If the Yongnuo lens is as flimsy as one of their external flashes I recently purchased, better beware. First time I changed the batteries the battery door broke (all plastic parts). Battery door impossible to keep closed after that. I was able to get my money back because I used AMEX for the purchase, and I purchased a (more expensive) Canon flash. Very satisfied with the Canon. There was nothing wrong with the functionality or performance of the Yongnuo, but that ONE part of the flash that they skimped on made it unusable. Sometimes, cheaper is really cheaper.

@1994FishFreak focus tests were done on a canon, if you listen you can even tell that by the sound of the shutter. I might be wrong but I doubt it.

I borrowed the canon from a friend and really liked it. I seen the yongnuo on eday and bought it as I seen a few people saying it was better than the canon. Took a month to get here and my copy is horrible. Anything 10ft or more away needs a macro adjustment of -17 to -20 to get focus. Under 10ft it seems fine at 0 though not as sharp as the canon and as you said the auto focus accuracy is not the best. Wish I would have seen this before I ordered it
@TonyAndChelsea9 жыл бұрын
Matthew Augsburger I think the high demand (based on the early positive reviews) has led to manufacturing problems... growing pains for Yongnuo, who will need to implement better quality assurance to improve consistency and quality. Of course, that will also raise their costs...

The "football" shaped bokeh in movies is anamorphic not low quality glass...

Joseph Le and then he says round bokeh is a sign of a high budget movie and football bokeh the sign of a low budget movie despite the fact that those "low budget" anamorphic lenses cost upwards of tens of thousands each
@cdihwamyeong24939 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the time for putting up the review. Though one comment I'd like to make about your comment regarding bokeh. Bokeh in cinematography can vary, and I feel your comment regarding football shaped bokeh balls as "bad bokeh" can be taken as personal taste, the idea that football shaped bokeh balls is a low budget feature is entirely inaccurate. Films shot with 2x anamorphic lenses produce oblong, oval shaped bokeh that many cinematographers aspire to and can only be produced with painfully expensive glass. They are in fact more indicative of an extremely high budget feature. Thanks for your time.

Tony, please review the latest YN50/1.8 Yongnuo, Nikon Lens. It's already avialable on Aliexpress.com. ;-) Build from the pictures is slightly different, than the Prototype into early 2015, PetaPixel had posted. (no more golden font, and Canon red mount dot indicator) It does have a DoF scale, also 7-blades diaphragm. I hope it's a good alternative for the Nikon 50/1.8G FX lens.

The Youngnuo 50mm 1.8 has improved since you made this review. We have bought one some weeks before and it performes much better as it is rated by you. We also mounted the Youngnuo 50mm with the Fringer adaptor EF to FX to Fujifilm cams. Unfortunately AF didn't work because Fringer hasn't registered this lens to the adaptor. It will be a great pleasure for Canon and Fuji users who have both systems if Fringer make this lens work with the adoptor. We were astonished to see the images we made with the Yongnuo and Fuji cams. Some of this images are - depending to subject, light and situation - very cool and bluish compared to images made with Fujifilm lenses. We made some reproductions of book sides - text sides only - to sell the books on eBay. And this repros were much more clear and realistic as images taken with three times more expensive Fuji lenses. Fantastic plastic is an issue of environmental and not on usebility. A review of the 2019 made and sold Youngnuo is upcoming in our channel as soon as we gathered much more footage, stills and bideos with our newer lens.

Another point is that at its price (I paid $57 for mine) it is 'disposable' So it can be used in circumstances were if the lens gets damaged, no problem. If the Sigma 18-35/1.8 gets damaged, a much bigger issue!

$60 isn't much difference, the Canon is still inexpensive and seems worth the extra money. and yes, I'm a person that would gladly save even $20 if they were identical in quality. If this was a matter of $500 vs $1100, I think the cheaper option thats "almost as good" would get alot more attention than $50 vs $110.

Surprised that you say that the oval shaped bokeh at the edges of the frame is a sign of a cheap lens. The 70-200mm f2.8 II L does this as well. I was under the impression this occurs due to vignetting as you get further off axis.
@TonyAndChelsea9 жыл бұрын
operator911 You're right, it's definitely not exclusive to cheap lenses. But what I actually said was that it's a sign of a lower-budget movie, in which they probably still use expensive lenses, but perhaps not world-class lenses. And maybe that's not even true, it's just my own personal observation. This video has an example of a 50mm lens with great bokeh: kzbin.info/www/bejne/j2HEoGSefZKrbKc

Hey Tony I have a 50 1.8 question for you. I've got a nikon d7100 with the Nikon 50mm 1.8. I was shooting outside (hand held) in A-Priority. Almost all of the images came out fuzzy. Not blurry but the detail was lost somewhere. The EXIF says I was at 1/8000 shutter speed, ISO 800, and Wide open at f1.8. I've shot wide open before with a speed light at 1/250 and gotten sharper images. Any suggestions?

I'm looking at the build quality of these two products. When both lenses are brand new, one will focus on the performance. But how long will that performance last if the product is manufactured with the cheapest components? I mention this because I've had experience with my smaller point-and-shoot cameras physically wearing out in less than a year. Tony or Chelsea, in your experience is there any way to make a judgement on build quality for long term use? Do you go with the best brand manufacturer? Or do you just assume you'll get a year of two out of the lens and then have to upgrade when it wears out? Thanks, RJ

Hi T&C. I'm pretty new to the DSLR world. I mainly do KZbin videos which I used to use a GoPro clone for and want to use my Canon 800D more. Would the Yongnuo be suitable for making videos? I don't do 4k. As I live in Thailand, Ali Express is good for me and I can get one of these for £35 ($45). I have started doing stills too as the GoPro isn't great for that so I didn't bother too much before. EDIT: Just been on Ali site and it seems a Mk II version was released a few months ago with better image quality and less noise when focusing. This I can get for about £50.
@alex05899 жыл бұрын
Great video T&C (or is it C&T?), straight to the point and scientific enough so beginners know youre not taking sides. I wish the yongnuo (and this video) was out a year ago when i started out. Ive since "upgraded" to the canon 1.4 from the 1.8 and im disappointed almost everytime i use it. 50 f/1.8 is the perfect for newcomers. Ps. ever since starting photography, "bad" bokeh in movies has been really distracting especially when the lens is stopped down :(
@TonyAndChelsea9 жыл бұрын
alex0589 Thanks! Yeah, +1 to photography making so many aspects of filmmaking distracting. Now that we've been deep into making video for a couple of years, I get distracted by editing, coloring, acting, props, etc...
@StephanEilert9 жыл бұрын
Why are you disappointed with the 1.4 version? I have the 1.8 and, in the future, I want the 1.4 - not for the IQ, mainly, but I feel Im going to break my lens everytime I touch it.
@alex05899 жыл бұрын
Stephan Eilert Hi Stephan, maybe i have a "bad" copy but my 1.4 is kinda soft and fringes a lot even stopped down to 2.8. I upgraded because i wanted more light (2/3 stop from 1.8 to 1.4) since im on a crop- sensor 7d. The manual focus override is cool, i always felt like the 1.8 would break if i forgot to put it in Manual focus before turning the ring. It focuses a bit better than the 1.8 and is much better in low light but ive heard the motor breaks very easily, especially if dropped even once. Its still plastic, just heavier from the extra glass. For so much more money i expected a lot more build quality. I found myself thinking " why buy a 1.4 if you're using it a f4 most of the time?" a lot. I own a 400 5.6 L-brilliant- and an efs 10-22-soft- but fun and this lens is right in between those two in focal length and quality-sharpness. If you get the 1.4 make sure you get the cheap lens hood (doesnt come with) cause the flare is fugly. Hope this helps. Sorry if my english is weird, im francophone.
@StephanEilert9 жыл бұрын
alex0589 Interesting. I dont see need to buy a new 50 for me, not for a loong time, only if my 1.8 breaks. I noticed that it has a nice sharpness, but my t3i sensor SUCKS! I hope I get more money soon, to get a 7D or 6D, depending on budget. I dont have many problems with flares, yet ahha I live in a freaking sunny city, but Im looking forward to work with sports, so I think I should pay more attention to that. About hoods, I have my old 70-200mm tamron without the hood and colalr, and it pisses me off. I cant find it near, only in B&H.
@alex05899 жыл бұрын
Stephan Eilert 1- The T3i doesnt suck, its just not current-full-frame-3k$- nice! 2- I own a t2i and an original 7d. As much as i love my 7d for speed and build quality (you can throw it down the stairs... in the rain-no problem) Its not superior to the rebel series. Actually, the t2i used to be called the "baby 7d" because it basically has the same sensor. I even like the bigger screen on the t2i better. (t3i is very similar, only adds the flip out screen and sound levels) Id tell you to go full frame, 6d is affordable but not ideal if you want better focus/ shoot action/sports. You can also check for a used 5d ii, they are still very nice cameras. Just try before you buy. For your 70-200, i would get the hood, still less expensive than shattering the front element in some stupid accident! Cheers.

My Nikon allows me to nudge it for a lense that isn't quite nailing focus. Particularly 3rd party ones, you sometimes do need to tweak. I don't know if you can do that on the Canon. And if you can, can you do it on the lower end ones. For what it's worth I like the fact that Yongnuo exists, and will buy their 50 when it comes out. I think, you see, that they may be useful to put some manners on the big boys who are operating the nearest thing to a cartel I've ever come across. Anywoos, good video.

I am really interested to see if Yongnuo releases this for Nikon as that would be a bid difference. The Nikon "Nifty 50" comes in a $219 almost twice that as the Canon and if they keep the $60 price that would be a huge difference that Nikon can't ignore. Which I do own the Nikon and if Tony Northrup doesn't just let me know and I would happily loan it out to see another comparison.

I have been shooting with a Canon 50mm 1.8 for over a year. I bough a yongnuo 50mm off of ebay a few months ago for $58 including shipping. It took a month to get here. I have been shooting with it now for 2 months. I prefer it over the canon is every way. I have had better focus consistency and better sharpness with the Yognuo than I ever had with the Canon. I have also had less color fringing with the yongnuo than the Canon. It is definitely louder when focusing but that doesn't bother me. I think it comes down to the fact that these are extremely cheep lenses and weather you buy the Canon or Yongnuo they are not all equal.

DanceKomander Yeah, I think because Yongnuo is new and there is high demand for this lens, they might be having quality assurance problems during manufacturing, leading to shipping bad copies. We'll check back in a year and see if they get it sorted out... if they do, I bet they also have to raise the price.

Juan Reyes how did it work put for you? i am getting into photography (mainly on stage scenarios) and i am thinking i should get this lens. i have a canon 7d
@mab.t70229 жыл бұрын
Well in Canada it's really not worth it. Ebay for the canon 116$ and 83$ for the yongnuo. The massive image quality difference is surely worth 33$.

I noticed you published this video, then, some days later DigitalRev and Chritopher Frost make a video with the same objective :( were you the first to cover this one?
@TonyAndChelsea9 жыл бұрын
Lourenço Montibello I think so, but we all probably had to wait two months for our copies of the Yongnuo lens to arrive. I did watch the DigitalRev video, and was relieved to see that he came to the same conclusion (because I'd hate to have been wrong about the lens). I never have the heart to smash a working lens, though. :)

Yes, they're cruel with the gear, some times it's a pain to see those little cameras suffer :(

Yongnuo apparently will have Nikon clones on the market by the end of this year. I wonder if they'll try tackling the ultrasonic motor in AF-S lenses, or if they'll stick with body-driven AF. The latter would probably mean pretty poor sales, as Nikon entry level bodies don't have AF motors and these lenses are targeted at people on a budget.

ad ơi. chiếc yongnuo 50mm này dùng được cho canon 750d không ạ
