Projected Capacitive (PCap) is one of the most commonly used types of touchscreens. Most smartphones and tablets utilize this technology. PCap screens have a layer of electrodes between the glass and the touchscreen. The layer of electrodes senses conductivity, such as from your body or a conductive stylus. PCap touchscreens do not work with thick gloves, but they are able to register multi-point touch.
Resistive touchscreens consist of a pane of glass and thin layer of plastic that are separated by a small gap. The user must apply a little bit of pressure on the layer of plastic, making it touch the pane of glass and therefore closing the gap. This activates the touchscreen. Resistive touchscreens are not as sensitive as PCap, but you can use different objects to activate the touchscreen, such as thick gloves, which is necessary for many manufacturing environments. A resistive touchscreen might not register touch, if you touch too lightly, and it cannot register multiple touch points at once, but resistive type touchscreens are more cost effective than PCap.
