bro took a beating that would kill a normal human being and shook it off like it was nothing and then proceed to use his whip to chuck a huge debris at capella with one arm. he's clearly somewhat of a superhuman in terms of durability and strength

Give it to the merchant that got transformed into a dragon, he did well trying to help out against Capella and helping the two escape even though they blinded him in one eye and almost killed him only moments before. He regained consciousness and rather than try and run, went immediately to attack Capella and help them escape. Badass normal. EDIT Turns out in the LN he was even worse injured, had one of his wings cut off and blasted out of the building, with Crusch confirming his body was down in the plaza. Despite that when he woke back up, he immediately scaled back up and into the building, blasted Capela with fire and ran with Subaru and Crusch in his claws. Damn if he wasn't a hero for a civilian with absolutely no idea what was happening and only half-working mental faculties.

Arc 1 (Pride vs Humility) - Subaru kept trying to fight the thugs on his own, thinking he was some kind of main character in this fantasy world, and failed miserably (Pride). In the final loop, he finally called for help (Humility), bringing Reinhard into the picture, who ultimately saved him and helped defeat Elsa in the loot house. Arc 2 (Wrath vs Patience) - Subaru was tortured by the very people he wanted to protect, hitting his lowest point. But instead of letting that break him, he chose to believe in the good he saw in others. He threw himself off the cliff to save Rem, the one who had murdered him. Arc 3 (Diligence vs Sloth) - After failing countless times, Subaru almost gave up and ran away (Sloth). But Rem, believing in the version of Subaru who would never give up, saved him-just like how Subaru believed in the kindhearted version of Rem when he jumped off the cliff in Arc 2. Because Rem had faith in him, Subaru chose to become that hero who never gives up (Diligence). Arc 4 - This episode marks Subaru’s fourth turning point, where he rejects Echidna’s contract and decides to stop using his Return by Death (RBD) ability, aiming to value himself more. I love how Re:Zero crafts Subaru’s character journey by placing him in extraordinary situations that, while not directly relatable, remain meaningful and impactful. This episode addresses the dilemma Subaru has faced since acquiring RBD: Should he keep looping to achieve a perfect future? It also tackles common criticisms of Subaru's actions by the audience: * Subaru should stop crying when people die since they’ll come back. * Subaru should keep looping and exploiting his ability since that’s the logical use of his power. * Subaru should get used to dying to avoid the emotional pain. In crafting a realistic and human story, Re:Zero rejects these typical expectations: Subaru will continue to cry when people die because he shouldn't view them as mere versions of people. Despite his encounters with the same individuals across different timelines, he will always see them as real people, not abstract concepts. He shouldn’t keep dying and neglect his own well-being. He needs to care for himself, as the people who care about him would be deeply hurt by his suffering if they knew about it. He shouldn’t become numb to dying and lose what makes him human. As I mentioned earlier, the story of Re:Zero deals with multiple aspects of death: the physical (pain and suffering), the mental (trauma and sanity), and the intangible (humanity and people). The author’s choice not to make Subaru rely on Return by Death (RBD) continuously is rooted in these themes. Unlike other shows where death is merely a physical event to overcome, Re:Zero explores death on a deeper level. The narrative reconciles these different aspects to deliver a meaningful message. Physically, death is depicted as immensely painful and endlessly traumatic, so Subaru should never become desensitized to it. Mentally, abusing RBD would lead Subaru to become a monster, overwhelmed by the power. Intangibly, maintaining his humanity is crucial; Subaru must treat himself as a person and not just a means to an end. He needs to value himself and not continuously inflict pain upon himself. Thus, the author’s approach to death in Re:Zero addresses more than just the physical aspect, unlike arguments suggesting that Subaru should keep using RBD to solve his problems, which typically apply to stories where death is treated purely as a physical challenge, ignoring its mental and intangible dimensions.
