Canteen Cup Tuesday - Breakfast Bannock & Eggs

Join me for another edition of Canteen Cup Tuesday. Today I cook Breakfast Bannock & Eggs. The last time I tried baking in a canteen cup it was a failure but this time it turned out perfectly. Then I decided to steam 2 eggs just for fun and I had a GREAT breakfast. Try it!
Bannock Recipe:
1 cup flour
1 tablespoon baking powder
1 teaspoon sugar (optional)
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 tablespoon oil
water

In this recipe you used the chicken wire and it worked well. You could also chop a small piece of a green oak branch to make 2 three inch 1/2" diameter dowels in the field with a pocket knife add a canteen cap full of water then add the the foil pack with the bannock/assorted baked items. The water will keep the dowels from charring,...and professional bakeries use steam in their ovens all the time so,...

Great job.. I made a perforated stainless sheet to fit the bottom of my cup I found if I bake over a fire I can put a couple coals on top and cut the time in half.. It's fun to play with things like that 'eh ?

It is. I will probably use the small SS cups on the interior next time instead of the galvanized wire...

Great video. Be careful with galvanized metal and heat. Doesn't take much fumes to make you sick. Not sure what temps would cause gassing.

Yep, I know about galvanized. I dont think it was hot enough for that, and it was not exposed to open flames...however I am going with something different next time

Well done. The only thing I would change is the hardware cloth. Hardware cloth is galvanized and when you heat it up it starts to vaporize. Trapped inside the canteen cup its likely it will contaminate your food and leave residue inside the cup. You can get stainless steel hardware cloth from places like mc master carr and other online sources. I would urge you to do so for your health.

Nice.. I make bannock all the time. I put 1/4 of powdered milk in mine. I like cooking mine over the fire though. Thanks for the video

I never steamed an egg before, I'll have to give that a try. I like to cook the biscuit dutch oven style with coals. It seems to cook faster all around and prevents the bottom from scorching. Though yours turned out great!

Always a good idea to put that air space in a ditch oven as well when baking bread. Well done again sir on the video. I really enjoy your videos you make them fun. But man I thought for sure you wouldn’t “Put a Drop”” on the eggs . 😂🤣

@@FloridaBoyBushcraftSurvival the first time I made bread in my dutch oven I put the dough right on the bottom of the oven. Man I had hockey pucks for bottoms and sponges on the top of those biscuits. LMAO That air space is the key you are correct. Stay safe out there.

I think you can buy mini cake tins that will fit in the canteen cup. My mother would call that a poached egg. We had special metal bowls to put into the pot. I now just use a small Pyrex bowl.

@@FloridaBoyBushcraftSurvival I have another idea. Use a tapered spam or corn beef tin. Use a can opener rather than the key so you are not left with sharp edge. I intend to try it in the next week or so.

@@FloridaBoyBushcraftSurvival I tried the bully beef tin and it works. It fits nicely into the canteen cup. It sits about 1/4 to 1/2 an inch below the lip. The narrow tapering allows a reasonable amount of water to reach the tin. Last night I cooked left over pancake mix by steaming it. Today I steamed some eggs and bully beef. Both worked well but needed better oiling. My next thought is to cut a piece of some of that BBQ hot plate plastic matting and fold it up into the bully beef tin. I haven't been able to find any small cake tins either. They are either too small and would barely fit one egg or they a just a touch too big.

Ive never had bannock. How is it compared to a biscuit. (Tasted wise) . i think id love to see you put a hotdog an a stick and wrap bannock bread around it . like a bannock corndog over an open fire. And maybe have some baked beans with it for a lunch recipe video. Sounds good to me. And of course with some hot sauce
