Regarding the mail thing - you can have the post office hold your mail for up to 28 days, at which point they can either hold your mail for pickup or they can deliver it to your address. I also recommend signing up for informed delivery - the post office will email you scans of the mail (and occasionally package info) that your residence will receive for the day. If you don’t receive something, you can report it thru the email. P.S., tampering with another person’s mail is a felony in the US - whether you live with them or not.
