I have been using a Canon powershot sx60hs for bird photography since 19 May 2017 and I don't celebrate my birthday on the 16 Nov any more - I celebrate it on the 19 May. It's got to be Canon's best kept secret. Look, it's got its limitations and it's up to the thinking photographer to learn how to get around them. When I set up a website I'll be able to share some of the truly amazing photographs this camera has given me.

Came upon your video looking for how to use my Canon PowerShot sx60hs for shooting videos. I love the outdoors so want to create videos to start a KZbin channel soon. Purchased an external microphone and tested that out tonight. It worked great. Now tomorrow I will be testing settings for videos. Until now I have used the camera just for photos, but I have a Nikon D500 that I prefer using now for my wildlife photography. The Canon PowerShot will be great to do videos. I love that it has the rotating screen so I will be able to see if I'm in focus when I'm videoing myself speaking. Nice to see what you have achieved. Hoping I will get as good of results with a bit of practice. Thank you for creating this video.

Hi Sue, thank you for the kind words.. :) It's a great camera, although I feel a bit guilty now I've just got a Fuji X-T3 and feel this will probably relegate the SX60 in to retirement (but I'll keep it on standby for any events I might want to video but not risk an expensive camera)

The camera can actually shoot very good looking videos, in both bright and low light conditions. If you get poor videos, you're probably simply flipping the dial to Movie Mode and then pressing record. That's not a good idea since the camera will automatically choose a ridiculous high ISO which ruins your footage with a lot of noise and grain. You need to use Movie Manual Mode ONLY (done by pressing the func. set option during Movie Mode). Then select an ISO no higher than 400 (ideally 80 to 100 if in bright light). The aperture should be the widest possible (e.g. f/3.4). The shutter speed should be 1/60 for 30fps. Ideally, you'll want to be shooting in 30fps instead of 60fps, as 60fps introduces a lot more noise and grain than 30fps. I also recommend an external mic since the built-in one sounds a bit muffled.

Unfortunately the 4GB limit is due to the file format it uses (FAT32) .. the official numbers are.. Movie Length (Full HD & HD) Up to 4 GB or 29 min. 59 sec.¹ (L and M) Up to 4 GB or 1 hour² (Super Slow Motion Movie) Approx. 30 sec.

@bikesandcameras4236 жыл бұрын
Thanks, and have fun with the SX60, I still use mine regularly after 2 years now. I've not used 30fps much but as both frame rates appear to be 35mbps technically the 30fps should have less compression per frame so may improve on noise levels and better in situations that don't have faster motion, I just prefer the smoothness 60 fps gives. I'll keep an eye on your channel to see how you get on with it.

Thank you. I am sold and I think the 60 is a slightly better picture quality than what I've seen on the 70. Do you agree?
@bikesandcameras4233 жыл бұрын
I didn't see enough changes in the sx70 to warrant upgrading to it as I didn't need 4k30 video.. and seeing as it's higher MP 20mp on the 70 instead of 16mp on the 60 but with the same size sensor there's more chance of noise on the 70 that might degrade quality. The 70 is an improvement still but I don't think price difference is worth it. ;)

based on my budget, i've narrowed it down to sx60 and nikon coolpix L840. Which do you recommend Jason? thanks.
@bikesandcameras4238 жыл бұрын
Personally I would still go with the SX60 if I had to do it again, the main two features I don't like on the L840 is AA batteries (this might be a plus for some people though) I love the amount of shooting you can get including a ton of video from the lithium batteries on the canon, usually I only end up using one battery even though I carry three, also carrying 3x lithiums is easier to keep track of which are charged/used whilst out and about whereas AA's you'd have to make sure they keep in the sets of 4 so they don't get mixed up (my bag often ends up a mess by the end of the day so my lithiums just have numbers 1,2,3 written on them).. Viewfinder .. although the electronic viewfinder on the canon is not the greatest it still is good enough to line up the shot and having it pressed against your face makes those telephoto shots a lot more stable. I didn't look at a great deal of test videos on the Nikons when looking for mine as I had already discounted them due to the two reasons above. Other advantages.. 65x Optical Zoom (21-1365mm) instead on 38x (22.5 - 855 mm) on the Nikon 1080p60 Video instead of 1080i60 on the Nikon
@markandapps8 жыл бұрын
Thanks a lot Jason. When on 65x Optical Zoom, is the Focal Length on 1365mm and on f/6.5 aperture? And last question, have you tried the Nikon Coolpix P900?

For the price I highly recommend it still, it does have some limitations/issues such as auto focus losing it when zooming in and out (and quite a bit of zoom shake even on a sturdy tripod) but static long reach and Macro videos / photos it's great!. 2 Years on now and I'm still using it regularly as a chuck in the bag all rounder at bike meets and stuff.

@bikesandcameras4236 жыл бұрын
That's a shame, I've had pretty good results photo wise out of the SX60, sure it's not anywhere near as good as a full frame DSLR or even an APS-C camera but my main advice would be to keep the ISO as low as you can (dependant on lighting situation of course) . Sometimes I use "Auto" ISO but you can set a Max limit I have set mine to 400 in this mode. Most of the time I keep mine in AV mode and 100-200 ISO where possible, anything above 400 starts to degrade the picture quality very fast due to the tiny sensor in these. As long as your subject isn't moving too fast I would favour ISO 100 and 1/150th sec over a ISO800+ 1/2000 any day as the IS on these cope pretty well with handheld. A tripod is obviously better but sometimes you just want to "run and gun". In case you do happen to have a faulty lens or picky autofocus system on yours I would suggest a controlled test by downloading and printing a resolution chart such as www.graphics.cornell.edu/~westin/misc/ISO_12233-reschart.pdf then plop it on a tripod or flat surface and use 2 sec timer to eliminate any shake and see how it comes out, I would then be happy to do the same with mine and try and replicate your exact settings such as shutter/f-stop/ISO and then send you a comparison from mine (or even if it's just a random object like a coke can or something I can try to replicate for comparison) . One other thing if you are using a tripod for pictures I would actually suggest turning off the Image Stabiliser as I think this can sometimes make it worse when on a tripod through a kind of feedback shake (was always in the instructions and recommendation on big telephoto VR/OS lenses for Canon/Nikons).

Boss Dude don't listen to him....to much reading. Go dial the camera to movie mode Go find the manual movie mode to set your aperture and shutter Depending on the light you need, if your outside then it's best when your outside cause this won't work for indoor that great, it require a lot more light. So anyway set your F8.0 ISO 100 aperture is your choose while your filming you can adjust the light you need if it to dark or if it to bright for you and remember, it's not a DSLR. A DSLR will do most of job of indoor and outdoor

Commenting from Japan. I am trying to decide between this and the lumix fz1000. I would get the fz1000 already if it had English menu here :( I would have to order from the US but that would cost an extra 100 dollars for shipping and duties. So I am trying to convince myself that Canon powershot sx60 hs will be enough since it has English menu and half the price lol I was ready to be convinced from your video until i read your description box. I do not have a DSLR :( Back to debating if its worth the investment of buy fz1000

If you're going to do a video of a video, then shouldn't we be able to hear the ambient sounds? That would give us an idea of how the mic works, how much sound it picks up, and whatever noise the camera makes when it's zooming in and out. Instead we have to listen to horrible elevator music. Something to consider when making reviews in the future (I realize this is a couple of years old)...
