Great video as usual. A couple things that I never considered that you talked about. 1- set up C3 and saving once you see what your conditions are for each shoot. That should have been obvious but I overlooked it. 2- Auto update settings. I had an interesting phenomenon with this setup on my Canon R5. I set it up exactly like your set up in the video and my camera would fail to turn on about 60% of the time unless I took the batteries out and put them back in and I haven't had a single freeze up since the 1.5.2 update. I cleared the custom settings and I was back to normal. turned it on and off 50 times with no problem. I put the settings back and got the same result so I called Canon USA and reported that. Not sure which of those settings are triggering that in my camera But I suspect it's the auto update enabled because that's really the biggest change from my previous settings.

The way Canon has separated video and photo in the R5c doesn't work for me, so I don't think I will get one. Also no eye tracking in video mode for birds is pretty painful. R5 has the best ergonomics (button design & usability) and menu for video by a mile. Sony is good, but their image stabilisation really lets them down for handheld video. Nikon Z9 was very good for video and has internal Pro Res recording, which is great

Excellent and it's helped me out a lot but something worth mentioning up front is the assigned function of every button because if someone were shooting only photos the buttons could have gotten changed unknowingly relative to video. In my case the mode button wasn't mode - duh. There also is a little confusion regarding getting the menu to display video settings which disappears once the M-fn button has been assigned to switch between photo and video as you suggest. Otherwise the Mode button will result in text in the lower section saying: INFO photo video which allows the switch via the INFO button. I decided to program the DOF button as MODE for video and found that the programming of the button has to be saved for all 4 modes M, C1, C2, C3 - not sure if this applies to other buttons at this time.

Hi Jan, just upgraded from the 5DmkIV. I do marine work and just wondering about c-log and how difficult it would be using premiere to edit for this. I have to do a lot of work balancing colour and highlights/shadows/blacks anyway. Will it be more difficult than this?

It’s a little more involved but not a lot and you can get LuTs too

OK, One more: I got through your video. Very helpful, especially for someone (like me) with little video knowledge. Just past half-way through your video, it sounds like you try to talk us out of using Canon Log settings (flat look to video and more processing). However, towards the end when you describe setting up the Custom Shooting Modes 1-3 for video, you chose Canon Log 3. Do you personally prefer to use that format despite the drawbacks that you point out? If that's the case, I would be fine without the Canon Log setting, but just wanted to double check. Thanks again for all the great info and taking the time to respond to questions.

Yes, I usually shoot in Log, because I will edit my videos anyways. What you chose there is up to you.

@@jan_wegener Was going to ask the same question - thanks Milo. At this time and for me I think it would be advantageous to have an external recorder, for example, Ninja V, if I am using C Log which is the point I think you make in the video. I am not confident about getting good exposure when I am shooting in C Log - it is all so dull-looking. I don't have an external recorder and have used the neutral picture style with good results. Do you use an external recorder Jan in any of your shoots and if so which one? Thanks for a great video. Outstanding content!

@@brianwillis202 I am using Ninja V to shoot at home and sometimes outside. Works great. You will need to use the histogram to get exposure

Hi Jan, I have noted that the M-Fn button photo to video is not available on R5 MK II. Do you have an option for that?
@jan_wegener9 күн бұрын
No. You have to use the photo/ video switch on lhs unfortunately

Thanks Jan great tips. I have similar set up for my vlogging with the R5 allowing me to go from stills to either 4K 25fps or 4K 100 fps just with one click. There are some additional things in your video I will be sure to check out. Cheers Keith

Jan than you for your wonderful videos I wondered if it would be possible to get you to write down each step. The customising of button is the one I cannot get. I get the first one but the focus ing steps are just a bit fast for me and when I pause your video a lot to make sure I have these set up correctly I just cannot make out the star alignment and the task you have given it. Hope this does not sound like rubbish. I love your presentation no bullshit no wasting time just straight into process. If you have a print or e-book I would be quite happy to pay Thank you Sue Shepherd New Zealand.
