Follow these simple steps to keep your canvas tent, wall tent, bell tent, or tipi tent in excellent condition.
Regular maintenance and cleaning is a requirement for all canvas tents - and quality gear in general. Cotton canvas tents are repairable and retreatable - keeping them in service much longer than plastic (nylon/poly) tents that end up in the landfill for 100 years.
It's a good idea to do a routine cleaning at the beginning and end of the camping season - especially before you store your tent for long period of time. If you're a 4 season camper, or are out in the field for extended periods try and clean it after every 4-6 weeks of continuous use.
How much cleaning your tent requires is highly dependant on your environment. High UV exposure and high humidity areas may require a more cleaning.
Prevention is key! All the little routine cleanings you do will save you the monstrous effort of deep cleaning or removing mold stains later on!

My business owns over 45 of these tents. As a commercial glamping hire company we find it necessary to unzip the floors and use a small waterblaster to remove the dirt, grass and muck from the base and sometimes inside. To clean any mould we soak the tent top in a large container with a solution of sodium percarbonate for a few days depending on the degree of mould. then we waterblast the canvas and they come up like new.

How often do you water proof?

Great question! We waterpfoof our tents after every 26 weeks of constant use. This is on average. The time to reproof the canvas can depend on the climate where the tent is setup. Very warm climates with lots of UV will need reproofing a little faster than others. The best protection is a weekly check-up of the canvas, which takes up a minute or two.

There's unfortunately no simple answer to that question. That entirely depends on the climate, the exposure, the intensity of the sun, the maintenance, the possible use of a double roof, the type and amount of spores/fungi/bacteria in that area, .... and the reason for reproofing. Every 6 months to every 2 years of continuous use. Cheers
