You might want to make a small flash guard/shield to protect the wood behind the nipple when the gun is fired. You can cut about a 1/4" square opening toward one end of a 1 inch long X 5/8" wide elliptical piece of sheet aluminum or brass that fits over the nipple. It will stop the charring of the gunstock right behind the nipple.

(Mike Cullum) I've owned a 54 cal replica 1841 rifle for more than 25 years. It was my Arizona muzzle loading hunt rifle for many years. 90 grains of FF Goex with a Hornady Great Plains bullet. I took 6 elk with that rifle including a nice 6X6 bull. Really enjoyed this series on the 1841. Great memories!

I had an 1841 but it was a copy of the 1855 arsenal rework in 58cal I built on a Bobby Holt barrel for NSSA matches. Unfortunately I sold it.

I have a Euroarms 1841 .58 cal. that shoots well with a .570 ball seated with a .015 lubed patch over 45 grs. of BP @50 yds. Did you shoot .575 Minie bullets thru your Bobby Holt barrel?

I believe you mean Bobby Hoyt. I just got a jaeger rifle built by Ron Scott and Hoyt made the barrel. 58 cal gain twist and it produces cloverleaf groups. His work is second to none

I just got a replica made by pedersoli. Unfortunately the rifling deph and twist rate is not ideal for roundball loads. Also the ramrod that came with it is a bit shorter and thinner than orginal. Ordered correct reproduction and with a bit of work it fits and works great. Cheers from the U.S.A.

I would bet this system was dry balled more than we think, pounded down over the charge? If I get my hands on one? I tried it over my 62 but how inportant is the balance of speed or how fine on target?

Do you make a distinction between interchangeable parts and the "American system of manufacturing"?

Yes the American system was more dedicated to a contract system. Look at the episode for the Hall breech loader. When repairing original examples the different examples vary a great deal with parts being hand fitted to each fully finished rifle. The variances diminish around the 1840's and almost disappear in the 1850's. The M1861 Springfield and contract examples are fantastic for standard parts interchange. The closing statement around 25:00 says this and is very consistent with what I personally encounter on original arms here in the States.
