I bought my first DSLR last year. I was looking at entry level models and use it really for my KZbin. The D3300 has 60 fps 1080p video, which was the deciding factor to get it. At the time I didn't know about Sony and Panasonic being great for video, but I think that neither of them were as cheap as the D3300. The Kit lens is great for my filming too. I did get a 35mm prime, but the kit lens is just so much more flexible with the zoom.

Tony and Chelsea rate the Canon 5DsR more highly than the Nikon D810. However, DXO doesn't see it that way at all. The D810 is the 2nd highest scoring camera, while the 5DsR is the 32nd. It scores the D810 at 97, and the 5DsR at only an 86. Big difference! Why this large discrepancy in outcomes?

Hey, I think the STM nifty fifty is no longer in that "toy" build quality discussion. I mean it's pretty sterdy and I even dropped it a couple of times, took it like a champ.
@AcidTripwire

The 50mm STM is a great improvement over the previous model but compared to the Ultrasonic lenses with the gold ring it definitely feels a class below. It's on a weird middle ground between the basic lenses and the mid-range to me.

Jack Dooner Or compared to the kit 18-55, which now feels like a toy. So yeah, totally fine build quality for being an entry level and very cheap lens.
@alexfiftyem
@alexfiftyem 8 жыл бұрын
AcidTripwire Hey, put that way if you compare it with an all metal Zeiss it feels like a toy. I'm talking about it taking into consideration what it is and where it stands, and from there I say that entry evel cheap lenses being toy-like is no longer the case. I mean I can't even imagine a kit 18-55 taking the beating my 50 took since it came out.
@AcidTripwire
@AcidTripwire 8 жыл бұрын
+Alex D. For the money, the 50 STM is an incredible piece of equipment. I got it for £73 grey market, a complete steal. I was planning on upgrading to the 50 1.4 Ultrasonic one day but I don't really think the improvements are worth the heavy price increase any more... We use an 18-55 kit at work for passport and profile photos and it is just a clunky and completely unsatisfying experience in comparison to the STM.

Lens design used to require massive manual raytracing calculation, then very expensive mainframe computer time. After all these years of cheap supercomputers and raytracing being a common job for the CGI industry, I'm pretty shocked that focus breathing is still not being addressed.

why are so many people saying the 7Dmk3 is long over due? IT HASNT EVEN BEEN OUT FOR 2 YEARS. it came out september 2014. the Original 7D was released september 2009. YES the d500 is better, but the nikon D300s came out in July 2009. thats 6.5 years later!!! The canon will need an update to compete better, but it doesn't have THAT much of a disadvantage when it comes to taking PHOTOS. don't be expecting a new one anytime time soon. they will probably be taking all the latest and greatest tech of NEXT year or further to make it the most relevant to its release date. (when ever that may be) expect a new 6D to come first or the 5d4. and don't think they will release those in 2016 either. remember. 2017 is Canons 80th anniversary and 30 years of EOS.

Great video, Tony. Thanks for the updated info. I am loving the D7200 + 200-500 combo for wildlife. I think the focusing system of the D7200 is good enough that I don't feel compelled to upgrade to the D500 at this time. I'm guessing that you can also crop slightly more with the 24MP D7200 at the expense of 4 fps.

I don't get this 70-200 must have for portraits. A 85 and a 135 prime and I don't give a crap about a 70-200. A zoom is either slow or a backbraker, let alone the price and the sharpness. The Canon 70-200 2.8 Is USM II is the only expensive lens I ever bought and hate to use, it is so heavy.
@therealscottgrogan
@therealscottgrogan 8 жыл бұрын
Work out more.. . . The zoom gives you more flexibility when shooting events. If zooms didn't have advantages, we wouldn't have them.
@TheRcEngineer
@TheRcEngineer 8 жыл бұрын
I take two bodies with different primes. I don't see any advantage of a zoom and 2.8 is too slow imho, there are pros who claim between 1.8 amd 1.4 is a world of difference. And you are right many pros run around with their 70-200 but not all and the ones I prefer pretty much allways use a prime.
@therealscottgrogan
@therealscottgrogan 8 жыл бұрын
You are a pro, right? So you realize that having 130 lenses to choose from verses two could have advantages. Not all events are shot in super low light, and you really can't beat the background separation of a 200mm lens at f2.8. Just because you have found something that works for you, doesn't invalidate others choices. You carry two cameras, which is actually more cumbersome than carry 1 larger lens. And if you have a 70-200 on one camera, you can have a 24-35mm f2 on another body that pretty much covers every situation at any event. How often do you need to shoot wide open at most events anyway. Or you can have a 18mm-35mm1.8 on an extra APS-C body to allow you to take lower light pictures that are not so limited in depth of field. I could go on forever about the advantages of zooms, and if you really think about it, you will realize, they can produce amazing results

+TheRcEngineer 70-200 is sharper than many older primes.
@TheRcEngineer
@TheRcEngineer 8 жыл бұрын
It is just for years I run around with stupid zooms and never questioned it. Then I started to realize they are slow have less sharpness and two primes cost about the same are 3 to 4 times faster give better separation and with two bodies I only need to make some steps foreward or backward to compensate for the zoom range. I use a double sling system, one body on each side, look ridicoulus as hell but I think most pros would prefer this to a zoom if they give it a try. It is just so hard to break your habits. On fotowalks I pitty my collegues but I also could convert some of them. :)

If you used the Nikon 70-200mm with a short extension tube, I think you could still focus far enough for tight portraits. Because of the extension tube the lens itself would be focused closer to infinity, which would reduce all or most of the breathing effect.

It is also interesting to add Tony's oft-mentioned recommendation of buying used gear, as well. Your value equations can then change based on what your intended result is for your needs. For example, if wildlife photography is not your primary aim or does not primarily influence your business in photography, a used 7D (Mark I) and an EF 400mm f/5.6 L will produce excellent results at about half the price of the D500 alone or about 3/4 the cost of a 7D Mark II body.

Not mentioned in the video: if you're like taking pictures in situations of high contrast and exposing to the highlights, Nikon bodies generally give far cleaner results when lifting the shadows in postprocessing. Though this is no longer completely true, as with the 80d canon have finally adressed this drawback.

You keep referring to the focus breathing on the Nikon 70-200mm as a focus breathing problem. I don't consider it to be a problem at all, but rather its very useful. When shooting a wedding processional/recessional with subjects moving towards me, the fact that my 70-200 becomes a 60-130mm is very helpful when trying to get close subjects in frame. So in my opinion, having the reach at 200mm for subjects far away, and the ability to open up to 60mm for tight spaces for near subjects is the best of both worlds. To me, losing some compression on the telephoto end for close ups is an easy compromise.

Just one comment on the nifty fifty comparison: I recently switched from Canon to Nikon and had both of them. By the way I mainly switched because I wanted to enter the full frame world and Canon doesn't have anything appealing in my budget right now (bought the D750). When comparing the prices on those lenses, I think it is worth mentioning that when you buy the Nikon one, while it is more expensive you also get much more for your money: it comes with a lens hood, a focus scale, a weather sealing gasket and a pouch. The Canon one has none of that. Just my two cents... Thanks for another great video!

Just as an aside. The flattening of the subject is not the focal length of the lens it is the distance from you to the subject. So a cropped image from a 135mm shot would (should) look the same as a shot taken at the same distance to the subject with a 200 mm lens. Of course that does not address differences in sharpness or bokeh.

I think the two little STM pancake lenses are excellent low-cost prime lenses. The 24mm EF-S goes very well with the lower-cost APS-C bodies. The 40mm on a full-frame body faces the competition of the 35mm f2, but on a crop body the 40mm is a really good short telephoto. Both of these lenses are just about fast enough at f2.8, and their performance is already good enough wide-open.

Why does M4/3 scare you in low light. You can shoot at a faster Fstop and still get things into focus. I mean, unless you are trying to shoot in the dark. . . . There are advantages to M4/3 and the GH5 will have a better sensor. I mean it won't match full-frame in terms of noise, but most full frames are cropping down anyway. Might as well use a sensor made for it. You can push te GH4 to ISO 12800 with useable results. Just remember the GH4 is over two years old and a lot of the time they are comparing it to newer cameras.
@Lionheart2323
@Lionheart2323 8 жыл бұрын
+Scott Grogan the sensor in general doesnt scare me. Its the gh4 specifically. I have the gh4 and the g7, both m43, and the g7 is much better at higher iso. I would say the gh4 tops out at iso 3200, in terms of being useable. I would never dream of using iso 12800 on the gh4. My g7 on the other hand, maybe.

Changed over to Nikon for my sports stuff, have the 200-500mm and it is fantastic when paired with my D700 and D4. Just bought the tamron 70-200, mostly for sports so focus breathing less of an issue for me. Only one i'd change in your comments about landscapes would be putting Sony a7rii over the 5dsr (probably on par with Pentax) a) 42mp is a fair way to 50mp, so whilst it looses out slightly on resolution, the Sony has far better DR b) you can utilise any lens you want (canon included) with an adapter, since you're usually doing manual focus anyway c) tilty screen lacking on the canon which is a must-have for landscapes keep up the good work!

Voigtlander FE 10mm, 12mm and 15mm Zeiss FE 18mm and 21mm You can complain about the lack of AF but at these distances I fail to see the problem, you even have things like peaking, EVF and I.S to help you get the shot. You also have the Batis and Loxia lines from Zeiss and other native options that seem to match the best glass out there. The Loxia 21 for example is even better than what Canon or Nikon offer. Best wishes.

Hi, I just joined you guys and find you soon very good! I am thinking of buying a D500 with a 300mm F4 (all Nikon) with the 1.4xTCIII. I am relatively new to wild life photography. Given how I am I need to do handheld, and cannot handle a heavy lens. Will this combination work?

I assume that Canon and Nikon have mastered optics, So why is there so much difference between lenses? Also websites really don't allow high megapixel uploads, so unless you are printing images there does not seem to be a reason to have high MP camera.

+Tony & Chelsea Northrup You may see that the Canon has higher P-MP but when you work out the percentage of the total extracted there's only a slight difference (Canon 70-200mm 2.8 - 33/50 = 66% while Nikon 70-200mm 2.8 - 27/36 = 75%; 24-70 C - 32/50 = 64% and N - 21/36 = 58%; T 70-200 C - 36/50 = 72% and N - 28/36 = 77%), so in some instances N wins and other C wins, so don't always just see higher and think better. Tony, maybe you can include these sorts of calculations next time so viewers can see how much each camera can actually extract percentage wise. Also what are your thoughts on the 'new' Sigma 50-100mm f1.8 as there isn't much being said about it.

I can't imagine why the percentage matters... but if you care about that, you'll be happier with the lowest megapixel camera you can find.

Tony & Chelsea Northrup percentage shows which camera/lens combo works the best. 50MP might sound great but if you are only able to get 60% of the MP (30MP) out in the end then its a bit of a waste isnt it? A camera with 50 that pulls out 50 is perfect but not possible but whichever can achieve nearest to their actual seems to be a better choice? or am I misunderstanding?

Recently moved to a Canon Rebel T5/ 1200D from an old cheap Sony DSLR... Really liking it. There are so many options for lenses. Really enjoy using the 50mm f1.8 stm, and also my 24mm f2.8... Great lenses which both give a 3mp improvement over the kit lens. I did consider the D3300, but as Tony said, the D3300 is more expensive and that 50mm 1.8 lens is more expensive.

You say the 7Dmk II is an old camera, it really isn't. It was announced in September 2014, which makes it less than 2 years old. The original 7D was announced in September 2009, so by any measure the 7Dmk II is only just entering its mid life.

Seriously thinking about a DSLR and narrowed the field down to Canon T6s or 80D - like both and can't decide whether to make a value purchase or technology/functionality purchase - leaning towards T6S but think the 80D is really a great choice for both photo and video. I will soon make a decision (end of year/inventory sales). Like your videos and the team aspect you and Chelsea share, gives some much needed variety to the genre. Thanks for your channel . . . You are SOOO right about price point. Dollars do matter. It does make a difference. And it is good that Canon holds that slot open. No, I don't think Canon is loosing any money on that lens. But having an inexpensive option may convince a novice to experiment with a new technique he''s been reading about, thereby demonstrating to himself (and maybe a wife) that maybe, just maybe he's got some talent, and that he did not make a crazy mistake when he picked up that camera in the first place.

Tony, thanks for all the superb content you and Chelsea have on YT. I'm about to spend Christmas reading, learning and inwardly digesting Stunning Digital Photography. A couple of questions following on from this video. You mention the Perceptual MP per inch (PPI), and say that the kit lenses for Canon & Nikon resolve at around 9 PPI. Is this on a computer monitor or print? And what size/resolution is this. If I shot a 24MP image with my 750D and 18-55 kit would I see 9ppi on my 27inch iMac at full screen? And how would this 9ppi measurement compare with say an iPhone 6S? Also, please may we have a few more recommendations and tutorials for street photography? Thanks again.

The superior but still affordable Nikon 50mm f/1.8 G can be used as manual lens on a Canon body with the use of an adapter. The flange distance of Canon body is shorter than that of a Nikon body. As far as I know most Nikon lenses don't have internal aperture motor. With a Canon body and an cheap adapter the aperture of a Nikon lens can be controlled.

I'm researching cameras prior to making my first purchase, which will likely be just after Christmas later this year. Toward that end, this was a very informative video, if a bit overwhelming for someone very new to photography. My bias right now is to choose between Canon and Nikon (I'd rather stick with the main brands), so I'm curious what you'd recommend for someone who wants to start with casual shooting but wants to also experiment and get more proficient over time? Right now I can't say what kind of pictures I want to take (landscape, wildlife, sports, or what not), I just want to get started with a decent camera so that I can learn about the nuances of photography, lenses, etc. Thanks again for this video and for your time!

So I'd be interested in your opinion of the A7RII vs the 5DSR with available lenses for landscape. It would seem like lenses like the Batis 18 and Loxia 21 on the Sony offer a great Sony package for landscape. Do you have to go to the Zeiss ZE 15 and 21 to get the same capability with Canon on the 5DSR. I don't tend to think of the TS-E 17 as a landscape lens but I guess you could use it. Yes, I know the Canon has higher resolution but the Sony appears to have better dynamic range and lower noise. For Landscape you really didn't recommend a lens that really drives you to a specific platform. Be interested to hear you talk about this.

Is the focus breathing issues with Nikon maybe due to the larger flange distance? Maybe because the rear element has to be further from the sensor to begin with?

I just got a 360 camera and a lot of people have the same complaint with these camera's that most overheat after just a few minutes of use but I haven't seen any overheating problems, since I live along the coast of California, where it's pretty much 60-70 year round!

Nikon D500 doesn't have Wi-Fi, it uses Bluetooth Snapbridge instead. Just a different technique, but still quite the same approach with sending pictures to the phone. A D500 user furiously tried to find WiFi in the camera, so a good thing to point out :)
@dorianarbos
@dorianarbos 8 жыл бұрын
To ellaborate on that, the way i understand Snabridge, it uses Bluetooth Low Energy to keep the camera paired to any other device, (to prevent having to set up a Wi-Fi access point in your camera, which is battery consuming) but it automatically switches on 802.11ac (WiFi) when transfering files. Which is really clever. WiFi file transfers without having to set up a WiFi Access Point and minimal battery drain the rest of the time. But yeah, you´re right that it´s a good thing to point out, since you´d probably expect WiFi to be used the ¨traditional¨ way, and then not find the option to set up your Access Point.
@jvborehed
@jvborehed 8 жыл бұрын
+Dorian Arbos Yeah, I think you're spot on there! Haven't tried it myself, but searched all around the Nikon website for the D500 and the term Wi-Fi is nowhere to be seen. They do though promote Snapbridge - although for now just for Android phones. Sigh... I'd hoped that when Nikon released this functionality with the camera at least they would have a app for the majority of the phones out there. Not supporting iPhone is just plain... Dumb. Although, as you described, Bluetooth low energy is really cleaver and time saving. I hope the rest will follow.

***** I´m sure iOS support is coming eventually. Not so much because of the iPhone, but rather because of the iPad. Taking a picture and being instantly able to show it off in a 10¨display? yes, please. But i do understand why they went to Android first. In short, much larger userbase, specially outside the US, covering about 80% of the smartphone market in one go. Even the S7 variants alone outsell their respective iPhone 6s counterparts. Nowadays, if you want to add smartphone interoperability in your device, you kinda have to go to Android first, then iOS. But yeah, Kudos to Nikon for figuring out wireless. let´s hope their solution is not too broadly patented so that others can indeed follow.

Tony, now that I've used the Canon 5D MkIV I must say the Dynamic Range, Higher MP and Autofocus make the camera on par and if not better than the D810 in most areas. Also with the new Canon 24 - 105 F4 II and it's unbelievle sharpness it's a much better improvement over the previous Canon and current Sigma.
@jeffdmsl
@jeffdmsl 8 жыл бұрын
James Mifsud James Mifsud D810 is still the king of dynamic range, the 5D MKIV along with A7rII is behind by 1EV. D810 beats it in mp count and dynamic range, but the 5D MKIV only now matched the ISO performance. Plus the D810 is cheaper than a brand new MkIV and 3 years old, it'll definitely get an update (d820/850) within the next year or two and out perform canon once again.
@tobyhawkins

jeff d The D810 has more dynamic range at base iso, the 5D IV has better DR from about 800 iso on, so it really depends what sort of photography you do.

Great video. I've been a Canon shooter for about 5 years now.. and I believe this actually when Nikon started moving ahead with sensors and Canon has been catching up since. It's amazing how the entry level D3300 handles ISO3200 and 6400 for example, and appalling how bad the Canons were at the APS-C ISO game up until recently.. and still.. even the D7200 still works better then any Canon at high ISOs.. not to mention the D500. I hope there's a 7d markIII coming.
