@checha32 I used a .375 in this clip. I use .30-06, .300 Win Mag and .416 caliber guns on most of my hunts these days.
@TheOutdoorsmanwithMax14 жыл бұрын
@2Devicevox This PH is using a .470 double rifle. You need to shoot solid bullets that don't mushroom when after Big Game like Buff and Elephant. The round needs to penetrate deep through thick layers of muscle and bone to reach the vitals. A shotgun slug while powerful would not wade deep enough with these species.
@USGiorgi14 жыл бұрын
@tippman98c1 Well I mean what else would they be used for?
@TheOutdoorsmanwithMax13 жыл бұрын
@M4land2c The .375 is great for big game and provide more range the the shotgun. In Africa however I have moved to .416 or .458 for Buffalo, and Elephant. The .375 is a tad small for me with those big species.

@BuckMcNeely did you eat the buffalo?
@TheOutdoorsmanwithMax13 жыл бұрын
@mustangsthree I use the .300 WM for larger game like like Elk, Black Bear, Bison in the US. In Africa it's great for Kudu, Zebra, Eland etc: I like it's impact power and the larger grain bullet for these species. Great all around caliber.
@waaaaaane14 жыл бұрын
@2Devicevox . Im from South Africa and have done a lot of big game hunting. Your 12 gauge might work. You would have to be very close to the animal with a well placed shot. The minimum caliber for big game is a 375, so you probably wont have the chance to try it out.

@tippman98c1 I wondered the same thing. It seems to me that using a person to steady your rifle would be counter-productive, as you've just added another less-than-steady human into the equation.
@AustrianJager13 жыл бұрын
The solids you used are BARNES? I used self loaded bullets from a German physicist named Lutz Moeller. His bullets are KJG (Kupferjagdgeschoß, cooperhuntingbullet) solid cooper with a hollowpoint which is protectet from a plastic apex. They are excellent bullets. Light and hard, shoot very flat, perfect penetration and deliver fragments, while the restbolt go deeeeep in the body of the game. Waidmannsheil from Austria!

@RadicalNH I have the trophy room but notice I'm wearing longs on these safaris. The PH likes the shorts in the bush. I asked them why and they like to get their legs scarred up by the thorns as personal trophies. You gotta love the PH's.
@deusimperator15 жыл бұрын
Bell used a 6.5x54 to take most of the elephants Shot placement sure but it is the sectional density of the FMJ 160 and 170 gr. bullets which made the difference. Unless you are shooting a 250 gr. tough FMJ your 300 Mag will not work even with a properly placed shot as it has to penetrate to the vitals to have an effect... or you can spray 30 rd of 7.62x39 and bleed it to death.

Cape Buffalo, probably the most unpleasant creature you could run across in Africa or anywhere else for that matter. Incredibly aggressive, can run easily twice as fast as you can, and as we can see, pretty damn tough.

@trevorthompson6 All 30 cal firearms are good hunting calibers. That will do the job on an Oryx for sure. As with all hunting scenarios shot placment with a good bullet is key.
@EdGringo7813 жыл бұрын
@13joethepro It's very hard to get a head shot on a cape buffalo. I've heard you have to hit them in the space between their horns. I'm not a hunter myself, but that's what I've heard from several people.

@gangstafoo9b That's Johnny, a skilled tracker. He asked me to use his shoulder and it was a good steady rest for the shot. That's what a hunting team does in the bush.

They weren't going for head shots, only boiler room (heart/lung zone) shots. Responsible hunters don't resort to head shots except at extremely close range, and then only to stop a charge from dangerous game.
