Enjoyed the vid, Zach! I'm in the camp that prefers the zoom over primes in this focal range. I had the 35 1.8 and 50 1.8 prior and this lens had made those absolutely unnecessary. It can't replace a good 1.2 or 1.4 aperture prime, but the trade-off to have versatility just makes this much more usable for me. I think the heft of the lens is notable, but I've also hand held my camera with this lens all day a couple times without much issue. Not a lens for everyone, but everyone should rent it to give it a try to find out if it is.

This lens is absolutely crazy good. I shoot events and I used to use the Sigma 24-105 f/4 adapted. Being able to shoot in a theatre with the exact same settings but at 1/4 the ISO is a total game changer, the images are just so CLEAN! The inconvenience of its size and weight pales in comparison to the inconvenience of changing lenses in the middle of a shoot and risking missing a great shot. I still love my primes for casual or more controlled shooting, but for events and weddings where you have to always be ready, this is a dream come true.

This is a game changing lens for me. I totally respect those who choose not to go for it, but I couldn't be happier. Almost never leaves my camera! I rented an RF 70-200 f/2.8 for this weekend's wedding and I'm super excited to try this duo. I never saw myself leaving primes and I will definitely keep my primes as backups in case I ever (heaven forbid) break the 28-70 during a wedding day or just want a lightweight setup for travel, but that lens is my true love ❤️

I've always been a prime shooter often lugging an 85mm on one body and 35mm on the other. The versatility and almost prime like quality of 28-70 would make this a single lens solution for many occasions. Weight wise, this lens on one body can't be any heavier than carrying two. I'm soon gonna give this a go.

Finally, a different take than the most I hear on this lens. Helps me to consider my choices wisely. I would love to go for this lens for all that it offers, but the weight is a big-big dampner. I find even 24-70 2.8 (older version around 1 kg) unweildy. Moreover, I find it difficult to precompose shots in my mind in the standard zoom range. Primes are a joy to shoot. Again a personal take. Excellent review Zach!

This is my favorite lens. I was fortunate to purchase this before even having an RF mount body, so it was available refurbished from Canon for less than $1,800 US. I love having near-prime aperture available with the 28-70 focal range. I do use this lens for video and it works great with the R5 or R6. If you check Canon's website, somehow this lens is rated for 8 stops of stabilization attached to the R5 or R6. Yes, you read that correctly - Canon rates it for 8 stops attached to the R5 and R6! With the available f/2 this lens is great in lower light and for really setting off the subject in video. Because of the lens's weight, it is really quite easy to get great results. If you still have the lens on rental - give it a go. Most people are surprised you get the max stops of stabilization without this lens having image stabilization built-in. Thanks for reviewing my favorite RF lens!

The 28-70 F2 is indeed a good alternative to primes within its range. The problem is that my photography won't settle for good. "Great" resides at 1.4 and 1.2 and can occasionally be found somewhere between 15-28mm and my photos tell that story. I happily sold my 28-70 F2 and bought a R3 body on which my 85mm F/1.2 now permanently resides next to my 50mm F/1.2.

I don't know if I agree that great is reserved for only the fastest aperture lenses. I do think the new RF zooms are some of the best lenses I've ever used. But you're right, there is something incredible about the RF 50 and 85. I definitely want to get into the 50 at some point. How do you like the R3? Very curious about that one. Thanks for watching!

Lol great photography doesn’t reside only at 1.4 and 1.2. Great photography resides in the photographer’s ability to capture an incredible image. Not judging your artistic skills, but this lens should be more than enough to make your work “great”.

I’ve been lucky to shoot with the RF 28-70mm f2L and the RF 24-70mm f2.8L. The IS on the 24-70mm makes such a big difference as does the wider 24mm. Yes the 28-70mm has that extra stop and shallower bokeh and is slightly sharper but let’s face it both of these lenses are sharp and both will produce superb wedding, portrait or general purpose landscape shots. My fav portrait lens is the EF 85mm f1.4L it too has IS and creamy bokeh and that extra intimacy without being in the face of the subject like 70mm is. So in the end the RF 24-70mm f2.8L is for me and not the RF 28-70mm

great video and great points of view. As i only shoot my children running around, primes won't work for me and I'm not getting 2 bodies just for family photos. I do love the look of prime lens and i truely believe the f2 zoom will get me close to that but won't miss a family candid shot because i wa switching lens. You're absolutely correct, it depends on your style. In the end showing the photos of zoom vs. prime to family and my wife, they'll just focus on the subjects captured, not the slight more blur from f1.2 vs f2. thanks and keep up the great videos!

I bought this as my first lens with the R6. The reason I got it is because I don't have any primes to replace and it seems to be a good alternative that will last the test of time. I also want to do a lot of hiking with my kit and although this is heavy, it gives me a lot of flexibility with the weight. My dream kit eventually is the 85mm 1.2L DS, 100-500mm F4.5-7.1L for wildlife and the 11-24mm f/4L (all RF). That way, I can take one or two lenses with me on hikes and heaps of options depending on the type of place I am going. I havent fully research all those lenses, especially the telephoto lenses, but in principle thats the goal. So far I am super happy with the 28-70mm 2L though. Feels effortless to take great photos and the colours are great in low light even. No regrets.

A very good video which makes me thinking. I was considering to buy this lens but I am also a prime fan boy in the 'traditional' focal length. My standard combo is the RF 15-35 2.8, the RF 50 1.2 and the RF 70-200 2.8 and two R5 bodies. The biggest mistake which I made was selling my EF 35 1.4 II. I would certainly take a great RF 35 L Lens again as my 4th lens. I hope Canon will launch this lens soon. If I do a long hike over couple of days I only take the RF 24-105 which is also a great lens but I leave it at home when I carry my dream Combo with me.

The lack of IS doesn't matter. It offers an 8 stop stabilization through the IBIS of the R5/R6. Just like the stabilized lenses. It's actually the only lens capable of the full 8 stop IS without having in lens IBIS. Thats because it creates such a huge image circle and therefore allows the IBIS to do more work.

@@TheZachMendez Haha whoops meant to say 28-70. Since you said it's heavy in this video I guess I am asking as a matter of perspective. If you are used to shooting an event handholding a lens as heavy as a 70-200 L2.8 IS II and can do so without too much perceived strain then anything lighter would not feel too heavy. So my question is is it considerable heavier than rigs you have been used to handholding and shooting for an event prior to trying it out.

Great video and samples! I'm constantly in tight and ever changing wedding situations (especially getting ready and first looks) where I need something wider than 35 one second and a head shot the next. literally. And I just don't like cameras and lenses hanging by my side. its unwieldy, makes it hard to move a lot especially to squat and shoot details or unique angle, and hits chairs, and even kids that get too close...not great. I can get decision fatigue quickly as I feel like I need the 24-50-85 range not just 24/50 or 35/85. I love the look of primes though and really need the low light ability of at least an f2. While I like a little more bokeh this lens was made for me and ill be getting one soon. Will probably pair with an ef 70-200 in the bag and leica q across the body for candids and party photos to rest the hand. Have the 35mm but will probably even just keep an extension tube in my back pocket for macro details or use the q. this can truly replace everything except a tele for big ceremonies.

Enjoyed your content here & I agree, my second shooter has this lens and it’s amazing but it compliments there style of shooting more so then mine, he gets his composition by zooming in and out were I make the fixed frame or prime lens fit into my compositions, also the fact I shoot a lot with my Sigma 50mm 1.4 art and I definitely hover around f1.4 a lot means I will miss having that option to open up to f1.4 which helps seperate my subject in those situations were the background is very flattering or uninteresting also allows a bit more light in a dark environment. But I would still enjoy this lens fo the documentary part a wedding especially the ceremony. I think here is were it could really be an advantage as it’s not practical to be switching lenses in run and gun environments.

I forgot to mention that I live in Berlin/Germany: Here the RF 28-70 2.0 costs almost 3,800 EUR - converted back to dollars, that is more than 4,000 dollars! nevertheless it is worth this price to me!

Yeah that is a heavy cost, but worth it if you can really use and appreciate that lens for your work. Thanks for watching!

I could never go for such lenses, which do everything but nothing really well, just versatility. I like 1.2...1.4 for bokeh, for extra light, for sharpness, etc. The 70mm f2 is almost decent but it doesn't even compare to the 85mm 1.8. Plus zoom lenses are much more damaged, especially those without internal zoom. It collects dust, and all those moving elements inside break down much faster

This lens reminds me of the formation of the Soviet Union... The old empire of DSLRs are overthrown by the small, egalitarian mirrorless systems, only to be converted into a dictatorship regime of gigantic, larger than ever before mirrorless titan glass.
