Great stuff here, man! I've got the R5 and R6 Mk II, and after a lot of research, I'm planning to add the R5 Mk II to my gear back in the near future. While I would love to have the R1, it's total overkill for my use, and I am certainly not the intended demographic anyway. However, the improved AF, and especially the pre-capture feature in the R5 Mk II are really good incentives to buy that body! I can definitely relate to the comments about the battery life. I use the battery grip with all my camera, and will do the same here. I also ALWAYS buy an extra set of batteries with each camera, so I'll be cycling between one pair in the battery grip and one pair in the charger.

Awesome. You're going to love it. The autofocus alone is worth the upgrade in my opinion. I'm currently up to 5 batteries for it. I can get through a 12 hour wedding shooting about 5000 images on 4 batteries and I don't have any of the power saving features turned on. So while it's definitely worse than the R5 and R6 it's not drastically different.

@@jaylphoto A 12-HOUR WEDDING??? I never thought about how photographers have to do much more than just take pictures at the reception. My word, that's a hell of a long day. I did my years playing in wedding bands, and our normal length for a reception was 4 hours. Some days we had doubles, one gig at 1 or 2 and another at 7. Those were tough ones, because of all the schlepping of equipment. Load in for the first gig, set up, sound check, play the reception, break down the gear, load out, drive to the next venue and repeat.

I think the number 1 thing you can attribute the change in battery life to is the new Digic Accelerator chip. I believe that one component is consuming the lion's share of the extra power requirements. Not sure if the brighter and EVF couple with the eye control AF has an impact, but that is very possible as well.
@jonowebster3 ай бұрын
I'm not convinced as I switched from R6 to R6ii and noticed exactly the same reduced battery time. Maybe it's simply due to higher max FPS and or smoother EVF. I'm not complaining about the battery life, it's actually still great, just appears slightly less.
@davidlennon123 ай бұрын
Auto focus/eye detection is amazing for BIF. Only issues I have is battery life compare to my 90D plus the R5MK2 "bricked' removing and reinstalling the battery reset it but have seen random setting change. Have sent it back to supplier who woll replace .
@edwardhammond5582Ай бұрын
Useful - thanks. Everyone is talking about the battery life - I'd be crazy not to listen carefully. But I'm more landscape and architecture and was looking for the stabilization and focus to reduce my tripod dependency. I'd be migrating from 5D IV. Maybe I can disable stuff I won't need so much and get better battery life, or is that defeating the purpose of the upgrade? Thoughts?
@jaylphoto27 күн бұрын
I had a 5d IV and it's a great camera. For that work I think it's definitely worth the upgrade if you're looking to ditch the tripod because the ibis is a very nice upgrade over a dslr. Plus the jump in megapixels will allow you much more flexibility in post. You could always not use the back display and just use the view finder and have the screen time off on the shortest option. There's a bunch of things you can do to extend the battery but there's a lot more going on in the camera compared to the 5d IV and it will all suck up batteries. I still think this camera is well worth the upgrade if you have the money for it. Just plan to have a few extra batteries. I can currently get through a 12 hour wedding and 5000-6000 images on 4 batteries and that's without any battery saver options turned on.

Agreed. Batteries don't last anywhere near as long as the R5, I'm afraid. But worth it for the extra functionality. It just means extra batteries or a charger close by.
@williamgabriel60412 ай бұрын
The batteries were not designed to last longer. They’re the exact same number of Wh as the old ones. They allow for a higher power draw so that the advanced features can be used. If the power use is higher but the capacity is the same, that necessarily means the battery life will be shorter.

The new battery does NOT last longer, per design it has the exact same capacity as the previous one. But it can supply a higher maximum current, which is required for some video functions and fast burst shooting on the R5II.
@CAMphotography_3 ай бұрын
He literally said in his experience the new battery does not last longer.
@guydesrouilleres3 ай бұрын
@@CAMphotography_What he meant to say was that the new battery was never supposed to last longer than the previous model. All it does is output more power during use to make use of some of the new functionalities. So the battery has the same capacity as the previous one, it can just output more maximum power at a time. Hopefully that clears some things up on that

So the newer battery is to compensate for the R5ii higher draw. But if you did use the newer battery in an older camera you will see longer battery life. The R5C for example has shown a 40-100% increase in record time with the new battery .
@daemon11433 ай бұрын
I don't think the new battery was supposed to last longer, it wasn't a higher mAh battery. It was supposed to be able to provide more power, it's a higher current battery, which implies that it won't last as long if doing high power draw tasks. Which tasks draw higher power are those functions that are disabled if you stick the old battery in it.
@michaellekas273 ай бұрын
Excellent video Jay....I agree with your observations on the r5 mk2. Excellent AF but the battery life as you mention is less than the r5 mk1. It does not last as long and I dont understand why that is.
@jaylphoto3 ай бұрын
I know the new battery is the same capacity as the old one but it has a higher output to support different shooting modes. I thought I heard people say the R5 2 was supposed to be more efficient. Guess that wasn't true.

The auto subject detect is a good option, but it can add to battery drain. It runs all those neural networks of people, animals, cars detection one after another instead of just one or none. I'm curious how much drain it adds. I wold like to have it on auto too. Other than that - the camera is much more power-hungry. The autofocus works more frequently, processes more areas, etc, the viewfinder is brighter, scans the eye, there is additional AI processor, etc. I'm not surprised the buttery holds less time.

Not sure where you're getting it from but if it's a private sale, I'd say it's not a great deal. You can get that camera body and those lenses from Canon directly for 3300. And you'll get a warranty with it from canon Check out CanonPriceWatch.com I don't have experience with the R3 but I find it hard to recommend over the R5 mkii especially because a used R3 is almost the same price as the r5ii new. For social media content the r6ii is a great camera. It's also good enough for everything you mentioned. Plus buying one refurbished will allow you to invest in glass. I don't find the size of a camera really impresses my clients much these days. Honestly I use the DJI osmo pocket 3 for BTS and I get more comments on how small that camera is than how big my main bodies are. For what you're looking to do I think the r6ii is a great option but I think you can find it cheaper. As far as an r6iii the latest rumors are saying q1 2025 but that's just rumors and that can always change.

I have r6 m2 and r5 m2. Low light performance with r6 is muck better. And you have to avoid using uv filters with it. Resolution drastically drops with long focus lenses. 100-500 for long end is literally blurred with r5 m2. But without uv it’s sharp. More focus distance you use more resolution drop you will have. It’s like to observe with binoculars through window.

I sent mine back. I could just as easily say that is "all you need to know", too. Nothing you showed us here needs any advanced AF capabilities. And, no, you don't have to pixel peep to appreciate dynamic range. (I get so sick of people using that term to explain away everything about every camera.) Being able to bring detail out of shadows can be the difference between a print that sells, or one that hangs on the wall. For weddings? You don't have that problem. My clients make their buying decisions AFTER I print the shots. A funny thing happens when you enlarge a shot big enough to hang over the entire mantle of a fireplace (for instance). The pixels get peeked at, because of the size of the print.
