ചന്തയും മൈസൂർ പാക്കും | Is this really Asia's first planned Market? Where to try Mysore Pak?

Though my friend Reenu convinced me that the Devaraj Market in Mysore is the first planned market in Asia, when I searched it on the Internet, I was confused. In some articles, there is a mention about Devaraj Market as one of the oldest planned markets in Asia. However, there are also other markets from different parts of Asia that earned a similar appreciation through similar articles and videos, which left me confused.
Whatsoever, I should say that it is one of the selected places in Mysore that you must visit and explore when you are in this old city. It is believed that from the time of Tipu Sultan, a formal market was in operation here. Well, it is not just about its heritage value, but if you have any intention to try Mysore Pak in Mysore, you have got two famous sweet vendors very close to the market - Guru Sweet Mart and Shree Mahalakshmi Sweets.
On the evening before we left Mysore, we walked in and around the famous Devaraj Market. We didn't plan to buy anything from this heritage market except Mysore Pak. Though you don't buy anything from the market, a visit to this market gives us an understanding of life in Mysore. We were late, it was around 9:00 pm, but the market was still crowded. We quickly browsed through the market and came out to buy sweets including Mysore Pak. ഏഷ്യയിലെ ആദ്യത്തെ ആസൂത്രിത വിപണികളിൽ ഒന്നാണ് ദേവരാജ് മാർക്കറ്റ് എന്നാണ് എന്റെ സുഹൃത്ത് റീനു പറഞ്ഞത്. എന്നാൽ പിന്നെ ഒന്ന് കാണണമല്ലോ എന്ന് ഞാനും. കുറച്ചു വൈകി എത്തിയത് കൊണ്ട് പല കടകളും അടച്ചു തുടങ്ങിയിരുന്നു. പച്ചക്കറി, പൂജാസാമഗ്രികൾ. പഴങ്ങൾ എന്നിങ്ങനെ എന്തും അവിടെ ലഭിക്കും. നല്ല ചിട്ടയുള്ള ഒരു ചന്ത.
ദേവരാജ് മാർക്കറ്റിൽ നിന്ന് ഒന്നും തന്നെ ഞങ്ങൾ വാങ്ങിയില്ല. എന്നാൽ അടുത്തുള്ള മഹാലക്ഷ്മി സ്വീറ്റ്സിൽ നിന്ന് ധാരാളം മൈസൂർ പാക് വാങ്ങി, വീട്ടിലേക്കു കൊണ്ട് പോകാനായി. ഏറെ പ്രശസ്തമായ ഗുരു സ്വീറ്റ്സിലും ഒന്ന് കയറി നോക്കി, അവിടെ നിന്നും കുറച്ചു മധുരം വാങ്ങി. രണ്ടും ഒന്നിനൊന്നു മെച്ചം.

Loved the market tour. Probably it was on a festival eve and the market is too crowded. The tender banana trunk with leaves is an integral part of indoor festival decorations and they are in huge demand. The "champakali" sweet at Guru, seems to be so sweet with all the bees settling on it.🙂

Mysore Dasara festival is world famous for its tradition of celebrations, observed on the tenth day of Navratri called Vijayadashami. The 10 day state festival starting with Navaratri and ending on Vijayadashami. It's a state festival.

You should do a trip to Chikmagalur, Sakleshpur, Mudigere, Angadi and the historical towns of Belur, Halebid and Belawadi, sometime. Chikmagalur for the food, Sakleshpur for the tea and coffee estates, mountains and river banks. The other places for the Architecture of temples. You could eat Biryani at a small restaurant called Mubarak Hotel in Mudigere..

Wow ! I was wondering why you don't come up with a video filmed in Coorg or Kadagu( as the locals love to call their homeland ). Kodagu is one of my most beloved travel destinations in Karnataka.Whenever I feel like unwinding myself , the first place I think of visiting is Thalakaveri in Bhagamandala or Madikeri Fort, no matter how many times I have already been there .It is only a three hour journey from my home.There are many other attractions as well such as the Tibetan Colony at Kushal Nagar, Abhi waterfalls and Rajas Place in Madikeri. On one such trip, we missed our lunch and had to travel all the way from Bhagamandala to Virajpet in search of a good restaurant and finally dined at Badriya Restaurant near the Virajpet bus stand on the Mercara Kannur highway. ( I had visited this town a few times in 1979 and then this restaurant used to be run in an old tiled building at the same place ) It was a nice eating experience though the food was a little costly. So, looking forward to your Kodagu food Videos.
