R6 i miss the dedicated buttons like iso, focus mode and Slow-/ Hispeed shooting modes. Everything takes more button presses except video where i now can just press record instead of needing to switch to video mode - although being with automatic settings in non-fancy log. The video on Canons DSLRs always felt like upscaled to 1080p @ 30fps and now i get downsampled 4K 60 fps that is sooo crisp and feels like a huge technical leap for a canon camera in my price range. I just feel like the L lenses lost their glory. Being now made out of easily scratchable plastic and often having lost internal focus + zoom. Even worse that now everything is focus by wire which is not at the point where it feels natural and snappy enough for the times the much improved autofocus has troubles. The whole Lens design department seems to have lost their pride with RF and now you have prime lenses that wont work until extended and start at f/11, Lens elements out of plastic polymers where they previously boasted about being able to grow huge fluorite elements themselves. all while prices have shot up where it does not make sense for a hobbyist like me. But EF is fine for me, the EF lens adapter even allows for a single drop-in polarizer instead of buying different filter sizes or adapter rings for all my lenses.
@FilNennaАй бұрын
GREAT POINTS! I overlooked those top-plate buttons and I miss them, too. I've not got into RF lenses yet as I don't feel limited by using EF versions. Sad to hear they are more expensive but lower build quality. Hopefully the optical quality makes up for it?
