This is the first episode of my Cape Wrath Trail adventure in May 2023. I walked from Camusnagaul, across Loch Linnie from Fort William, to Morvich; a distance of 76 miles.
Along the ay I have brilliant sunshine, a lot of heavy rain, gear fails with my tent, my walking poles and my GPX device. A horrendous blister became infected and I had to stop at Morvich to allow the infection to clear. However, is was wild, wet, but great fun.

Excellent video Mac. You certainly did it justice. Watching it from a different perspective stirrs up so many memories and emotions. Good luck with part two. I can't wait to watch it. By the way, you can certainly chant a bit. Cracking voice. John.

I have watched many videos of the cape wrath trail, what i really liked about this one is the personal battle with the various trials and tribulations of the trail, the weather and the gear. I have thoroughly enjoyed this and i am really looking forward to the next video. Even with the singing 😂

It’s just watching as many videos as I can as I’m starting this in a month (July 2024). I’ve found yours one of the more helpful as you describe things really well and show the terrain for problems and the landscape for beauty. BUT I can’t find your part 2 video from last year!? Did you not make more? At 75 years I need all the help and advice I can get!

Thanks for the suggestion of a camp site by the "stones". The hair, you more got more than me, but I have it cut short. Technical question. I noticed the tekking pole was inside the tent resting on the ground sheet. Is this normal? Was this where the leak was? Did you identify what caused it?
@macinthewild8116
@macinthewild8116 7 ай бұрын
Hi , the groundsheet was made specially for the trip , it was not made by Durston but by an independent business. It’s tougher than the Durston and should have been waterproof. The poles have to sit on it due to the tent design but I think it was just the sheer volume of rain I had that Pushed through both layers of flooring. Thanks for watching 👍

Hi. Interested to hear what the issue turned out to be with the tenet footprint.. Was it a hole or just not up to the task? Looking forward to future parts 👍
@macinthewild8116
@macinthewild8116 Жыл бұрын
Hi, thanks for watching. I contacted the manufacturer and apparently one batch of tents made last year were not as waterproof as they should be! However, they released them. They have offered to replace the inner tent under warranty.
@CharlesDavidson-q1u

Was that the case for the bath tub and footprint? Am doing the CWT later this year and was undecided about a footprint due to weight but think I'll take it for that boggy ground.. Am taking a Hilleberg Anaris so will hopefully be up to the task but have only tested it a few times in the Lakes so far.. Busy taking notes from yours and others vids😁👍
@macinthewild8116
@macinthewild8116 Жыл бұрын
@@CharlesDavidson-q1u a footprint doesn’t necessarily mean additional waterproofing , it really just helps with protecting the bathtub floor. I think the material of the tent floor was not as water repellent as it should have been. A Hilleberg should easily be up to the task. 👍
@danielasturm4836
@danielasturm4836 Жыл бұрын
@@CharlesDavidson-q1u @Charles Davidson we took one of those window insulating wraps as a footprint and it worked so so well - which was totally unexpected. Got the tip from the ultralight crazies in the US. Duck brand do them but also others and it's also sold on e.g. Ultralight outdoor gear. It's basically just a thin film of plastic. We cut it to size and it weighed probably around 60 grams max as opposed to my tents actual footprint at nearly 400 grams. It really helped protect the tent floor against moisture and it even held up on really really prickly ground that I wouldn't want to put my tent straight on. At the very end it had a couple of small holes which we patched up with duck tape but it looks like it will hold up for a lot longer.

Incredible. And you still stay so positive even after your tent failed in the rain.i totally agree with you views on our abilities to solve problems naturally and without having access to help or internet.
