I do a lot of bird photography with an R6 and the RF 100-500mm. The lens is a bit short for smaller birds so I am excited about the R7. I did pre-order one primarily for the additional reach and the ability to put more megapixels on the subject. My 100-500mm will be equivalent 160-800mm. My typical workflow includes the Topaz suite so I am not especially worried about noise. Yesterday while shooting birds here in central Texas my R6 overheated. I was shooting stills only so it still worked but no video available and the entire camera seemed to slow down. That slowdown may have been my imagination but it seemed real at the time. Temp was in the high 90s but I was in the shade almost the entire time. I would have been willing to pay more for a similar camera with a better EVF and buffer. As it is I am willing to give up a little on the EVF and buffer. This could be a decently small and light package with the RF 100-400mm.

Early speculation is that the camera lacks certain tell tale signs that would indicate a battery grip. The door doesn't look as though it was made to be able to be removed, and the mounting holes are not present. Its not been discussed much in these early videos, I think because in some cases they were using pre-production models. But, Gordons' video gives us a pretty good look at it, and there is no lever to pop it off (again though, I think it was a pre-production model). I'm not going to say it is not going to happen, but right now I'm pretty convinced its not, and if/when that news is confirmed its going to be the thing people blow up over this time. But whatevs. Would be dumb to omit that though.

That was a good passionate review. I shoot the R6 right now, mostly wildlife, and I have been waiting for the R7 for quite a while. The 7Dii was one of my favorite crop sensor cameras. In wildlife photography you can never have too much reach, so a cropped 32MP image will serve my needs much better than the cropped 8MP I get from the R6. Also look forward to the improved AF tracking. The R6 does great with fast primes, such as the 500F4, but struggles with an RF600 or the new RF100-400. The RF100-500 does a bit better, but at F7.1 it’s not optimal. Birds in flight are one of the ultimate challenges. I look forward to putting the R7 through its paces.

I find it interesting that this review, along with three others I have watched point this camera to being a great backup for the R5. And you were all in Orlando for Canon sponsored unveiling tour. Is this something Canon planted in your heads or is it possible, just possible, this camera can and will be the main and everyday shooter for a lot of users? As Dan points out, it has the insides (sensor excluded) of the R3. I might add the R5 and R6 both have the dreaded 30 minute video time limit whilst the R7 has unlimited video time as long as you have enough card space and battery power. The relocation of the wheel on the back is no big deal. I'm old enough to recall the introduction of the larger wheel on the back of the Canon cameras and it was odd then, but we all got used to it and that wheel became a fixture on every EOS body. Sometimes change is difficult, because we all get in a comfort zone.

Would love a comparison of R7 with R6 for a casual wildlife photography enthusiast (if that’s even a thing!). Also, would love to understand the total cost of ownership with recommended canon and 3rd party lenses for each of these bodies. Curious about what body + lens combos makes best sense for someone who wants to use this as a primary camera (like for birthdays, family trips, weekend getaways, kids sports, kids portraits, fall photography, etc.) along with wildlife/sports oriented trip like birding, safaris, skiing, racing, etc. So hard to find this kind of a comparison online and I suspect this is the market Canon is targeting with the R7 and R6 (albeit for a more serious enthusiast).

So I have time to have a coffee while the buffer clears, well that's a plus point :) It's not a brand new sensor - you've got it wrong. Canon admit that it is the sensor from the 90D but they say they've made some tweeks. Really clean up to 1600 ISO? - you mean just like the 90D. Could that be because it has the same sensor? Just asking The problem isn't lenses - all the RF and EF lenses fit and work. The real problem is that the R7 is a replacement for the 90D and we were all waiting for the replacement for the 7D mk2. 1. Weather Sealing - not as good as the 7D Mk2 2. Hits the buffer at 1 second, clears around the 12 second mark. 3. The sensor is not one of the new higher ISO sensors. That's their problem. They just delivered a camera that the wildlife community doesn't want. It's is Canon's version of Microsoft's Vista.
@learningcameras2 жыл бұрын
During our press conference, they elaborated that it was not the same sensor as the 90D. Now, whether they were exaggerating that claim or not remains a mystery for sure. Weather sealing is also like the 90D. I absolutely agree this is a 90D update which is why I compared it to the 90D way more than the 7D but it's also $300 cheaper than the 7D2 at launch not adjusting for inflation so they priced it like a 90D update. But as a 90D update, it's really impressive but if you want a new 7D update, first of all it would have been more expensive and the R7 will seem underwhelming for some things
@doghouseriley47322 жыл бұрын
@@learningcameras If you check the sensor, it is exactly the same size as the 90D. Canon have confirmed that they are original 90D sensors that they have "tweeked". E shutter on the R7 should work fine in that situation. The light bulbs are probably good enough that you won't see much banding and there isn't really fast action or panning shots. A lot of wedding reception venues we shoot at though use decorative lights with horrible bulbs that flicker like crazy so those give us issues with E shutter.

This camera would be very appealing to someone who already has an R5 or R6 with a few RF lenses and is looking for an APSC backup camera. Talking about image quality and high iso performance. I don't shoot 4k so I would love to know if there is a huge improvement with the 1080p setting compared to the 80D.

Thank you guys! Two questions. 1- I know an RF-A-RF Speed booster does not exist, but would it be possible? How about EF-RF speed booster? Will it work in these cameras? 2- For the R7, do you get sound in 120fps/1080p and 4K/60p?
@kernzilla2 жыл бұрын
No sound in 120fps. Same as R6, where it provides clip slowed 4x
@kernzilla2 жыл бұрын
And the forums seem to indicate the speed booster will work, but not confirmed.

everything is fine with this camera but when will canon release "affordable" and still high-quality f1.8/f2/f2.8 rf glasses?
@Jay-xq1dc2 жыл бұрын
Hi, great "preview-review"! I'm new to system cameras. I want to do BIF and I'm planning to get t he RF 100-400mm. I'm going to do 99% photos and 1% videos. Will it be a big difference between the R7 and R10 for me? I don't care about the dual slot memory. Does the increase in MP and IBIS justify the 50% price increase of 500$?
@learningcameras2 жыл бұрын
Hey! So the extra MP doesn't mean much and if the lens your using has image stabilization, you will be fine without IBIS. But the R7 does have better weather sealing, it's a larger grip which might be better with a 100-400, and the viewfinder is larger and better so there are a few hardware improvements as well.

RE lenses, could you add the Viltrox EF-RF .71 speed booster ? Would that work on this camera and give you a full frame look and an extra stop??
@naturealbums2 жыл бұрын
I initially dismissed this camera as replacement for my 7dmk2 because had expected a stacked sensor and better evf but It's grown on me I've pre ordered. I was wondering if you could try testing AF and image quality with the Metabones EF-RF Speed Booster® ULTRA 0.71x I would love it if it works thank you Dan really looking forward to your in dept review, I will be using this as a birding wildlife camera.
@learningcameras2 жыл бұрын
So far I have not seen a sub $4000 camera with a stacked cmos sensor so I wasn't expecting that. Sony would probably be the first to implement that. I'm curious about the adapter as well. Canon didn't have an answer on that question. The EVF isn't amazing but it's not bad enough to not buy it. I think the hardware of this camera is slightly below the 7D but the price is lower as well. I think the 7D2 originally cost 1799 and that was a while ago
@naturealbums2 жыл бұрын
@@learningcameras When I say stacked sensor In my mind was comparing this as a birding camera with the OM-1 has both stacked sensor and a very good evf it's certainly a notch above the R7 and good price but I went with R7 because I have Canon lenses. Thanks for the comment.

Hello, guys as always is really nice to watch your video. Well I will wait a bit more but it seems that this is the camera I have been waiting for, kind of, but I would personally love a comparison between the R7 and the R6, in terms of Image Quality and Dynamic Range, also nobody is talking about codecs, is this camera shooting 10 bits in all modes? I own the EOS R and a BMPCC4k, and ideally, I am trying to build a set of equipment that will be like BMPCC4k & BMPCC6k pro and then EOS R6 & EOS R but since the R6 overheats is not a choice for me, now is the overheating in the R7 is more manageable and as you guys said it looks like the only modes that overheat are the ones oversampling from 7k I think it will definitely be a good companion to my EOS R (EOS R7 A cam, EOS R B cam)I don't really care about APSC or full-frame just quality and AF.

The best Canon R7 initial review posted yet. 11:50 Loved how detailed you got explaining the 4K recording options. I understand that 4K60 Standard has no crop using some kind of line skipped trickery, but can you clarify if there's a crop in 4K60 FINE? I'm considering this over the R6 as the R6 is still quite unsuable for extended periods of time due to the overheating in 4K60. EDIT: I rewatched it. So 4K Fine mode is 30p only??? Is this correct?
@learningcameras2 жыл бұрын
Appreciate that! There is a crop in the 4k60 fine. It basically turns it into around a micro 4/3 camera in that mode but it does amount to more detail and more in focus. It could be great for wildlife/sports if your not at a high ISO. 4k Fine is up to 30p so they still have 24p. They do have a 4k60 fine but it's an additional crop that does a full pixel readout
@michaelbell752 жыл бұрын
@@learningcameras Thats a shame. No idea why its so hard to get 4K60p without a crop on a small sensor camera.
@learningcameras2 жыл бұрын
@@michaelbell75 you can still shoot 4K60 without the additional crop, it's just not oversampled so the level of detail goes down a little bit compared to 4k24 fine or the 4k60 crop. I show examples in this video in the video section

While I like most of the features of the R7, with video and AF near the top of my list, and how its performance might improve further with the use of a .71X focal reducer (wider field of view, greater light gathering = lower noise, and shallower DOF using "full-frame" lenses). One of my main concern is the the low res EVF, with only 2.36M dots. I tried using the R6, and wasn't thrilled with its 3.69M dot ETF. The R5's 5.76M dot EVF looked more natural.

Need some help, can't decide between the R7 and the Sony A7C. The Sony has a full-frame sensor and access to more Lens. The R7 has 4K 10 bit 60p which the A7C does not, the lens selection is not as diversified as the Sony though, and its APS-C. Tough choices. Both are the similarly priced too. Thoughts?
@learningcameras2 жыл бұрын
If you are using it for video the R7 is better for sure. If you are shooting images, I still prefer the R7 ergonomics but the A7C will have better image quality thanks to the full frame sensor.

4:11 Clealry seen there is absolutely no weather sealing around the SD card doors. So the moisture from even a light rain has direct access to memory card slots. Personally I would not take this camera to any rain.

Shame 😕 I dont know if it's a preproduction sample, but I hope the final product will have seals, this is a bad idea. I need a camera that can handle brutal rain. And wid etemp ranges and moisture. But I agree the seal thing makes it a no go for rain.
@petrpohnan8752 жыл бұрын
@@mtbboy1993 For a brutal rain you need to look elsewhere. R7 would handle it for may be a minute. Find a site with R6 disassembly and check the ridiculously weak weather sealing. R7 won't be better, rather worse. Night and day to e.g. 5D Mk IV.
