I realize this comment is from 6 years ago, but the origin of that aspect of his character is actually very sad. Hugo is inspired by Andre the Giant, who had a condition called gigantism. One of the symptoms of that condition is occasional painful, uncontrollable muscle spasms. Andre had them all his life.
