Sporting legend David Tua knew his way around the boxing ring, in this episode of Celebrity Wheel of Fortune he loses his way around the English language and thus.. :)

I have only just read online that he said O for Olsen. Having seen it again, they are right. We've been taking the piss out of David all these years for no good reason.
@danieleyre89132 жыл бұрын
He still picked a vowel instead of a consonant.
@markdoherty7542 жыл бұрын
I agree it seems he said Olsen. Even if he had said awesome, isn't English his second language? I wonder how many who mocked him can speak and read after least two languages fluently?
@danieleyre89132 жыл бұрын
@@markdoherty754 Beyond English: I can read & speak Dutch, German, French, Spanish, Italian and Portuguese. I can also speak & understand spoken Russian to a degree (and can understand basic written Russian - it uses the Cyrillic alphabet). I know it’s not common among kiwis to know more than one lingo; but we’re an isolated nation that’s only recently gone beyond bicultural to multi-cultural. Yes English is not Tua’s first language. But vowels also exist in written Samoan. Tua can’t be too stupid given that he’s a former heavyweight contender and gatekeeper boxer. And he was clearly very nervous. But that was still pretty embarrassing how he named a vowel. Good on him for embracing it now with his number plate.
@markdoherty7542 жыл бұрын
@@danieleyre8913 aye carumba! Well done, I think learning other languages should be encouraged much more in this country for sure. I can't really blame Tua for picking a vowel by mistake though, I'm sure I'd do worse under pressure and English is my first and only language. Apart from a basic understanding of some Maori.
@danieleyre89132 жыл бұрын
@@markdoherty754 Yes I agree that more languages should be encouraged and I’d even support it being a compulsory part of the education curriculum. It gives you a much stronger awareness of your own English language and how it works (especially if it’s another indo-European lingo), broadens your mind, improves your logical deduction, improves your own articulation and vocabulary in English. And it should begin at primary school and could be any language (te Reo Māori would be a good candidate). Of course unfortunately most Kiwis never bother to learn another language and it’s benefits is beyond their comprehension zone so they’d think it’s a waste of time (but that sport somehow isn’t). As for Tua; I’d put the gaffe down to nervousness, he probably was aware of the rules.

David's wife and manager Robina Tua, who sets the record straight after 17 years. She says what David actually said was O For Olsen, as in Olsen Filipaina, the famous Kiwi league player and good friend of the Tua family. After some intense KZbin listening we wholeheartedly agree. But she did also say that O For Awesome being what it is now, they are happy to have it that way."

@mattybede14 жыл бұрын
The real joke isn't whether he said 'Olsen' or 'Awesome'. The real joke (for those who know the Wheel of Fortune rules) is that he asked for an 'O', and 'O' is a vowel. You need to buy vowels in Wheel of Fortune. Considering it was his first spin, hence no money, the joke is that he choose a vowel when he had no money. Someone probably didn't explain the rules to him.
