It's interesting to see your thoughts on what tools are necessary to build a paddle. I have built 17 of them so far, and oddly enough some tools you consider important, I don't use, even though I have them, and some tools I find essential, yet you don't mention 😅. My prefered padle toolkit have be a powerful bandsaw, but I don't have one, mor the space for one. The jigsaw is ok, but I actually prefer a circular saw to cut the front profile, finishing of the cuts with any sharp handsaw. The top profile I used to handsaw with a coarse rip-saw, thogh I have taken to the power planer for this task. My planer is of particularly heavy construction though, so freehand carving woth it like you show is out of the question. Either a scrub plane or a spokeshave does an excellent and quick job of roughing for me. The block plane does most of the fine work though. I also have a tiny block-plane, almost just a thumb plane which I find really handy as it's very nimble, and the short sole lends it self well to working on semi flat surfaces as well as close to the shoulders. I have a fine chissle collection, but never felt the urge to grab one while making a padle. Everything that's not easily shaped by a plane I do with a Sløyd knife. I also have a fine collection of calipers, but never thought to use one. None of my paddles have ever seen a bit of sandpaper. I prefer the smooth surface left by a propperly sharpened tool.

I am looking to built a very similar workbench. I was thinking of using a MDF top since MDF is heavier and cheaper. Why don't you recommend using it?
