This video doesn't make any sense, your testing methodology is flawed. I've been using the Canon R8 since release, sure the internal recording is impeded sometimes due to overheating, however once you record videos through the Atomos Ninja V, it doesn't overheat. I've been using this R8 + Ninja V combo to shoot long form events, interview, and even timelapse (Ninja V Function), Never once it overheated or turn off on me. Btw to get clean feed from the Canon R8, you don't just press the info button to hide the info display this way you're still not exporting clean feed through HDMI. There's a function in Canon's Menu to enable that feature, it can output Clean feed through HDMI and still show the info display on the internal screen to judge exposure and etc. It seems to me that you didn't dive into the Canon's Menu deep enough to look for the HDMI External function.

@@morgonaut I possess a diverse collection of cameras, predominantly Sony models such as the FX6 and FX9, geared towards achieving cinema quality results in productions. Nevertheless, I also maintain a selection of more affordable and budget-friendly cameras to cater to varying client budgets and production requirements. The Canon lineup, particularly the R5C, R6MK2, and even the R8 for its compactness and portability, sees significant use in my work. I employ these cameras without encountering overheating issues, especially when recording externally to the Ninja V or routing through an external capture to a vision mixer for live production. I would like to strongly request that the expression "R8 has Hidden Kill Switch!" be corrected. The reason why the external output signal is cut off after every 30 minutes is because you are not following the basic etiquette required when recording externally with an EOS camera. This is common to many EOS cameras, not just the R8. On some page of the menu there is an "HDMI display" item. The settings here are key. [📷+🖥️] : Be sure to select this when recording externally. [🖥️] : This is set by default. Do not select this when recording externally. This is the reason for the misunderstanding that there is a "Kill Switch".

Any Camera I own overheats at 4K 60 eventually. Recording internally around 15 minutes here in Texas in the Summer Heat shuts down the Nikon and Canon cameras that I own. So I just shoot 4k 30. I have had the R8 using Ecamm Live Pro on for about 4.5 hours on without it shutting down. But I have extra cameras, and I shuffle them using rotation scenes. Usually at night time I get no overheating but the warning reached 2 bars at an hour and a half when I finished my recording with car vlogging. Great Picture quality and without an IBIS but with digital stabilization only it's ok. BTW I use dummy batteries for all of my cameras and use the regular ones when out and about. Cheers!

@@morgonaut R5C have a fan so does the panasonic GH6 which makes a difference. But I believe some cameras especially with one card slot are for families and not professionals or content creators and unfortunately You pay for what you get. There are some great things with this camera and there are work arounds also. Ulanzi now sell fans that mount on back of cameras. Problem with that is, they need another battery source. Fujifilm has a fan that can work with their cameras. I own a lot of cameras there are plusses and minuses to each one but some companies do not think things through or cripple that camera to have less features then there top tier so it will not encroach the sales of those items. R5C's are Full Frame and have the megapixels plus they are cheaper than the C70's which are cropped sensored. Why did you get the R8? It has a smaller battery like the RP. It doesn't do 8k. My R6 II doesn't either but it never overheats unless you are doing 4k 60 for 15 minutes in this Texas weather in the shade. That is better than my Nikon Z6II and Z7II will do in the same circumstances. Also I take the Marketing from these companies with a grain of salt. What I like doing is to test it out and if it doesn't work it's either shipped back or sold to someone who wants it. Sorry for the Rant! Everybody wants the best product for the cheapest price and the only way to have that option is to wait 4 to 5 years when the price is reasonable. Just got the R8 for a "webcam / studio cam" and its working for what I needed. I really enjoy the direct webcam mode to use on the computer for external recording or video streaming, but I still seem to get better qualtiy if I use HDMI out to a capture card. The one piece of info I was looking for (found your video) is does the HDMI have 4K output, and I dont think it does? I am only getting what looks like 1080P HDMI even with my 4K capture card. I use the R5C for my field recording, so the R8 should do but if no 4K output that is a bit dissapointing. The HDMI output timeout can be changed in the otpions, so I wonder if that is a new feature or just a setting you needed to change?

But something like Teams, it seemed to like the webcam mode just as much as my capture card since it cant handle the resolution/bandwidth of the capture devices.

I bought this camera knowing it had overheating issues if shooting 4K 60fps. The thing is it won’t be done continuously and shutting down the camera to help cool down. But I didn’t know the HDMI kill switch, that really sucks. Have you tried a test with an external battery to see if that helps with overheating? Warning, use a cable that connects the USB-C to a V-Mount Battery or USB-C to Dummy Battery directly. Do not use those cables that split in different points to be attached to each other. Use a full single cable.

@@morgonautI’ve been doubting about Canon’s honesty ways back even before they launched Canon 5D Mark III (minimum improvements but still charging big bucks) ‘till they very recently got better with this R Mirrorless line (not as good as compared to Sony). I know you were being sarcastic about “I’m not a millionaire”, neither am I… But you own 3 Canon R5C’s, that’s +$4,000 USD each camera. What’s spending like $40 bucks on a cable to see if maybe that way you can get some extra time without overheating at 4K 60fps? If it doesn’t work you can keep the cable to power one of your R5C’s. And what’s best, that money won’t go to Canon’s pockets as they don’t fabricate USB-C to P-Tap cables like Kondor Blue does (Or a USB-C cable to USB-C cable to power through a 65W capable PowerBank). Anyways, nice test. Helped me to know about that kill switch as another flaw of the R8 and even making me think why I didn’t go with a Sony FX30.
