Your perspective is very valuable to me. I’m considering the R6. I’m not a full-time pro, so the R5 seems way too expensive for me. And, as a graphic designer, I’ll second your comment on MPs. When designing for bus wraps, billboards and the like you don’t usually need 40MP images, because the viewing distance is much, much greater than a framed photo or album. Even 20MP works on a 30ppi billboard printout. It seems like many photographers make the mistake of thinking huge, outdoor graphics are printed at 300ppi. They can be, but usually that’s much higher than necessary for beautiful, sharp-looking images at really big sizes and long viewing distances. Thanks for your insights.

Great video! I agree with all your points and got the R6 instead of the R5 as well (for all the same reasons). I also made the same mistake at a wedding with the low shutter speed, like you not realizing I went down so low and had a couple blurryish images. I found a setting in the "orange" menu on page 2, to set the range on the shutter speed so I won't accidentally go down that far again. For me I never need a shutter lower than 250 so it works. Thanks again! Love your videos!

Katelyn, you are nice, funny, direct, no nonsense and extremely informative. You hit the points that people have the most questions about. You are not constantly trying to sell people unnecessary equipment. I had a feeling that you were going to buy at least one RF lens. Your thought process for not replacing all of your lenses is sound. Keep the formula that you have you are doing an outstanding job.

@@KatelynJames It really should be labeled differently - but the standard face detect one shot is not tracking in between shots. That's what is confusing people. The real mode you want to be on is face detect with servo enabled - where you set the initial track point - and it continuously tracks. It's misleading to have face detect be tracking. I've shot multiple weddings and tons of other shoots with dual r6. When you get the settings this way you won't look back.

Just got mine yesterday here in the UK ! You cannot find one anywhere, online or in the shops ! I had decided to wait until after christmas to get my R6, I popped int o a local camera shop where I work yesterday, to find the RF 35mm 1.8 lens , to buy it for the R6 when I found one. The shop assistant went into the back of the shop to get the box for the lens, and came out and told me he had some good news ! Two had just arrived that morning ( with the 24- 105 mm lens ) . They had over 20 pre orders for the R6, but said if I wanted one I could have it! I was buying the 35mm lens for £430, but ended up paying £2850 for the whole camera with the lens ! It was dark when I got home, I was blown away by the EVF, but was suprised when I put my L series 70 - 200mm on the camera, it would not take pictures with it , I am going to try it again today , in full daylight.

Low shutter sound... Great call, I've got caught out the same as you did. I was second shooter, helping a friend out and and he said, "You're shutter is so quiet, it's insane". Only when checking back on a couple of shots during a break did I notice that it's a fraction OOF. I searched and searched KZbin for information about whether I should get the r5 or r6 mark ii, and I couldn’t find real world examples of the pros and cons. This video is exactly what I was looking for, but was unable to find. I bought the mark ii which is a bit different than the r6, but I agree with everything you have included in your video. I think the eye tracking is a bit better in the mark ii, but I haven’t used it very much yet. Supposed to be about the same as the r3 which is my main camera and had awesome AF eye detection. I wonder if rf lenses work better for eye tracking speed. I read that they do, but I jumped ship from Nikon, so I had to buy the rf lenses. Anyway thanks for making the video I really wanted. All of your r6 videos, actually.

I absolutely LOVED that you picked up a 28-70 f/2! It's one of my dream lenses too! I personally am prepping to get an 85 1.2 DS once my RF 70-200 2.8 is paid off, and I can't wait to have in my hands that little bit extra the defocus smoothing gives. As someone mostly interested in studio work, it's hard for me to get excited about shooting outdoors. Hoping that'll be that nugget of inspiration I need right now, quite like you said at the end shooting with the R6 has been for you! But I seriously adore how pragmatic you're being with these decisions. I personally, on the other end, look forward to getting the R5s because 41-45MP isn't ENOUGH to get me excited. But it really is a total drag the idea of spending wild amounts of money just on MEMORY CARDS. With you on THAT for sure. I also love your honesty about eye AF. People on KZbin really don't understand the pressure true working professionals are put under to get that shot. And as great as it is, there ARE limitations.

I appreciate that for working professionals, this is a huge boon. For some hobbyists, the process is often as important as the result. Appreciated Tyler giving us an update on the video side of things. Very helpful. Also important to know about the eye-focus concerns. Totally agree about the importance of an EVF. I'm writing this for anyone watching your (great) video. You may know this by now, but if you have a white box with arrows around the eye/face while using eye/face tracking, there is a setting that makes for a much faster method. Look in the AF menus for "Initial AF point" and select the top choice. Another factor is Then you get a box without arrows that turns blue around the eye/face when it's locked and with a completely different operation. I generally leave the focus point somewhere mid frame where it's easy to see. Aim it at the eye/face you want, half press and hold the shutter to recompose at will while the camera keeps the blue box on the eye/face you started on. Far too many times I had a poor composition on my 5D on someone because I was concentrating on keeping that focus point on my target. I still do some but now it's totally my fault where I had at least a weak excuse before. I tried to use that white box with arrows on my R5 and it was tough with moving targets. But I didn't try long because it was so irritating and slow to move to other targets. With the other setup, to change targets, just let off the shutter, aim the focus point at your new target and half press the shutter release again. In Roberto Valenzuela's video at 9:22, it shows the irritating white box with arrows:kzbin.info/www/bejne/i6iwfmd8aM-thLs Settings involved for my favorite method: AF Operation> SERVO AF, and AF Method>Face+box, then be sure eye detection is enabled. I've been using an R5 but I have an R6 on it's way to replace the 5D MKIII I use for my 2nd camera at weddings. The focus system is one of the top two reasons I'm doing that. Instant feedback on exposure changes in the viewfinder is the other big reason. These cameras are so fast to use. Tell Tyler he's doing an great job too.

I was considering getting an R6 as a second body but after 2 months with the R5 I will go with a second R5 instead - the detail is incredible, and the colours and files are really nice to work with. It is really nice to be able to crop half of the image away and still have a 22.5 megapixel image. The CFExpress Cards are incredibly fast and the time you notice it is burst shooting 45 megapixel photos at 20 frames a second and still not hitting a buffer - taking the photos off the camera is nice too, transferring off at around 1GB per second. I am shooting with eye tracking, but I have the SET button in a custom mode set to pull the focus to the centre of the frame - without the SET button I wouldn’t use the eye AF though, I am using the 28-70 f2 as well, really love it.

Just a tip for you Katelyn, I am mostly a sports photographer, however when I do my off track people shots I use "Eye detection auto focus" You will need to assign a separate button for this. This is not eye tracking, it just places a green box on the eye in an instant. If you move your camera the box will move too, in which case just press the button again. I use back button focus as my usual focus button and the next button for eye detection auto focus. It works for me.

Are you using this setting for a single person, multiple people, or both? Can you explain how eye detection focus is different from eye tracking? I can relate to your focusing needs because I'm a former photojournalist & did tons of sports.. My cameras are always set on high speed shutter, follow focus & back button no matter what I'm shooting--I shoot family documentary now & there's always movement. I want to continue like this with the added benefits of sharp eyes & faces but I can't figure out how best to do this. Apparently, this requires two separate buttons & can't be done in just one setting? I've messed with my focus settings so much that now I don't know which way is up!!
@nismo09nz
@nismo09nz 4 жыл бұрын
@@sherrypeters278 For a single person it focuses on the closest or clearest eye. Multiple people in one shot mode it focuses on the closest eye of the closest person or eye that stands out most, you can your move your camera aim towards a particular person and it will change from one to the other. In AI Servo place your initial focus point over the person you want to focus on then when you push focus button it will face track or eye track that person. Eye detection focus (EDF) works in one shot mode, by focusing on the eye, but it doesn't track it, so you compose, focus and shoot. You need to set up a custom button for this. If the person moves or you reposition your camera you have to push the eye detection focus button again. (see below for EDF in AI Servo) Eye tracking works in one shot (auto detect and track) and ai servo (press focus button to detect and track) by selecting "tracking" auto focus method and enabling "eye detection". Once focused on the eye it will track it. (You need to set subject to detect to people ..or animal). This can be done via a menu or with the R6 default button settings). Now you can combine both methods. Select AI Servo. Set the focus method to "tracking" but DON"T enable "eye detection" Now press focus and your camera will track the head only. Now if you press the button you customized to "eye detection focus" it will focus on the eye as I said before, but now it will track (even with eye tracking disabled) .... so now you have the best of both worlds... press focus, track heads...press EDF button, track eyes. I use back button focus (AF-ON) and depth of field button for eye detection focus. Sound confusing...it's not :) A third focus point option is to set an area of your screen up (top right) to respond to your thumb movement (see in menus). You can shoot using the viewfinder with your finger on the shutter button and your thumb moving the focus point to where you want it. (Focus and recompose is out now) They all have their place in different situations. Experiment lots, try the different modes in different situations and you will find which is best for yourself. It's an amazing camera .... very customizable

I really appreciate your help, thank you! So in other words, this two-button set up is how you switch from eye detection to eye tracking. I assume tracking, and not eye detection, would be good with a wider lens & multiple people at a distance, moving around as well as toward me, for example. I wouldn't be as worried about the eyes, I'd just want sharp faces. Out of curiosity, what mode do you use when shooting sports? What do you do when shooting a landscape with no people--touch focus? What does the camera do in tracking mode when there are no people? I'm so used to focusing & recomposing and I don't want to stop and use the touchscreen. Is there a way to use both simultaneously, without needing to change modes in the menu? Are touchscreen and other AF modes mutually exclusive? I've got my settings screwed up that now my touchscreen is disabled anyway! And I'm set on tracking without eye detection. And finally, I've got this white box at the bottom of my screen. When I push back button focus it turns into a grid of little blue boxes that move around as I move the camera. No idea how this happened, given the settings I'm at. I know this is a great camera but it's so cumbersome right now.....

Thanks for the tips! Particularly - don't rely on that slow shutter sound to cue you that your ISO is off. Good catch! I think the eye-detect *may* take a tad to lock-in vs with single-point the camera isn't even needing to "think" before trying to focus. I agree that it's something to experiment with. Hi Katelyn. Thank you for a very informative video. Concerning your last point regarding slow shutter speed, my EOS R allows me to sync my shutter speed to the lens focal length and this works automatically for zooms. Menu 1 chapter 3 there is an ISO speed setting with a 'Min.shutter spd' option. At one time I thought this just allowed you to set a minimum speed for your camera/lens, but if you go into this option you can set it to Manual (which will set a single minimum speed) or Auto which is clever and allows you to pick a speed that changes with the focal length of your lens and this actually changes as you zoom in and out!! This also allows you to modify what the camera would normally allow as a minimum by moving a point along a scale, really cool. Try it and see if it works for you. Best ...Ed

Thank you for reaffirming a lot of the reasons I have been leaning towards picking up an R6 instead of the R5. I am not really a video shooter, so the R6 already has more than enough video capability for anything I would be doing. I can see the occasional situation where I would love to have those 45mp when shooting stills, but 99% of the time 20mp is going to be more than enough. Also, there definitely is something special about the RF lenses. Adapted lenses work really well on canon R cameras, but the RF glass just seems to communicate telepathically, and the sharpness and clarity is just unlike anything else out there.

I use the viewfinder as well. Holding the camera out to use the LCD screen with a heavy lens doesn’t work for me, my hands shake too much so whatever focus point I choose ends up getting shifted cause I can’t hold the camera steady when it’s extended like that.

To my mind anyone that thinks that the viewfinder is a thing of the past and hold their camera out probably has not used a full-size camera body with fast glass, at least not for a sustained period, you also lose stability and the center of gravity is off, phones are for holding out, cameras are for peering through! I'll get my coat! Anyway, interesting video and reasoning for getting the R6, I think I prefer the R6 control dial over the mode dial and screen, but I cannot get either here yet, anyway!

sidenote: canon files are actually pretty small. the r6 reeeeeally takes the cake here in file sizes! 20 mb per normal shot and 12-13 mb for craw! that's just crazy! and the r5 isn't so bad with 45 mb per raw image and 23-25 mb per raw file. i don't feel like this should've been an issue for the decision to go r5 or r6. i mean if you spend 1400$ extra over the r6, the little bit extra on CFE and a regular SD card will not exactly give you a huge backlash financially. its just a little extra sure. i personally bought the r6 because well, 1400$ cheaper and it satisfies most of my needs and more than what i need actually it might be a little over kill for what i do but i do love those features and i know i will have days and cases which these features will come in handy like the 12-20 fps modes

Thanks for the R6 videos there are not enough real world experience videos on it since the R5 seems to get the attention of most. I see the 28-70mm f/2 being a perfect fit for you since a review that I read described it as a bag full of primes. Same girl, same. Real good video, Katelyn! There is one good reason that no one has mentioned about using the rear screen to compose that is a negative. If the photographer wears glasses for close up viewing, they'd have to stop and put on their glasses to see the screen...whereas... by looking through the camera eyepiece they would see a sharp image because the diopter would be adjusted for the photographers eyes.

In this video I was interested to hear your comment that you received feedback that shooting with the camera to your eye is passe and that one should use the LCD screen. I will admit now that I AM old school. I've been shooting for almost 40 years when the viewfinder was all you had and there was no IS. I think this school of thought has developed from a generation of cell phone users and for videographers who have got used to that method. However, I am going to note a point of physics. It requires three points of support to hold something steady (that's why tripods are tripods after all). Holding a camera with two points of support, and those cantilevered from your body is both inherently more unstable and fatiguing, especially if one is using heavy lenses. It may be less of an issue for those shooting with small focal length lenses, but for anything telephoto I would always shoot with the camera to my eye to get that third level of support. In my classes I get students to take a broom by the bristle end and, using the two hand extended technique, try to hold the top of the handle steady - they find it extremely hard and tiring. That simple model equates to the light path of a camera with a tele lens, held two-handed. So I ask them to do what they need to do to get the handle steady and to reduce their fatigue. They hold the camera like a rifle: that is to say one hand on the pole and the bristle to their shoulder - that is the same principle as shooting with the lens to one's eye. So, in conclusion, I think that there is a place for both methods. For shallow FL and video then the two-handed method may be OK, but for tele work I think the physics and fatigue arguments hold true to support shooting from the (E)VF

I remember watching this last year thinking, she trippin', but since then, I actually bought an R5 and sold it to buy the R6, I have to say, you were right, haha. R5 is a great camera, but CF cards are so expensive, something like 3x as much as even UHS-II cards, never mind UHS-I, plus card readers are also really expensive. Also, at 45 megapixels, you're filling up cards quickly, and you can just be shooting casual pictures of cats and end up with 20 gigs of photos. When you're zooming into pictures, R5 pictures look amazing and you'll totally notice the lack of resolution when you drop down to 20 megapixels, but when you finish your edits and export the photos, you honestly couldn't ever tell, and I think you can totally crop in up to like 200% on R6 pictures and still get sufficient resolution. The two things I miss about the R5 is having a 4K mode that never overheats and having custom modes for video, but honestly, I can get by without those things because heck, I can save up for a second R6 with the money left over, and 1080P is fine, too. Also, for video, they keep improving the R6, with better heat management and now recording to both card slots and things like that.

You're ether one of the VERY few actual pro photographers on KZbin, or it's just the others have no idea how to express their pro workflow as good as you do. Their perspective is just not what I'm looking for when choosing cameras and camera gear. If I feel that a camera is not a extension of my body while shooting, then I don't care how many MPs or focus points it has, or how good the screen is, it won't fill your view like a viewfinder.
