I agree with you they shouldn't have shortened the montage they shove extended it even further like to did the first act that way the conclusion be more satisfying and also instead of him crashing the ship for no reason how about he fights the Red Skull on top of the ship or when the Hydra Goons in the sky to take them down and then he falls which has him in the water for so long that he freezes and then when he wakes up he's found by Nick Fury

As it stands now, Captain America is easily the best trilogy of the MCU. The first film does an impressive origin story that lays down the fundamental character of Steve Rogers that truly shows that Cap is heart and soul of The Avengers. Chris Evans just nailed what the character has been in the comics for 75 plus years. The cast in this film is solid, I love the period piece. I love Steve and Peggy relationship. I enjoyed Red Skull he fit the mold of a typical villain for the style and period when bad guys were just simply that way. Also Bucky role is a prefect given how he becomes The Winter Solider in the sequel.

Same here, man. It just has so much heart. And it bleeds through the rest of the MCU so well. You leave this movie loving Steve. So when you Bucky returns it's hella emotional. Whenever Peggy returns and eventually dies it's heartbreaking. I can get behind a lot of characters in the MCU, but it just did so well to get you behind this guy. Also, Peg and Steve's relationship is just magic.

In my opinion, the Captain America trilogy is the strongest one in the entire MCU. These movies aren't just separately great and coherent, they're also that as a whole. To me, it's the trilogy that makes the most sense and that has the most logic and stability in its continuity while giving each movie its own identity. And that's what's so great about them, without even considering the fact that to me it has some of the strongest interpretations in the MCU. I also agree that the whole plane crashing thing was not so convincing. Now when it comes to this movie in particular, I agree with you on the first part of the movie, which is also the part I prefered. From all "individual" trilogies, I think Steve Rogers has the best developed origin story and that it's also one of the most interesting ones. Where I disagree is about the whole second part thing with the montage and the plot issues. The montage to me was no problem at all. As to the plot I think it was pretty well built. The whole thing makes sense to me and develops at a right pace I think. The Red Skull is indeed a villain just because he's a villain craving for power, but that's also who he is in the comics. And that's something I quite appreciated actually. I love a good complex character just as anyone, but comic books' characters can also be very black and white, especially in the early years. I recognized the Red Skull from the books and thought it was very well delivered by Hugo Weaving. This contributed a lot to make this movie a great comic book movie, in my humble opinion. Now as I said I loved the interpretations and to me Chris Evans is Steve Rogers, and I really can't picture anyone else playing him. I think you saying it's close to that and not as much as RDJ for Iron Man is that there has been no other Iron Man than Tony Stark. And RDJ excels at both. Now there have been quite a lot of Captain America, some very different from the one we have in the MCU. So saying that Evans is not THE Captain America like RDJ is THE Iron Man totally makes sense to me. But he is THE Steve Rogers, perhaps more than RDJ is Tony. Hayley Atwell also did a fantastic ob playing Peggy Carter and I strongly recommend you to watch the spin-off series around her character. It was beautifully written and once again, fantastic interpretations. I mean James D'Arcy is Jarvis at this point. Also I would have mentioned Sebastian Stan who did a pretty good job portraying Bucky here, and whose presence announces a lot for the MCU. So... that's pretty long. I didn't to write that much and though, I feel like I haven't said it all. I want to say though that I really liked your review, you did a wonderful job at it and your views are always interesting.

"The First Avenger" is my favorite entry from Phase One, and its definitely in my top ten from the MCU so far. I was also skeptical about Chris Evans' casting, having only seen him in "Fantastic Four" previously. He said in an interview for the movie, that Marvel originally wanted "a Chris Evans type" for the movie, but didn't approach him until after hundreds of others had auditioned. He also said the only hesitation he had, was signing a contract that would tie him up for at least the next ten years of his life. As for the montage part of the film, they didn't have much other choice since World War II lasted from 1939 to 1945. Steve's transformation happens in 1943, so you've got two years at most for the whole story to play out. He gets frozen because there was no internal heat on the Valkyrie, and the crash buries most of the craft in the ice. The opening prologue says that no one found it for almost 70 years because the weather constantly changed the terrain.
@SeanChandlerTalksAbout6 жыл бұрын
And I can understand the predicament they were in with WWII. But the montage seems to highlight the weakness of the red skull plotline as a whole. You can literally montage years of that story without skipping a beat!!!!! A montage isn’t horrible in and of itself. But when tied to a story I wasn’t engaged with, the montage highlights the problem with the story.

Agent Carter was a pretty good show. The only problem is it got cancelled and left off with a huge cliffhanger. If you want to get into it, you may want to stop after Season 1, because as far as I remember that doesn't leave you with a cliffhanger at all, so you can still enjoy it without having to deal with the cancellation issues.

Rewatching this movie for my MCU binge, I have to say it went above what I remember. The character of Steve Rodgers is so well established and is really the heart of the movie. So many quotable moments "Remain who you are, not a perfect soldier, but a good man." "I don't want to kill anyone, I don't like bullies. I don't care where they're from." "Ready to follow Captain America into the Jaws of death? No, that kid from Brooklyn who's too stupid to run away from a fight. That's who I'm following." "So do you two... Fondue?..." Hugo Weaving's portrayal of Red Skull really worked for me, the complete antithesis to Cap. He is the strong man who lost respect for the power. Just a solid movie with great characters and a solid story. 7.8/10

This is up there as one of my favourite Marvel films. And have to agree with most of what you say. In my younger days ( being that I’m English and not American ) I would scoff at the idea of a character wearing the American flag - it’s easy to perceive it as nothing more than a ‘ Self felating ‘ idea - now I have read comics for the better part of 30 years and generally prefer grounded stories - and when Ed Brubaker came onboard Cap for Marvel I picked it up and was blown away - I was so wrong. The character has a lot of depth to explore - and these films do that Justice. The man out of time scenario is something I live in itself - but to have a character with the morals he does and put him in the backdrop of the world we live in now ( as you said - a broken world. The film does have a middle act problem - and when I first saw it I was taken back abit that marvel Kind of got scared of the idea of having him actually fight Nazis ( that part of it all being glossed over in favour of hydra - which is also a threat to them and everyone. ) I can see where they were coming from in that they don’t want to offend anyone in any country with it ! I envisioned a Cap movie more set in the reality of Band of Brothers ( this was when it was first announced it would be a period piece. ) But I loved the end Product - the set designs , the Romanticism of the whole thing , his relationship with Peggy ! The Captain America trilogy is Marvels strongest trilogy overall and I think will remain that way for sometime I think. And yes - Agent Carter is worth watching and it’s a travesty it was cancelled when it was.

I love this movie and I switch back and forth between this and Winter Soldier as my favourite Captain America movie:) As to the montage part of the film, I can't see how they could have done that any differently really. Unless they just had him turning into Captain America, saving the soldiers and then immediately going to stop the Red Skull's plane ... but that would have felt unsatisfying to me. We know Cap has a long storied legend all through WW2 so for them to ignore that would have felt wrong, but the only other way to include it if they didn't do the montage would have been to do a whole new movie showing his adventures in the war, or adding 20 minutes maybe to the run time while they showed some of it, which of course they couldn't do (although I would LOVE to see that). Also I feel the Red Skull is underrated as a villain to be honest. At this point in Cap's story he is exactly as we see him here, a guy in charge of Hitlers top secret experimentation and research. I liked how you get to see him slowly increasing his power as he researches the Teseract through the movie until we reach a point of tipping. The good guys capture the Skulls lead scientist, he spills the beans so Cap has to go in now they know the Red Skulls ultimate plan is so close to being ready. It's not like they always knew what his plan was and had the entire movie to stop him but didn't

Captain America: The First Avenger is my favorite MCU movie so far. I love all the characters and their relationships with each other, I love the 30s and 40s pulp adventure/war aesthetic, I love Cap's origin story, and I love that the film was helmed by Joe Johnston, who's worked many times in that kind of genre before with The Rocketeer, Star Wars, etc. The lack of complexity with the Red Skull didn't bother me at all because along with Hugo Weaving portraying him, there was a fun flair and classic evil to the character, of him being obsessed with mythology and wanting to become like a god that I found rather satisfying, and was akin to the villains in old film serials and adventure movies, so I was totally fine with it (as opposed to Maleketh in Thor: The Dark World wanting to turn the whole universe black because reasons. And I like Thor: The Dark World okay.) The only real issues I had with Captain America: The First Avenger was that I wished it had dwelled in one of the missions set during the montage a little longer and the ending of getting Cap frozen so he could end up frozen, did feel a bit forced, although it was still emotionally effective because of the final conversation with Peggy.

It's so hard for me to rank these early Phase 1 movies because they all feel so similar to me and each of them has their ups and downs. The Avengers and Iron Man 1 are my favorites of Phase 1, but after that I'm not sure. The Incredible Hulk has great action seuences, but it kind of drags on at points. Iron Man 2 is very entertaining, but the plot is a bit of a mess. Thor is a good origin story but it's a bit generic. Captain America 1 has a fantastic first half and a weak second half. I feel kind of the same with all four of these movies. Once you get to Iron Man 3 and beyond, the films get a lot different as they take up different genres and take more risks (for better or worse), so they become easier to rank.

Actually I'm rather glad that the world twirls, cause we'd all be dead if it didn't. On a side note, I happen to really enjoy the word twirling twirling. Tee-hee

I thought this movie was just okay. I too like the inspirational theme in the beginning and I always laugh at that part where he jumps on the grenade and the others scowl. Other than that I thought it was imensely boring. Luckily The Winter Soldier and Civil War (my #2 and #3 favorite MCU movies) made up for the first one lol.

Agent Carter is an amazing show you will definitely like Jarvis and Peggy also the dark matter was interesting but unfortunately this show canceled on a huge cliffhanger we will never know anything about it and there was a lot of easter eggs in this show
