I don't know why no one mentions the audio difficulties in the beginning. He had to sing the song without the earpieces in that allow him to hear his voice over the PA. He also encourages the audience to sing to help cover the hearing problems. You can see the look of respect from the guitarist when he pick back in after the audience singing.

It can be very hard to hear yourself which can make you sing louder and even shout. Your voice can get tired and you might feel like you’re straining. If you use in-ears, you can have the sound engineer put only your voice and, let’s say, the keyboard in your ears. You won’t hear the screaming people at all! You can choose how much or little of each instrument you hear.
