Do Cape Cod Metal Polishing Cloths remove micro-scratches from fine metal surfaces? I wanted to know the answer to that question too. Today I'm looking at how these Cape Cod Polishing Cloths work on stainless steel and sterling silver surfaces.

Hi JustBlueFish, Just finished watching the video and you were very detailed and descriptive. I would love to add my 2 cents, maybe it can add a perspective to this topic. How and why a polish would remove scratches is because how a polish works. It uses abrasion to remove layers of metal on the superficial layer. This is why it becomes shiny because it is exposing the layers underneath that had 0 contact with sulfides and oxides in the air. But removing layers of metal also means damaging the watch you are cleaning in the first place, removing enough layers to equalize to the point of removing the stretches is alot. People using this on Luxury watches such as a Patek or a Rolex will no longer have a "virgin" watch and will not have the fine edges. Polishes in general are bad for watches. I Personally use and recommend Coat & Shine jewelry Protector and Cleaner, which does not use abrasion, cleans all metals as well as using nanotechnology to create a protection layer that prevents the exposure to oxides keeping the watch shine lasting longer. I hope I helped other watch lovers.

@@truth-Hurts375I made the rookie mistake of using an abrasive polishing cloth to remove the scratches on my Seiko 5kx (brushed links) it was my 1st time ever attempting to polish a watch so I had no idea you should never use a polishing cloth on a brushed surface. I noticed after that the layers of metal had been removed from the abrasive effects of the polishing cloth and left it with the black lines underneath the layers of metal exposed so in the end I unwittingly ended up doing way more harm than good, I should've just left it alone. In the future I think I'll just avoid polishing cloths completely and use a non abrasive cleaner/spray/polish instead, or I might just avoid polishing completely to be on the safe side and just clean my watch regularly and never actually polish it and accept that it will get scratches on it given enough time. If I knew what I was doing a bit better I might attempt to remove the scratches but I don't want to make the same mistake again, as I fear I would somehow ruin the high polished links even using the polishing cloth in the right way (I want to buy a watch with high polished centre links as I've never owned one before), or I would somehow ruin the brushed links trying to remove the scratches even using the right type of non-polishing cloth on the brushed surfaces/links.

I found that the cape cod cloth does remove scratches but it’s all in how you use it . For example initially I rubbed the cloth on the watch case or bracelet and got the same results as Guy did . After time I realized that by laying the cape cod cloth on a flat surface and rubbing the watch on the cloth in one direction with some force that I got much better results and a perfect luster shine and removed the scratches as well. I just recently did this with a recent purchase of my Borealis Seahawk watch that I bought used from a friend that was a bit beat up and scratched. The watch looks brand new now . I also did this to the case and bracelet on my Padi Turtle 🐢 and same results looks brand new now 👍🏻

The point of Cape Cods cloths is the mild/fine polishing abrasive is on the cloth, along with tarnish remover. They are designed to rub the cloth on the surface needing polishing, or rubbing the watch case against the cloth. The point would be to rub the cloth harder, not to use a Dremel for the buffing stage. The Dremel is just polishing with the small amount of abrasive left behind by the cloth, whereas rubbing with the cloth does more polishing. It would be like merely wiping the car wax on your automobile, and then aggressively buffing it off, rather than rubbing on the car wax.

And usually removes from 1 to 2 microns... if you use a rotating machine you would get the scratches off and have a nice clean surface. The product is great ! The cleaning solution embedded in the cloth is what makes the difference. Just trying to help. It is what it is.🤓😎😉

The sachets are a very good choice, if you have only a small number of items that need to be polished. The author's idea of using plastic sandwich bags, is nice way to organize things when you put together your own polishing/cleaning kit as well.

I just happened to be polishing when your vid randomly appeared...there is a fine balance between removing scratches and using a similar process of scratching to achieve a smooth service... I have had great success using Meguiars plastic polish for the bulk of the work and for final metal polishes like Flitz or Autosol... with some elbow grease in conjunction with a Dremel and repeat applications, results are a very smooth surface with very little if any scratches...hope this may help

This subject is of great interest to me, i have a few stainless steel apple watches (hardly premium!) and come from an automotive painting background, we remove scratches quickly bu going through corse to very fine grade cutting compound ending in a final non abrasive polish, so was wondering if i start with a diamond paste designed for sapphire crystal (which i already have) and work my way up to this polishing cloth my logic tells me that this will not only be faster (with felt wheel and dremmel) I should remove much deeper scratches in the steel, right? Would i end up trashing the watch? Or am i missing a vital bit of information?

I don’t think that bracelet was ever a polished finished. It looks like a satin finish with those lines. To clean those up you gently use a scotch brite pad and go in the direction of the lines. But be careful. Thanks for the video, I like my Cape Cod Cloth for the polished parts of the watch and use scotchbrite pad for the bracelet and satin finish parts.

Holy shit, this cloth worked wonders cleaning up the bezel of my Hamilton Khaki Field Auto. I had amassed quite a bit of scratches already after 1 mo of constant wear and they were noticeable enough to bother me but this took care of 90% of what annoyed me. Only rubbed a minute or two. I was skeptical but it worked.

Depending on what you are after. It won't remove deeper scratches, but it's good to remove hairline scratches. The upside is that it removes only tiny bits of material. Some guys are really anal about removing too much material with polishing. This allows you to polish it ever so gradually until one is happy

@@JustBlueFish It happens a lot with avid watch collectors. We are so anal about hairline scratches, so much so that this polish is pretty good. A harsher compound would probably remove way more material than perhaps necessary

Good product with very good results - the watches and the ring were revitalized and looked really nice, albeit with some scratches remaining. The scratches add character to these items in my opinion. For an expensive vintage watch, I don't think it's a good idea to polish and buff to the point of removing all scratches anyway - it changes the character and the value of the watch. Good vid - thanks for posting.

The AVI-8 looks like it has a stainless steel bracelet and case. That's a very hard material and you need something that's harder, like carborundum (silicon carbide) to polish out scratches. It takes a little courage to take a piece of course carborundum sheet, that would tear up most surfaces, to a stainless steel item, but with most stainless alloys you just get a nicely polished surface.
