Most of the RF lenses are EXPENSIVE! There are a few that aren't and two of the cheapest are pretty similar. Take a look at this video to compare the RF 50mm f1.8 STM and the RF 35mm F1.8 MACRO IS STM.

Ahhh finally! Someone who does a great job at explaining the difference! I have the 50mm and looking to get the 35mm. I did not know exactly if I should do it or not and you have me convinced! I am getting the 35mm! I shoot a lot of tight spaces and to see that side by side shot of you shooting was perfect! Thank you!

Yea, if you shoot in a tight space, the 35 is really helpful!

I've tried both lenses, and the 35mm practically lives on my camera because it can literally do everything, whereas the 50mm is a bit limited in my experience, though it's really good at what it does. I sold the 50mm to my friend, but the 35mm remains my favorite lens, despite the fact that it's the cheapest lens that I currently have.

Thanks for the video. I just bought the R6. I have a 6D Mk2. So I have the EF50 f1.8. Then today I found reviews on the RF35. I decided based on yours and others’ reviews to get it. $750 AUD from Amazon Australia. I won’t bother with the RF50 as I think the EF50 works well on both the R6 and the 6D2.

Recently picked up the RF 50, have to say I think it's a great lens for the price, very enjoyable to use. I have the EF 35mm f2 IS and it seems to work very well with the adaptor - do you think the RF 35mm is significantly better in your experience?
@TonyMellinger

I have both the ef 35mm f2 and the RF 35mm f1.8. The biggest advantage is you don’t have to have an adaptor. As far as quality, you won’t notice a difference.

Hello and thank you for this video. Sorry I am French and I do not understand technical English very well ... So I will be buying the Canon eos RP (small, light and not very expensive) very soon, so I would like to know what the best Lens on the Canon RP (I only take photos, no Videos): Canon RF 35mm f / 1.8 Macro IS STM or Canon RF 50mm f / 1.8 STM? Which one has the best image rendering for photos? Are they close enough in terms of image quality? Thank you in advance for your answers, Sincerely, Philgood ...
@TonyMellinger

They are both about the same quality in image quality. I think the 35mm is probably the more versatile lens, but the 50 is less expensive.

There’s also the difference in stabilization between the two focal lengths. 35mm will be more stable regardless because it’s a wider focal length. Honestly though, the 50mm handheld looks really good.

I love that the 35mm can become a 56mm if you throw the cameras in crop mode It's almost a 2 in 1. But nothing beats a 50mm it just works every time.

@@TonyMellinger yea man, I also bought the Yongnuo RF 85mm 1.8 after experience with 50mm, I highly recommend. It is tiny, light, and autofocuses about the same as canon primes (on R5). If you like the cheap Canon RF primes, I don't think you'll be dissappointed with the Yongnou either. It gets CRAZY results for a $300 lens. The lens hood is cheap feeling, and the packaging is terrible, but then again at least it comes with lens hood! Still Recommended!

@TonyMellinger

I think it would do alright. I haven’t done much studio portrait work and typically i prefer longer focal lengths for portraits, but if you want a 35 that is a little bit of a Swiss Army knife, this would absolutely work!

@@TonyMellinger Same, however I'm still on the R so 24mm on the F4 restricts me to ~35mm @ 4k, which is ok for indoors but there's times when I really need something wider. The existing 15-35mm F2.8 is just far too expensive so this new 14-35mm sounds real interesting. However it seems it will be cheaper for me to trade-up from the R to the R6 than purchasing this new lens. Once you've done a review on the lens I'll have a further think ... :-)
@TonyMellinger

@@ZakDeadlight you’re def thinking right. If you could sell your R for 1500 and spend an extra 1000 to upgrade to the R6, that would be much much better if an investment, especially for video. Just the AF enhancements alone is worth 1000 let alone the incredible quality of 4k

I'm inclined to lean toward the 35mm, at least on the R5, since you can crop in for a tighter frame without worrying about losing too much quality when you're starting from 45MP. The 50 would produce more background blur, however, so.... who knows. I guess you're right, for these prices, buy both!

@@TonyMellinger The data I have read indicates that the 50mm is not only very sharp, it is faster to focus than the 35mm. Hits the mark more often. I was considering the 35mm, and already have a 50mm. If a person is not getting great results using the 50mm, they are doing something wrong. Optical Limits and Photo Review have data / tests done on both lenses. The lens is smaller and lighter than the 35mm, and great for the street shooting. I can use the 24-105mm in place of the 35mm, in good light -- yes it is slower, but not all that much heavier or longer in length than the 35mm. I believe I am covered! It is true the 35mm, now on sale for $399 is a good value. Way better than 50mm -- nahhh!
