When I was a teen, I copied an audio cassette of the Legnani caprices from my local public library. I probably still have it in the attic somewhere. Number VII was always one of my favorites.

Naxos recorded the etudes some time back and said in the liner notes that Legnani had managed to have the first guitars that had a sixth string (the lowest register) on them. Would 'strumming my five-string] have rolled off the tongue as easily? Guitar music as it is has never been the same since--but for the better because of him.
