Can you visit the beaches without staying at the resort? In other words, are they open to the public?

Thank you for your question! In Punta Cana and Cap Cana, many beaches are accessible to the public even if you are not staying at a resort. However, some beaches may have areas that are privately managed by resorts. We recommend checking local guidelines and visiting our website at everythingpuntacana.com for more detailed information on public beach access and other travel tips. Enjoy your time in the Dominican Republic!

Think of Cap Cana as a huge gated community where all of those high end hotels and resorts, beaches, golf club, marina and residential complexes are located. During my first trip to Punta Cana I wanted to visit Cap Cana and it wasn’t that difficult. All they asked me was to get a paid reservation at one of the restaurants that are open the public. I remember it was a beautiful restaurant by API beach, When you get to the main entrance you have to go through a nice welcome office, that is actually a checkpoint where they make sure you have your reservation. I guess they have options for people who show up and don’t have one. With my reservation me and my friend had lunch and couple of drinks and after expending about three hours at the ocean front restaurant we headed to the beautiful Juanillo beach and stayed there until sunset. For safety and cleanliness I liked the fact that everybody visiting go through that screening process. Some people may be bothered by it, but it’s totally worth it.
