Keith Cooper looks at making prints with a heavy fine art paper on the Canon Pixma PRO-200 printer. Using the free Canon PPL software (Mac and Win) to print a black and white A3+ borderless print. The particular paper is Canon Fine Art Museum Etching (350gsm/570um). Using an ICC profile for the paper, Keith discusses the effects of viewing lighting and paper choice on black and white and colour prints when using a printer like the PRO-200 with its dye based inks.
There is a detailed PRO-200 review by Keith at

Mike Harman. More good information Thanks. Last contacted you about bad prints from C1 and you put me onto Epson print layout,Perfect. I then thought I would try a fine art paper and decided on Hahnemuhle Photo Rag Baryta 315 using my old but good epson pro3800. First results were poor and as Hahnemühle papers are not listed on the 3800 I used their recommended media setting with their ICC profile not good . Anyway two days later I found a combination of setting that are really good, the media setting is epson ultra premium presentation and the Hahnemuhle icc profile using colour charts from you site. Since then I have tested 4 other papers, non art and have found they all print better using media settings and profiles that were not recommended by the paper manufacturer namely Pemajet. This is the first time in 35 years of home printing that I am really happy with the quality especially on the Baryta 315, the colours really stand out.

Thanks for the info. I'm not surprised about the media settings - I have in the past discovered 'wrong' setting suggested for a paper. If you get a chance, let PermaJet know what you've found, since with lots of printers and papers, mistakes do happen - If you do and don't get a response, email me and I'll ensure it gets to the right person ;-)

@@KeithCooper I don't really think PermaJet settings were wrong I-have been sort of ok with the results until I had to find best settings for the Baryta 315 which led me to experiment with the settings for PermaJet. Its early days with my trial and error testing because different photographs look different on different paper and in different viewing lights. A real surprise was to print on high gloss paper using a matt media setting and it looks fine .I think have too much spare time on my hands and its fun printing photographs.

Would be great to get more thoughts on color FA prints on this vs the P300/1000. Which has deeper blacks, richer colors, is the surface more or less delicate, is the a difference in durability? I have both the 200 and the 1000. I am more and more settling on Hahnemule papers because I am finding the combo of their custom canon media type profiles and icc colors profiles are resulting in exceptional prints on both printers, it even seems they have remade their p1000 profiles. Better than the custom profiles I have made. Some of the other paper manufacturers aren’t putting in that level of effort.
@KeithCooper
@KeithCooper 3 жыл бұрын
No difference of note in surface with FA papers - it's printing B&W where the 300/1000 easily wins out. Well, that and Baryta style papers which I like. The 200 wins out on shiny papers and in some art papers, but only when neutrality and illuminant metamerism isn't a problem. See my 200/300 comparison video for some more Also see the various numbers in the 200 and 300 reviews/articles The measurement data is not stuff I tend to include in videos, which are only meant to augment the full (written) reviews www.northlight-images.co.uk/canon-pro-200-printer-review/ www.northlight-images.co.uk/canon-pro-300-printer-review/

this was a very clear demonstration. I followed all these steps. I connected the printer to the laptop using wi fi. I finished with a print with vertical lines and the colours are very flat. Very disappointed. This is a replacement of the canon iP8750 which was giving me better results. I try to find out what went wrong. I think it says Air print, but expect this is so because I use the wifi. By the way there were no cables with the printer.

No, lines are likely due to needing an alignment/nozzle check The airprint driver is the wrong one on the laptop - it will usually give poorer results, but not lines. Hi Keith. I recently bought the pro-200 and I'm learning a lot from your videos. I think it will be very useful for newbies (like me) a video of how to print from photoshop or how to export the image to sent it to the Profesilnal Print & Layout. It's a JPG with quality 100 enough to get the best result or we should go TIFF? Also, i bought some Hahnemuhle fine art paper sample packs, should I use Heavy Weigh Art paper in media settings with all of them? Even with the glossy ones, like the baryta? Thanks!
@KeithCooper
@KeithCooper Жыл бұрын
It's tricky for me to do precise guides - to be specific enough means they are no good for others. For example, I've not used a win PC this century... I'm afraid my videos alway concentrate more on the why you do something and avoid any step by step guides. Have you read the actual [written] review? The written articles always have more detail than videos, especially since they can be edited/corrected/updated. www.northlight-images.co.uk/canon-pro-200-printer-review/ As to using PPL from Photoshop, it should install as a plugin, and be accessible via the automate menu, so the file type choice should be a moot one...

Sorry, this is a known limitation of many older and lower end Canon printers. It is (for me) one of the major advances of the PRO-200/300. You may be able to use a matte setting (I've not tried this) but then your icc profiles are wrong.

Thanks for the videos. This looks like a superb photography printer. If I were to invest in something like this for the main purpose of photography prints, would It make sense to do more basic printing on this - a4 docs etc - or would it be better to have a separate printer for the purpose of general documents. I currently don’t own a printer and am in the market for a photography printer and a general use one. Thank you.
@KeithCooper
@KeithCooper 3 жыл бұрын
It is very good for glossy colour - not quite up to the quality of the PRO-300 for B&W - I should have the full review within the week. Whilst it prints documents just fine, it doesn't have features like duplex printing. Fine for the occasional few pages, but at home my wife has an 'all-in-one' style printer on the network which I'll use for office work. A lot depends on how much printing of different sorts you want to do - the odd document or two keeps the printer more regularly used, which is important for any inkjet printer.

No, I normally print from Photoshop, using my own custom profiles. The Canon software is used as an example, mainly because it's free Interesting software, but potentially a lot more work for results I'm inclined to think would not be much different. Now, RIPs and the like do still have their place, but not I'd suggest, as much for typical users of a printer like the PRO-200. Years ago I was much happier to suggest 3rd party drivers/software. But these days printers are much more consistent and many of the reasons for using 3rd party software are nowhere near as compelling for many users. That said - I'd be happy to look at the software if they supplied it. I'm always willing to give new techniques a go!

@KeithCooper
@KeithCooper 3 жыл бұрын
Depends on the stock being coated for inkjet use and the size needed. Also on whether the cards are double sided? I'm testing a double sided lustre paper, but it is a special paper with coatings on each side. Also as a photo paper it would not take much handling. Also the ink carts in the 200 (and 300) are quite small for any serious (business) use - not a problem for some, but worth noting. So, looking at a pack of playing cards in my desk drawer - no I could not see making them myself on a PRO-200. This then makes me wonder... just what you mean by 'playing cards'?

Hi Keith, I'm not profesional but a very enthusiast photographer writing from Catalonia-Spain (forgive any gramatical mistake). I have a Canon all-in-one MX925 I use for everything, including some photos with acceptable color and resolution except B&W, just the kind of photography I really love. For that reason, and because I want to print on bigger formats than A4, I finally decided buying a real photo printer. I've been following your articles and videos about Canon Pro-200, Pro-300 and even Epson P700 -don't worry I'm not going to ask which one would you recoman though you are free to do that if you wanted so-. My doubt is whether it worth to pay 800€ for the Pro-300 instead 500€ for the Pro-200. I can't say how many A3/3+ I'll print but at least 30 or so per year and many more on smaller sizes, mostly for my pleasure and gifts (only a few will be sold). I know longevity and 2 more ink cartridges are the main differencies between both printers but I'm not totally sure whether the final resolts are really visibles unless you put them side by side into an exhaust comparative. Is B&W printing clearly better and easier to get from P300? Are you going to do a comparative? Many thanks for your reviews and articles.

Sorry, rather too many things to unpick in a simple reply here... but CMYK is absolutely not relevant for a printer like this - it is an RGB device and needs RGB data to print. Start off reading my pro-200 review? www.northlight-images.co.uk/canon-pro-200-printer-review/ Try printing with the canon PPL software and using correct profiles for the paper. I'm a landscape/wildlife photographer who sells prints regularly. Is this printer and it's dye-based ink good enough for selling commercially? Or would I be doing a dis-service to clients?
@KeithCooper

It depends on your market - personally I would use pigment ink and use that fact as a bit of my marketing. Nothing wrong with the prints from the 200, especially on some papers, but I also do B&W and there pigment is superior

Really appreciate your Canon Pro-200 videos. Is your B&H coupon/link for the Pro-200 good with B&H in the USA or only UK? Of course, "catch-22", your web site needs to be available for me to access that link. 😁

I downloaded a driver, but I cannot find the software for the printer, on paint do I choose the Heavyweight Fine Art option? On the mobile app, I don't have a fine art option. One side is slightly smoother, is that the print side or the other? Is the print side the side where the instructions are, or the other side?
@KeithCooper

Check the manual for the latest links - note that the software is only for computers, not tablets/mobile AFAIK there is no high quality printing support from mobile type devices. ij.manual.canon/ij/webmanual/WebPortal/PTA/pta_guide.html?lng=en&type=app-gd2&app=ppl What is the 'paint' you mention? is this some software? You need to pick the media setting (and profile for the paper in use) - see details in my review: www.northlight-images.co.uk/canon-pro-200-printer-review/ Note that I only ever put the real detail into the main articles - the videos are mainly here to support the written stuff. Did you not try the damp finger test in the article? If it's an art paper for inkjet use it will always work. Ah, for the media - none of the above are suitable, which is odd. Matt photo paper is probably closest, but still essentially wrong. I'm afraid that 'print quality' and mobile applications generally don't go together. There is no consistent colour management for example.

Hi there Keith, Im having some troubles with my canon pro 200 printer for my darker art prints, and I'm looking through your videos for some advice but thought I may as well ask here too. For some reason whenever I print very dark borderless artwork, with totally black backgrounds, it seems to have a lot of waxy smudges on the surface if you look up close. Ive tried all the ways of cleaning it with the system maintenance, but its still not any better. I print on matte paper with high quality matte settings, but its almost as if my rollers are dirty, even though ive cleaned them and deep cleaned them (and everything else i could think of). The only thing left (that google has told me) is to clean it with my hands, but im quite worried about doing this. Is there a way to send a photo to you of the problem? Thank you in advance and thank you for all the helpful videos x

Ok, the paper is my first likely source - the paper is most likely not well matched to the printer. I assume it has no icc profile? Sorry, but an off-brand paper, with no colour management - this is the sorts of issues I often see... Some papers just don't work well on some printers I'm afraid.

Not sure what you mean by "art works watercolour, or acrylic" - do you mean running a painting through the printer? If so it entirely depends on the media and applied medium - no way of knowing without experimenting

@@KeithCooper hi Keith. Thanks to reply. I am a traditional artist, designer and I graduated from uni as an illustrator but I am learning digital art and I am not good yet. And I not familiar with printers. I had an Epson SC- T3160N and I tried to print vinyl stickers ( dye and kiss stickers) with it but the Cricut vinyl paper where stacked on it. Also i want to print my watercolour or acrylics art prints on it. I don’t know if I can use the SC-T3160N printer or I have to buy the canon pixma pro-200 for better performance. I live in Australia and it cost $996.55 in special. Thanks 😊
@KeithCooper
@KeithCooper 2 жыл бұрын
Watercolour/acrylic need scanning or photographing - a relatively technical area of photography and colour management to get right The T3160 is fine with suitable icc printer profiles (see my WF8690 testing for a similar 4 colour system) - the only advantage of the pro-200 is that it will be easier to get profiles for papers. Neither will print on most vinyl types - there are specialist versions but I've not tested them.

Yes - I've used 200g gsm via the top slot - earlier today to create a profile with an art paper (Canson 210) The weights can be a little misleading, it's thickness that tends to make the difference - I used the top slot for just about everything I tested...
