what focal legnth is that bird shot at 30 second timestamp. Amazing shot overall... not bad I don't have any hands on experience with long lens specially like this but that 6.3-9 aperture makes me think it's not a good lens but man. Thanks for this actual footage - great lens....
@mattkempphotography6110 Жыл бұрын
Thanks for your nice words. Every clip is shot at 800mm f/9. As @TheMrNeffels pointed out in the comments, the 800mm @ f/9 has a shallower depth of field than a 400mm f/2.8. Dusk /dawn shots might test the performance of a sensor at f/9 but it performs well in daylight. The smaller aperture will put a lot of people off this lens but I hope this video restores some confidence. I run Antarctic photo tours so this will be fantastic down there. We have weight restrictions so it ticks all the boxes.

If I want to photograph at F9, I will set it manually!! In some video parts, the "busy" background is very obvious. But, you have 800 mm for a very affordable price.
@mattkempphotography6110 Жыл бұрын
For the price, it's a great lens and an affordable 800mm as you mention. Do you have the 800mm f/5.6? I would ideally like a wider aperture option but that comes with additional costs in price, weight, flexibility, practicality. I run trips to Antarctica and we have weight restrictions on flights, and this new one is more suited.

I haven’t used the 800 f/11 prime to compare. Which body are you using it on? Provides have less elements to move around so that makes sense, but I thought it would only apply to the faster primes. I guess they are only 2/3 of a stop the difference and there’s more glass to shift

"Blazing sunshine".... that's the key statement here. F9.1 is very unrealistic for use in my home country of Wales. Getting a useable shutter speed for wildlife at f9.1 is going to be a hell of a challenge here. I use an f5.6 lens and I often struggle with the amount of light available when shooting wildlife. The usual excuse of shooting at very high ISO's and then spending even more time (and money) in front of a computer screen using noise reduction software to rescue images is not my idea of good time photography. Image stabilisation is not the answer either. I can get very sharp images using a bean bag or tripod (and I wouldn't consider using an 800mm lens without either) but that cannot compensate for subject movement.
@mattkempphotography6110 Жыл бұрын
Definitely a challenge in Wales. I lived in the Uk for 7 years. Canon needs to make you an 800mm f/2.8 😅 that would turn some heads with a 12 inch front element.

Fun fact. If you have lets say two R5s next to each other and one has a 400 2.8 and other has a 200-800 f9 at 800mm f9 and they are both taking pics of the same animal the 800 f9 image has a shallower dof. Obviously much tighter framing too.
@mattkempphotography6110 Жыл бұрын
Excellent fun fact. Thanks for sharing :) Also, it's dependant on focusing distance. The DOF at 15m is about the same (the 800mm subject will be twice the size) - I love this stuff
@TheMrNeffels Жыл бұрын
@@mattkempphotography6110 focus distance doesn't matter assuming the lenses are side by side and subject is at same distance. 800 f9 will always be slightly shallower dof than 400 2.8. Obvious downsides of light and much tighter framing at 800mm.
@masina9447 Жыл бұрын
That's only true in an apples to oranges kind of way. If you cropped the 400 f2.8 (or used the 2x extender), it would indeed have more bokeh and a shallower depth of field than 800 f9.
@TheMrNeffels Жыл бұрын
@@masina9447I don't see how that's an apples to oranges comparison. That's a very real world scenario. Also cropping wouldn't change dof. Using a 2x would but you do need to stop it down for sharpness so you're then looking at a $14k cost vs $2k for not even a stop faster.
@masina9447 Жыл бұрын
@@TheMrNeffels I'm not arguing with you about cost, as that makes comparisons with the 400mm f/2.8 ridiculous in the first place. I doubt the superior optics can overcome a 2x crop or 2x extender. But whatever calculator you used for DoF is affected by crop. Physically, 400/2.8 is 60% larger than 800/9, so the larger entrance pupil must give you shallower DoF. A 2x crop on the 400mm f/2.8 (for identical subject framing) will make it equivalent to 800mm f/5.6. If you attach the 2x extender, the camera will likewise show you f/5.6 max aperture. 800mm f/5.6 equivalent will obviously have shallower DoF than 800mm f/9
