Canvey Island Floods 20.07.14

Video footage of the Canvey Island floods on July 21st 2014. The flooding made national news and heavily flooded roads, parks and houses. Pumping stations ceased to work initially due to a lightning strike and power failure.

It happened at the end of August 1968 after continuous rain . Drains couldn't cope and large cast iron gullies were lifted by the force of water . Newlands was hemmed in by flooding around Mornington Road to Larup Ave , and getting out of the camp on foot meant using the paths on the sea walls that still existed back then . Kids swimming in the streets and plenty of eels to be caught and jellied when they finally got the mobile pumps into action .

The dutch dug enough irrigation ditches to solve the problem but the developers just keep building new houses on unsuitable land.

maybe new houses should be built with legs on here and even then they can have parking under to. ?

Why did Canvey flood in 2014?

simple Canvey is below sea level.

Rainwater wasnt pumped out of the outfalls in the sea wall, due to pumps not being maintained properly, and due to the amount of rain over a short time period, it flooded. Nothing to do with sea levels
