NOTE THESE SPECS COULD BE WRONG BUT I'M INCLINED TO BELIEVE THEM!!
Please buy your gear at SDP.io/Adorama to support us!
Via Petapixel (petapixel.com), Tony Northrup brings you the leaked specs of the Canon R1, including 30 megapixel stacked sensor with a flash sync speed of 1/1250. It supports 120 FPS, just like the Sony a9 III, but will also do a burst of 240 FPS.
Tony compares the new R1 specs to the current Canon R3, the Sony a9 III (with its global shutter), the Sony a1, and the Nikon Z9... and ultimately the Canon R1 brings some new capabilities that beat both Sony & Nikon!

Yes, except for the extremely rare situations. A baseball player is at 599 home runs, for example, and having the image of the 600th home run ball on the bat. But for other sports, like tennis, the ball is in contact with the racket long enough for 1/30 to get the job done.

I never ran into a flash sync speed being 1/60th for the Z9 (in the real world) unless the timing of the flash is out of sync with a trigger. You can adjust the latency of the trigger so it can sync at 1/250th. It's similar to the affect of a the audio latency is off from the video. With flicker you can't stop led cycles especially if they are focused light like screens and projectors and led readouts.

The camera was not imported from a different more advanced planet, but for an Earth-built camera that needs to have a competitive price and generate enough earnings to pay for the R&D and the development of the next camera in the next 3 to 4 years, it looks fantastic. On paper is competitive or better than the equivalent cameras.

I could buy this camera, and I don't even want it because I don't need 240fps. I already had a r3 and 30fps was plenty. I'd rather have improvements like what you mentioned. We're basically plateauing in tech right now to the point of "yeah these are cool spec bumps, but nobody actually needs this speed" like I don't even think bird photographers or sports photographers need 120 or 240fps lol.

About ending the fps war: 120fps definitely has its uses, both in some sports and for shooting birds in flight. I don't do sports, but for BiF I'd certainly give up resolution for the 120fps, if I could afford an A9 III as my 2nd camera (I'm just a hobbyist). Also for BiF more than sports, it matters if you can shoot 120fps raw, or just jpeg. Canon also needs to fix their pre-release feature. The way they implemented it so far, makes it about as useless as the burst mode. You need to be able to fine-tune the time captured before pressing the shutter and more importantly, you need to be able to keep shooting if you want to follow the subject. OM and Sony got it right. Having to deal with that special file with all the pre-release shots in it, instead of just getting normal raws also doesn't help.

I think the biggest takeaway from this sensor is going to be able to use contrast lines that not only go vertically, but also Horizontally and diagonally. That's going to be a game changer by itself. HDR is neither here or there. The R3 already has some incredible HDR so it'll have to be ARRI levels of DR in order to be impressive. Being able to expose a flame, AND the surrounding area... that would be impressive.

NOTE: Nikon Z9/Z8 flash sync is 1/200 unless they improved that with a firmware update that I don't recall. Flash synch doesn't matter to me as a photojournalist, I shoot all available light, so low-light sensor capabilities are more important, as well as the dynamic range. I don't use flash for sports; not a fan of how it looks. I prefer a more natural look. UPDATE: I guess that was a firmware 3.00 improvement.

Speaking of camera specs for high-end cameras, one thing I would like to start seeing in cameras is non-volatile internal memory, maybe 32GB or 64GB. Partially so that they could increase buffer clearing times for long bursts (I mean 64GB isn't much with some of these cameras that can shoot 30 fps with RAW files being 50-60MB each). But I feel that internal memory that can be used like permanent storage (like a memory card) would be a nice touch. Maybe you can enable it for over-run (if you run out of card space and you only have one card), or to act as a second buffer so that you can kep shooting while the camera keeps writing files, thus allowing the camera to keep writing whiel you keep shooting and have plenty of space. This is something I think that could be added really to all future cameras and they can charge a bit extra for it (or maybe make it a paid mod for example; you send the camera back and they solder a memory chip onto it for say $200 more).

I moved to the R5 from the 5DIV specifically because 1, the autofocus is much better and 2, the added pixels are wonderful because it seems that birds never want to be close enough to fill the frame, even at 600mm. So cropping is much better with the R5. As far as prints go, all things being equal, there will be little difference. I used to print my stuff at home and sell them. The largest I printed were a couple of 17X35 (odd size requested by the customer using an Epson P800) but most of my prints were 16X24 and the two camera results in print form were pretty much indistinguishable.

I like your comparisons. Good video. I don't know why with these cameras offered today that if you need a high frame rate. Why don't you just shoot video. Granted, there should be one or two cameras in the whole industry that has extremely high frame rates for such things scientists would need. But for the rest of us if sixty frames per second in video won't be enough, there may be something wrong with your photography. I scrub through video frames all the time for the perfect still shot. Even at family reunions I shoot video for the family photo and then pull the best frame. I do the same for humming birds. It adds too much to the cost of the camera to have these high frame rates. Just to put the facts into the real world, if a car was traveling sixty miles per hour the distance traveled in one sixtieth is just over a quarter inch. It's bad enough the gouge camera companies are adding. Call it the gouge tax. If they want to sell more cameras, reduce the price to a fair profit and don't expect to recoup development costs after selling five cameras. I need a fully articulating screen for photos because often I have my camera above my head and shoot with a remote. If too many people squawk offer the camera both ways with and without an articulating screen. I would agree with security on a camera. But for GPS, let the camera grab it from your phone or other device. The number of people who actually care about location are a weak minority, so drop a bone and let the camera talk to your phone for extra data. GPS may be the most expensive component on the camera, after liability insurance for the camera company. Again, good video. Be safe.

That flash sync was my exact hope was 1/1000, especially combined with a low base ISO. 1/400 is still too slow for any action portraits forcing HSS. 1/2000 would be ideal but 1/1000 legitimately freezes most important parts of an action shot. I would much rather have that than the trade offs of global shutter. But I’m Sony so will be hoping the A1 II has a more well rounded upgrade than the A9 iii.

When the Canon 5D MK2 came out it was considered revolutionary. As a working professional I considered this camera a game changer, as did most of my peers. Fast forward to now, the specs these cameras have just blow my mind. AI assisted autofocus??! I have never had the need to use 30fps, let along 120. If you find these specs are not good enough, then you need to start questioning the user, not the tool.
@ProfessorStone

That camera was a game changer because it leap-frogged MP... 12 to 20. The 1 series kept it close with around 18mp so at least they were similar. Now the 5 series is still the high MP, but the 1 series is so far behind it's embarrassing. I'm an art photographer and let me tell you, I DO need the high MP. I'm printing 30" x 40" or larger prints and 30mp shows vs 60 or 100 or even 45. If you crop even a little bit you're loosing a HUGE amount of detail as well. On top of that the higher ISO kills sharpness so the higher MP can make up for that. They used to have a 1 and a 1s where the s was a higher MP. They need to bring that back, I want the vertical grip, higher weather sealing and durability of the 1 series, but with high MP for my printing. I'm so disappointed in these specs... total bummer. I'm already switching, the other camera manufactures figured it out 2+ years ago with better specs, embarrassing for Canon.

The R6II has also “raw burst mode / pre-shooting” but only half a second and no stacked sensor, meaning it is unusable because if rolling shutter. The R3 deliberately gets no firmware upgrade adding that to the R3, Canon’s only camera yet having a stacked sensor and for that the only model it would make sense. You should by an R1. - The best system for sport and action is still the Olympus OM-1. It has a brilliant stacked BSI sensor with 20.8 megapixel (that’s an almost identical pixel pitch like on the a1), a jaw dropping good AF system, excellent lenses. The first iteration of the OM-1 comes with ProCaptureSH2 mode, 50 frames per second raw buffered, maintaining all AF and tracking functionality, 70 frames max. in buffer, that makes whopping 1.4 secs pre buffered and for that outperforms all competitors. It’s unfortunately all gear reviewing photography channels like this here (also all similar others like Jared’s etc.) dooming MFT with that for sports and action totally irrelevant full frame hype. The OM-1 is without any doubt the best system I ever had for wildlife, sports and action (I had also the ED 150-400 F4.5 TCx1.25) photography and I regret I ditched it, being tempted by the R3. Hoping Canon comes soon with a firmware upgraded adding something like a ProCaptureSH2 to the R3. What a disappointment. The OM-1 (new under 2k) and OM-1 Mk2 is available, the system is fool proof, I never had a crash (the R3 crashes permanently when GPS is on), totally weather sealed, offers in body features like internal ND filter up to 6 stops, and so much more. It’s small and you carry only ⅓ of the weight. And it is available and not only a development announcement.

These are more or less in line with what I figured they would be. 30MP is fine for most applications, even wildlife. After all, I've shot wildlife on my R7 and it's 32.5MP. I can see getting this if you're a wedding photographer. The flash sync speed and better dynamic range are always a plus, and plenty of weddings have been shot on the 30MP 5D Mark IV. @@sn4rl277 it's a fine camera, but it's decade old specs. People that talk about "megapixel sweet spots" are the reason why Canon doesn't bother trying to match or give something similar to the Z9 and A1. Literally nobody was asking for 120 or 240fps. People just wanted a Z9 or A1 copy from Canon. It's so strange to me seeing these comments from people who are like "well the 1 line was always about speed and low megapixels" and you know what also was speed and low megapixels? The Sony A9 which was 24mp and the Nikon D6 which was 20mp. The Sony A1 replaced the Z9 and proved it was possible to have resolution and speed, and Nikon buys their sensors from Sony so they also have resolution and speed. Canon's marketing has also contradicted themselves too saying that "professionals don't want more resolution" meanwhile every working professional and wildlife photographer is jumping systems or complaining to Canon that they have to use a R5 for it, but want the R3 speed. People just wanted a 50mp 30-40 fps flagship from Canon and they were gonna be happy. The workflow for 120-240fps is going to be disastrous lol. It doesnt' even make sense. Canon said that they wanted the lower megapixels so they could publish photos quickly... but then are going to give them even more photos than is already a pain to go through. Like it doesn't even make sense from a workflow perspective. Like I was saying originally though like 20mp was fine a decade ago but seeing people defend and say "you can get good photos on 20mp because national geographic was using 1dx's to take the photos" is true, but also why purposely handicap your creativity by old specs? It doesn't make sense. You can have speed and resolution now why handicap yourself with bad specs.
