Looking at the PermaJet Heritage range of cotton rag 310gsm papers. What should you consider when using art type papers. A look at how images and papers differ and a general tutorial about printing on art papers with the 17" Canon PRO-1100.
Why paper choice is a very personal one - not all papers suit all images.

Thank you, Keith! This was another very helpful video! About the banding you mentioned towards the end, I actually just worked through this same issue on my 1100! This doesn't seem to be an isolated issue with this model. I found it was fixed by going into Canon's Media Configuration Tool, editing the profile I downloaded from the paper manufacturer, and doing a feed rate adjustment for that paper. The print head alignment also helped a little, as did enabling unidirectional printing, but ultimately it was the feed rate which was off for some reason. Now it prints perfectly though 🙂

Thanks - I do need to check this further, but I've found a 300gsm Lustre paper I've used for testing for over a decade, which has never shown any feed problems [or needed special adjustment] exhibiting this. Making a custom media type didn't help, but I didn't try unidirectional. My feeling is that this isn't something I should have to do [placed against all the other printers I've reviewed]

A lot of great information that I am pondering on for paper choices. Odd thing happened when I came back from my trip of 10 days, Canon 1100 kept starting to print but would not print. Had to reboot both the computer and start and stop the printer to get it to allow me to print. Sharing in case someone else has the problem

Solid advice, Keith. After a couple years using Red River papers on my Pro-1000, I started using some Canon papers for test prints. Some of the more basic papers, like Canon Luster, are very good. Not only for test prints but on their own. I realize it's a matter of taste, but I have yet to find a more versatile and beautiful paper than RR Palo Dura SoftGloss Rag. And the Pro-1000 ink set works very well with it. It's somewhere between a Luster and Semi-Matte finish and has a nice heft.

I notice canon usually crushes the shadows compared to Epson…in this case the p800/700 vs the prograf 1000, in my experience.

If so, then profiles or other settings are faulty. No well profiled printer at this level, with a reasonable paper, will crush shadows...

It's your editing and print settings setup then [possibly for both printers] - nothing to do with either printer I'm afraid ;-) There simply is no such significant difference between these printer models themselves. Look at use of BPC and choices of rendering intent on the Canon However, if it works for you then... carry on.

The problem is that fine art papers from the MOST RESPECTED paper manufacturers are NOT AVAILABLE in 17 inch width for the most widely used 3:2 format (since most photographers shoot 3:2 sensor cameras). Hahnemuhle, Canson, Epson and even Canon don't make papers in this size. Their papers are among the most desired, and some are INK PERMANENCE TESTED, unlike PermaJet. This is a great deficiency with this printer, since Canon doesn't offer a roll-feed model. Many photographers who buy this printer will be sorely disappointed that they can't get their favorite papers for this printer to print in 3:2 full size.
@KeithCooper
@KeithCooper 3 ай бұрын
Apart from my perhaps disputing your use of 'Many' that's true... As I have said every time you mention this - I've raised it regularly with paper suppliers - sorry but they [repeatedly] don't think it's worthwhile from a business POV. I'd perhaps also note that in most of the world "17 inch" is meaningless - no-one here sells larger sheet paper in inch sizes
@jefffenske1958
@jefffenske1958 3 ай бұрын
@@KeithCooper You know what I mean by 17" width, the width of the printer. Most photographers would like to print full size images in the format their camera captures (mostly 3:2). Since the high end paper suppliers won't provide 3:2 format paper, Canon needs to offer a roll paper option, so the high end papers can be easily used. You told how difficult and problematic it was to cut by hand sheets from roll paper in your pano video for this model. Sheets cut by the manufacturers are cut precisely, so trimming isn't required afterward, and paper wasted. Dust and debris aren't introduced. It's just ridiculous that 3:2 paper is available for the other printer widths. Potential buyers of this printer should be informed by Canon and reviewers that 3:2 size paper is not available in perhaps their preferred and most beloved papers, some of which are one-of-a-kind. There's something ethically wrong here.
@KeithCooper
@KeithCooper 3 ай бұрын
No, I simply don't agree that there is anything whatsoever 'unethical' here. It's simply business according to those I've asked about it. Whether you like it or not, most people will not think of 17" as a thing - sure, I'm an outlier since I'm old enough to happily work in metric and imperial... What response have you got when you asked US paper suppliers about this? They are not going to take notice of someone reviewing printers in the UK... However, I will indeed be noting this when I do my P900/PRO-1100/P5300 comparison later
@JakeStarrPhotography
@JakeStarrPhotography 3 ай бұрын
I've been thinking about this a lot myself, it is a shame that they don't offer an A2+ version of A3+ (which is closer to 3:2). But it is kind of only a problem if you insist on printing borderless.... As soon as you introduce a 1" border to each side then the aspect ratio becomes nearly 3:2 for any of these A sizes. An A2 sheet for example has approx dimensions of 16.5x23.4", with an aspect ratio of 1.41. The printed image with a 1" border on each side has approx dimensions of 14.5x21.4", with an aspect ratio of 1.48 - quite similar to 3:2's ratio of 1.50. Print it at 14.5x21.7 for 3:2 on A2. Red River and Breathing Color offer 17x25.5" sheets if you're in the US and like their papers. Otherwise I think the options are to cut either 25.5" lengths off a 17" roll or cut 16" lengths off a 24" roll (smaller but maybe fewer issues with curling?).

Great advice about not being in a hurry to upgrade to the latest operating system. However, I run an IT department for a US healthcare company. We are under attack by hackers on a daily basis. The latest macOS upgrades always come with security patches that protect the OS and the data. I’m shocked at how many printer companies are months behind. The beta versions of macOS 15 has been available for six months. Canon is not releasing their version of the pro 1100 printer driver until the end of October. So I have a Mac mini that’s connected directly to my printer which I have not updated. But when I did upgrade my MacBook Pro, it constantly crashed when I tried to print. There has to be a better balance of protecting the security of the MacBook at the same time that printer companies should be a bit faster in developing drivers. Security is getting more and more paramount to the protection of our machines, and there will be constant updates. Printer companies have to be faster. The day prior to the release of macOS 15 all Adobe products were ready.

Good points I now have two physical systems running 14.7 which work fairly well [I'll leave alone my creeping dislike of the way Apple is developing the look and feel of Mac OS] My other 'production' system still runs 10.15, whilst it has Virtual copies of 10.13, 10.6 and 9.1 for all my 'olde worlde', but useful stuff... ;-) Then there is the matter of getting VPNs to work... :-)
