Cantering the gaited horse - part 1 (2016)

This video is a few years old and I do it slightly differently now, but it might help you guys to see this technique. Now I tend to use a small jump early on, but this is super good to help a horse that has a hard time holding the canter. You put a small jump at the beginning and then ask them jump it and then hold the canter, using the poles to help the horse stay upright.

Thank you so much for this video. My MFT is very fast and excitable....I have only been able to canter him on the trail on hills. I will work on this exercise. I'd love for him to have a slow canter.

So my mare when we ask her to canter it’s a very FAST pacey canter and she starts on the wrong lead 90% of the time, can this help fix it?

My horse will trot on the lunge but not in the saddle. I have found that your jump technique works pretty well for her, she has cantered about 4-5 strides after the little jump. Do you think she will be ready for the poles or continue the jump? Thanks!

What breed was the mare in the second clip? I rescued a gaited mare and I’m not familiar with gaited horses so I don’t know what breed she is.. however she looks and gaits JUST like that mare!!

What would you recommend to stop a gaited horse from cross cantering?

Yep, I wouldn't let a horse cross canter. I would slow down right away and restart.

Pacey, slinging canter. Take contact with this horse, instead of the kuck and go method, hoping the lightbulb goes on somehow. Because it looks to me like neither horse nor rider has a clue.
