I admire the work done in the making of this and other videos you do. The Sennheiser MKH8060 has a more relaxing sound to listen to, the difference makes it worth to bring it.

Thank you for watching and commenting, Rudy! The forecast for the race tomorrow shows 10-15 mph winds. The Sennheiser MKH 8060 has a better wind muff and I decided that I will bring my larger tripod with the arm for the Sennheiser MKH-8060. To make the rig lighter I will take the video head off and use a leveling tripod had. Cheers!

Thank you for reviewing the MD-E1D, it’s the only video I can find on it. Any chance you could give us the raw unedited audio. I find the audio from the canon to sound really metallic and robotic. I want to see if it’s the voice isolation audio processing that did that or if it actually sounds like that. Thanks.

Amazing video and very comprehensive!! Straight to the point which I always like. I own 3 R5c which I use for weddings . Two of them I’m using the new Tascam interface for R5c and for the third one I’m debating if I should get this new Canon mic or not

Thank you for watching and commenting. For less critical b-roll shots and for ad-hoc closeup interviews Canon DM E1D works well, but for key speeches at a distance second sound system would still be better. Cheers!

I’m curious you have R5c volume level at 25? You don’t get any hiss or anything in a studio setting? Im having difficult time balancing DJI wireless Lav with R5c; seems like my current level of 12 is too low. Perhaps I’ll bump up to 25 and scale back the DJI receiver and transmitter level to see if I can find a better balance that way. I’d love any input on recording settings on R5C as there isn’t much currently out there.

Thank you for watching. The old rule was to keep the camera pre-amp level at minimum because camera pre-amps were inferior to the pre-amps in wireless systems. The pre-amps in R5/R5C are much improved and you can use their pre-amps much more. I am not familiar with the DJI system, however. After years of using wireless systems I switched to two-sound system setup. I use R5C’s sound track as a scratch track for synching with my second sound system in post. I leave R5C sound in Auto mode to make sure that I record without clipping regardless of the environment. The proximity of the microphone to the talent is the key for clean, rich recording so the camera has to be reasonable close to the sound source, even when using an on-camera mic.. As my main sound system - I use a shotgun or lavaliere microphone with a 32-bit audio recorder, like Tentacle Track-E. The 32-bit recording does not require any sound level adjustment because is has large enough dynamic range to record any sound level the microphone is able to capture. I typically leave my second sound system running whole day of the shoot, Track E battery lasts 12 hours. This ensures that I don’t miss any important sound bites. The synchronization in post via sound waveform or time-code between two sounds systems works very well and it is easy to do (I use Davinci Resolve for editing). I hope this is helpful. Cheers!

@@Tellvia problem with my is I hook wireless lav direct to body so auto mode won’t work for me. When I’m not talking on auto the background hiss gets amplified and those moments between words are unacceptably loud. I do a lot of stuff in the field and it’s not as bad but I’m trying to find a sweet spot for my lav between its own settings and camera body. I have it close on Canon manual set to 25. Then transmitter at +3 and receiver at +6 but I feel like it could be better.

Hello, Mr. Tellvia. Can you help me with some answers, please? 1. Why the Canon microphones have intrerupting (drop out) and metallic sound? 2. With the Canon DM E1D attached and using channel 1&2, can i put a DJI or Rode Wireless receiver to channel 3, receiving sound from the two transmitters and use all three channel in the same time, leaving the E1D just for ambiance sound? 3.The Canon in built mic always is on channel 4? Can it be moved or deactivated and use something else on that channel? Thanks!

Hi Zet, thank you for watching and your questions. Regarding the sound quality of new Canon DM E1D microphone - my comparison to other microphones I own I would rate it as acceptable but not great. I have not noticed any sound drop-outs however. I use it as a scratch mic for sound syncing in post with a second audio system and like it for its quick connect/disconnect from the camera via the multi-function shoe. If you are using Canon R5C it has 4 audio channels that record sound on all 4 channels from a camera build-in mic in absence of input from the multi-function or the 3.5mm mic jack. With the DM-E1D connected to multi-function shoe and 3.5mm TRS mic input, Canon R5C records sound on CH1/CH2 from DM-E1D mic and CH3/CH4 (left/right) input from the TRS mic jack. The build-in mic in this scenario is not recorded on any channel. So, you should be able to be able to record 2 extra channels in addition to the 2 channels used by the DM-E1D mic since it is a stereo mic. When a 3.5mm TRS mic jack is not used the camera records on CH1/CH2 from DM-E1D mic (if present) and sound from the built-in mic on CH3/CH4. If only 3.5mm TRS mic is plug-in into the camera if will record sound from the TRS mics to CH1/CH2 and sound from the built-in mic to CH3/CH4. The allocation of the channels is automatic and can not be changed. I hope this answers your questions. Cheers!

Thanks for this review. I'm considering upgrading from an EOS R6 to the R6 II and since it also has the multi function shoe this is appealing. Although I do have to say that this video also highlights the 4 channel audio recording capability of the R5C. I'm wondering if Canons more 'pedestrian' offerings with the multi function shoe even allow recording in this way and with an audio source also plugged in to the TRS connection.
@Tellvia
@Tellvia Жыл бұрын
Thank you for watching. My understanding is that the user manual for R6 II is not yet available to see more details about it’s multi-shoe specs. The R5C records sound at 16 bit resolution. By today standards this is two too low as 32 bit recording is available at about $200 (Zoom F2) and in many portable phone audio recording apps. You still can record good quality audio with 16 bit but need to monitor sounds levels closely. With 32 bit recording the is no level adjustment nob at all, as it erodes the full range of sound the microphone is capable to capture with vertically no noise. This is why I use the in-camera or on-camera microphones only for scratch/reference track to sync in post with my second sound system (I use 24 bit and 32 bit sound recorders). I hope this is helpful. Cheers!

Great video and good testing methodology! The MKH 8060 sounds so much better than the alternatives, as to make it an easy winner in my eyes. Much better lower-frequency pickup leading to a more natural, "warmer" sound. It's also quite scary how awful the built-in mic was doing here also!

Hello. Thank you for recording this. You're the only one on KZbin testing the CanonDM-E1D at distance. Does this have an option for Directional Use? I'm looking to do a fitness video at 7ft with the subject and hoping to utilize this mic for this application. The subject will move, but just wondering if it's a good option,
@Tellvia
@Tellvia 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you for watching and commenting. The DM-E1D has an option for “shotgun” mode in which it is more directional (~90 degrees cone of sound reception) than when it is in stereo mode (~120 degrees cone). The best option for your project would be to use a lavaliere microphone with a wireless transmitter hidden under the cloth of the talent. The signal then could be received by the receiver plugged-into the microphone port of the camera. Here is a link to a well-regarded inexpensive system from Rode Microphones company amzn.to/3xJw6XY for such system. The kit comes with everything you need, including a lavaliere microphone. This will also be an almost half-price option, if you don’t own the new mic from Canon already. The best would be to do test in actual environment of the recording, as room eco, environmental sounds, changes in sound level and balancing with an accompanying music when the talent faces away from the camera would be difficult to edit in post. The lavaliere mic system will work much better in your project. I hope this helps. Cheers!

MKE200 is fine. IMHO. What happened top the focus on the R5c? Mine only gets difficult at 120 fps. And even then I just over expose it a stop and it's tight.

Thank you for watching and commenting, Scottie. I agree, and am pleased about how well the MKE 200 sounds in comparison to the new Canon DM-E1D. Regarding the out of focus shot I think I accidentally turned off the Face Af and tracking button, or may be because I shot in low light at the sunset.

Next time leave out your "processing" so we can hear what the mics' actual audio are like. Normalizaton, compression, noise reduction, de-essing are all distortions that you added. Maybe they improve the sound for one mic and ruin it for another.

I really prefer the most expensive mike. Maybe a harness to help with the weight. But that sort of defeats the purpose of run and gun. Decisions, decisions.

Just returned from the bike race event. Since it was a windy day I used the heavy tripod rig and Sennheiser 8060 mic since it has a better wind muff. It was heavy but worked well. I did use Canon DM-E1D on-camera for the waveform sync. Will compare the sound from both and send an update if there is anything new and material to report. Cheers!

Canon DM-E1D: 16 bit audio, lol. Is it still 1996?
@Tellvia
@Tellvia Жыл бұрын
Hi Sol, thank you for watching! I use this Canon mic only as a scratch microphone and 16 bit in auto mode is enough for that. I use a 32 bit audio recorders for primary sound recording. The easy smart shoe connection of this mic, however, is very convenient for quick camera setup. Cheers!

@@Tellvia Yeah, the form is so great I almost bought it. But it’s just ridiculous. Canon is marketing how great it is to be able to put the A/D in the mic and then transfer digitally to the R5C (which records in 24 bit 48k in AVC mode). Yet the audio quality of the mic is horrible, the stereo sounds wrong, and their A/D is 16 bit, lol. It doesn’t make any sense at all. Canon is just notoriously bad at audio. This is like a $30 Radio Shack mic.
