CANON SX740: WILDLIFE REVIEW

I love that you’re not a gear snob and help us to find cameras that might help us in wildlife photography, no matter our skill level. This is helpful! I’m gonna look for a gently used copy of this camera that’s affordable! I’m just a general photography beginner/enthusiast. I tend to like small cameras, regardless of sensor size. I have the canon sx540, a pretty good and cheap bridge camera $300 when i purchased 2 years ago, and I think it’s 24 or 28-1200. I really like it for a small cheap and light camera with pretty good colors. I also have the LUMIX zs50 which is also a small pocket camera, that I got used (almost brand new) with 24 or 28 (I just can’t remember)-720. I am kind of interested in the LUMIX FZ300, its stretch only goes up to 600, but it’s weather sealed, which seems kind of nice for outings! Anyway, thanks for your review and ideas!

You have the best reviews! They are practical, highlight nuances that you can't find on the spec sheet, and show examples of the performance! Thank you. I wish there was more competition in this area. I used to have a Nikon S6800 (only 12x optical) and took it everywhere with me until it fell off a truck as it was taking a delayed photo, ruining the shutter mechanism. Despite it being lower-end, I could get some great wildlife shots if I was clever. The only time it performed really terribly was in low light, which is confusing to me because my phone can do excellent low light, but I've read that these compact cameras still really struggle with it. It's strange to me that there is not more demand for these with how much more convenient they are for travel than a DSLR or comparable setup. On the other end, there are situations where the phone camera is very practical, but I often find it ergonomically difficult to get the shots I want, not to mention the need for zoom in most wildlife situations. Seeing as how the A1000 has been discontinued, I'll probably give the SX740 a shot.

I own of these. I find it convenient to use on business trips and in situations where professional cameras are not allowed for example concerts or sports events. I have used it for shooting wildlife but as there isn't a viewfinder it is difficult to shoot fast moving subjects

Hi Stafford i have the sx740 great pics.i take pretty good birds in flight.also i have the kodak az901 90zoom nice pics,but just got the nikon p1000 WOW..i brought a manfrotto 290 fluid ballhead, lim's camera stablelizer.i still use my sx740 alot.i take alot of veggie,flower,birds,rabbits,landscape and other pics in my communitygarden.

I've been in the market for the Canon SX70hs but they're listed as back ordered by Canon. Do you think "back ordered" means discontinued or is the SX70 just a temporary casualty of the chip shortage? I've called Canon PR and they seem to think back ordered means just that...but they didn't sound all that certain. I still shoot the SX60hs and find it great for shy, perched birds that is very comfortable to hold and carry.

Bruce, yea they are backordered. I see the nikon p1000, p950 and canons sx70 and 740 all the time as backordered. So adorama and other can get you one if you wait. Sometimes the wait is like 2 days, other times it can be 2 months. Thanks for watching as well. The a1000 from everything I have read is discontinoued.

Hi, thanks for the great review! I’m totally new in photography and I’m looking for a good camera for safari and for normal vacation-photos. It must be easy to use and compact like this one. Do you believe I can manage this camera? Could this be a good option? I want to get the most out of the camera I get, but I just don’t feel like my iPhone can keep up anymore. Thanks in advance!!

Yes it is way better than an Iphone for sure. If you want something small there are a few options the sony hx99, the canon here and the panasonic z80. All pretty close to the same quality of images some have trade offs. There are of course stronger cameras for wildlife but if you want something that fits into your pocket these are about the only options. Hope this helps.

I just bought the SX740 HS, what is the best setting if I will use the camera to take safari wildlife photos?

Low iso, low shutter speed to get the most quality on the animals. I might have a video on the best setting but you can view my p1000 camera setting because it is essentially the same thing.

Thanks for the video! I’m brand new to any photography, and just looking around for a camera to help with my bird identification. I use 8x magnification binoculars, and have a 20x spotting scope. The LUMIX FZ80 and Canon SX70 have been recommended, but I don’t see myself taking pictures of birds in flight or maxing out a 60+ zoom. What are your thoughts in comparing this to an entry level bridge camera for those needs? Thanks for your insight :)

Sadly the z80 LCD viewfinder screen is lack luster by todays standards. The sx70 is pretty good. It depends on your expectations and if you enjoy viewing the animal through the scopes or binoculars. For me I always want as much zoom as possible. I seen a bald equal the other day using X83 zoom could not get closer. It thought it was a bald eagle but need the extra zoom. wish I could be more help. So for me I always go with the max I can afford hope this helps.

Hi Stafford, sorry for yet again.... other question. Your tips are extremley valuable! Would you say subject tracking on the P1000 is good? I can't seem to find any tutorials on how to use it properly. Is there any tips you would give? Would love to catch a bird in flight!

Thanks for watching. The subject tracking for the p1000 is not very good IMHO. The one thing that nikon does to the cameras is sideline the focus and tracking. The focus is just ok and you have to play with it in different lighting. So for me birds in flight is going to be a tougher issue. I am not saying it can be done but by todays standards with the R5 it is just point and shoot good vs the p1000 and bridge cameras are slow and clunky by comparison. Hope this help !

Great review, how is the camera with Macro? I’m currently using a Canon SX 60 and it’s showing it’s age. Not sure the upgrade to the SX 70 is worth it. I love shooting dragon flys and birds and flowers. What are your thoughts for a replacement camera under 700. Thanks

For midrange zoom it can give good output....

Yes with some care you can get nice results that are hard to tell from a DSLR. Hope this hellps.

What did you mean at 2:10 about clearing jpege

Yes, sorry i meant that clearing the jpeg buffer. Basically the camera can lockup or slow down. Many times you can just easy up on the shutter button and the jpegs will clear the buffer and you are right back at shooting 5 to 10 fps. Hope this helps and thanks for watching !

I hope for a succesor to a Nikon A1000. I waited to buy one, and now I can't find one on my country. I could buy one used on eBay, but a succesor would be appreciated. Maybe in a while we could see something like that? Why do you think is unlikely?

sorry just seen your reply. Well all point and shoot cameras are not being produced much or sold. Sadly the company looks at how to make as much money versus what is best for the customer. We might be at the end of point and shoot cameras even with the ones that have huge super zooms. Also covid and lack of parts/screens make companies concentrate on higher profit cameras. They stop selling the a6600 sony because of this until supply chain issues are solved.
