Loving your mission here Dara, but yes Canterbury Cathedral looks INCREDIBLE. oo Roly's fudge is awesome. the Cat café is right up my street i'll be honest hehe, but i lovvve the streets of Canterbury, so very beautiful. I spent abit of time in Canterbury as my best friend went to uni there and i missed her a lot haha, but we spent so much time wandering the streets and we did the boat rides, they are so fun. Your food looked amazing! Such a shame about the works, but like you mentioned it's super important so they can preserve it for years to come :D You've put the cathedral back on the map for us, thank you Dara, would love to show Brett he would love the interior of the cathedral. There really is something so special about cathedrals and churches, this one is glorious! Love your videos!

We loved your visit to Canterbury, Dara and Ian. Such a lovely city with so much history! Yes, it is so disappointing to see beautiful buildings obscured by scaffolding. But, as you mention so necessary to preserve them. As we know Henry 8th was such a charming guy! We enjoyed hearing the history and seeing the first drive though. The window is small , but after taking your money they just tell you to pull around and wait outside anyway! I'm afraid Henry not only doesn't deserve a place on Church stained glass, but even in history. But, history does include the good with the evil. Enjoyed seeing the tombs and the royal marriages were quite often dicey as you mention. Stunning Cathedral with all it's chapels! Loved the visit.

It really was interesting learning how ahead of their times those monks were! But the aristocracy back then ate rich, fatty foods and never bathed. Their hygiene was terrible. They ended up with gout and all kinds of diseases because of their terrible lifestyle! They just didn't understand what was healthy back then!

Some great shots of the Cathedral, love the Bar/Gate entrance. This place could give York a great run for its money! Some cracking old medieval buildings. Great that you can find a quiet spot away from the tourists. Wow the height of the roof inside the Cathedral is breathtaking. Poor old St Thomas, quite a ghastly history. Absolutely not, take Henry the 8th down. How dare they? A personal sun dial, how cool! Cousins marrying, hmm! So much fascinating history in this one! Yay, Lizzy ❤

The cathedral is stunning and it reminded me that I had been in a production of the play 'Murder in the Cathedral' about Thomas Becket during my final year in high school (a tiny role!) so I had been immersed in his story and that of his daughter. The play is written by T.S.Eliot, a very British play written by an American. He was an anglophile too.
@MagentaOtterTravels10 ай бұрын
That is so interesting! I love murder mysteries, and am a fan of T. S. Eliot... so I need to see/read "Murder in the Cathedral"! I didn't realise Thomas Becket had a daughter. Thanks for your comments. BTW, is your name Susan or did I just make that up in my mind?
@theresabigwideworld26329 ай бұрын
@@MagentaOtterTravels Hmm casting my mind back to last century when I was in high school!! I thought that Margaret a Becket (Thomas' daughter) went and pleaded for her father's life. It could have been some other totally different historical figures!

It is a bit sad when you visit an historic building and you see parts of it covered in scaffolding, it's great that it's being restored but annoying that what might be your one chance to see it has been spoiled. Although I think some buildings are like the Sydney Harbour Bridge, it gets painted from one side to the other, as soon as the painting is finished, the painters start again at the other side! I joke that this is the case with the Duomo in Milan, there's always some part of it covered in scaffolding, I made my first visit there when I was 12 and thanks to family in Milan have been a regular visitor over the years, I have never seen it without some sort of scaffolding somewhere!
@MagentaOtterTravels10 ай бұрын
Honestly, I would not mind about the scaffolding if I weren't a KZbin creator. That's funny about the Sydney Harbour Bridge... the same thing is said of the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco! That's great that you are able to visit the Duomo often... but unfortunate they always have some bit in scaffolding!

I did enjoy this tour very much. Absolutely fascinating. I love the period between the exit of the Romans and the arrival of the Normans. It was a really interesting period. Plus we studied the Canterbury Tales at school (even if it was written a little later). Nowadays the only tails we have time for are the 7 kitties we're fostering so the the fact there is a Canterbury Tails is hilarious. We've been watching The Last Kingdom on Netflix of late and I keep thinking that if I lived in those times I would've probably had a short brutal life. We wondered how did our ancestors survive? And survive must have - at least to have children or we wouldn't be here. 😂 A most excellent travelogue of Canterbury Dara!

SEVEN CATS?! That is a lot! I love cats, but developed an annoying cat allergy in adulthood. My son Trent has a lovely cat named Cleo. . You need to be filming cat videos for your channel! Catch them doing something funny and film a short! I would watch!! Yes, lives were short and harsh back in the day. They survived long enough to procreate and then died by the time they were 40! Survival of the fittest. Nowadays we don't need to be fit to survive LOL!

@@MagentaOtterTravels Somehow the 7 seven kitties got into a wardrobe this evening and were swinging on the clothes and they managed to pull down the entire rack. The first we knew of it was when we heard the almighty crash. Luckily no kitties were harmed during their shenanigans. It is a shame we couldn't get that on video. The kittens have been a... delight, but they should be going back to be adopted this week and we will be back down to our permanent cat and greyhound. However I have been reliably informed that the odds are we will be getting one of the kitties back permanently once she has been desexed. Cue eyeroll emoji. They are cute though.

Canterbury is my favourite part of Kent. It's about the only part of Kent I like actually. 😂 If you come by train from Canterbury East Station then you have to walk along the city wall to get to the city centre. Canterbury has two railway stations. East and West. Canterbury East is further to the West than Canterbury West. Confused? You will be. Didn't you stop for some fudge in Roly's Fudge Pantry? I always linger at the bridge over the Stour. The ancient hospital reminded me of Cadfael again. He's a medieval monk who's mostly a detective. He uses lots of herbs in his detective work. I'd put it up in the top 5 detective shows of all time. It should be at the top of your list of things to watch. 🕵♂ The hairless cats. That's what my head looks like after I've given myself a haircut. 😹 WHAT did you say to those ducks to make them flee like that? 🦆 How was the veggie lunch? The cloisters were my favourite part when I visited the cathedral. Couldn't walk round all of the cathedral because there was a service going on. I missed the central tower because I didn't look up. Did you say Thomas-a-Becket, even though the plaque tells you there's no 'a' in the middle of his name? QI episode confirms it. At least you pronoinced medieval properly. Lots of people pronounce the silent 'i'. There is a debate on whether Henry VIII actually ordered his execution or some knights just took things into their own hands and did what they thought Henry wanted. The priest that served food must have had long arms! It is said that Queen Elizabeth I took a bath once a year 'whether we needed it or not'. So how do you know if the sundial is pointed in the right direction? (The Chines used water clocks). My sister made an Airfix model of The Black Prince. (He didn't dress in black). The outro. Is that a bust of Trent behind you? The one with the big moustache? 😂
@MagentaOtterTravels10 ай бұрын
Have you not heard my Roly's fudge rant? Sorry, I know you keep telling me to watch Cadfael. I just looked up where I can see it ;-) The veggie lunch was good! But not as tasty as the scones in Alfriston from the last video LOL. I have now repented of saying Thomas Beckett's name incorrectly! The aristocracy's bathing habits were horrid! Trent's moustache is definitely from a different era.... or century! haha

Before the pedants pounds on you, it is now widely recognised that Thomas a Beckett, was actually Thomas Beckett. The error in his name was introduced in a notable book, which sadly had a typo in it.
