What most people new to Captain Beefheart might not understand or see is that when he and the band played their music live they played it all note for note. I had the good luck to witness this with the Doc At The Radar Station tour. THAT many members in the band playing as tight as a three piece. Amazing stuff. A good memory to take away.

I changed an entire group of friends lives forever when I brought this to BU. I'd been hitchhiking from Boston to S.Jersey and visited some friends in Philly when we all dropped acid and this album was put on. I was mesmerized from 1972 until now 2022. My best friend (RIP 2013, MM) and I used to speak in lyrics - almost 99 % Beefheart. A few years back, 2018?, my dog SnoopDogg, and I met a sweet guy in a local hot dog joint. We traded email Addy and I couldn’t believe my eyes, his "handle" was BeefheartFan. We've been friends ever since.

Beefheart's best album for the masses. The music is approachable by everyone and it doesn't ask you to like the stuff on "Trout Mask". He pulled off a real coup recording this album. Great vocals, rhythms, and a lead guitar that doesn't get in the way. Fantastic stuff

What a great album this is. I love all of Beefheart's albums from Stickley Personal to this one. Art Tripp's precise, tight drums and Roy Estrada's full, low bass add a lot to this album just as they did with The Mothers.

I first heard Beefheart around 1982 (Safe as Milk) and I hadn't really thought about "favourite albums" or anything until now, and I can honestly say this is probably the finest Album of Blues/Rock ever to come from your side of the pond. There are other Albums, other Artists that I love just as much, if not more, but as an example of genius, and how it truly transcends genre, this Album puts anything else I can think of right up the shady end of the street.

It's unfair, and very limiting, to say that this is a lesser album, because it's more "accessible". It's different than "Trout Mask Replica", or "Safe as Milk", both of which I love, and listen to often. But this is great stuff as well, and the discipline of tighter and shorter songs is not necessarily a bad thing.
@willynilly7269 жыл бұрын
Freddy Lubin You are right. The Magic Band was, without a doubt, one of the greatest bands of all time. The 3 albums you cite were just so fearless and innovative and different from each other. Trout Mask was incredible. Side 2, beginning with Pachuco Cadaver, made me a believer. Either you couldn't listen to it or you said "why aren't people listening to this?!???" Either you got Beefheart or you didn't. Thanks for posting Revantlation. I saw the Magic Band perform in Staten Island when Clear Spot was just released. "Peon" was performed. Truly a masterpiece.
@freddylubin9 жыл бұрын
***** I saw them around the same time, at the Tower theater in Philadelphia (well, actually Upper Darby). I remember how most people didn't get it. Even many who listened to him thought it was a joke. I realized how serious he is about what he was doing, and the years have only made that more clear.
@willynilly7269 жыл бұрын
Freddy Lubin Holy #$@@!! My ex was from Upper Darby! But, that makes sense. The greatest rock band in the world had to book venues outside of main metro areas because it couldn't draw big enough audiences. That's why they played in Staten Island and not in NYC. As it was, the old movie theater in Staten Island was only 3/4 filled. "Clear Spot" albums were raffle items. You and I saw the Magic Band at its best with Rockette Morton, Zoot Horn Rollo and Drumbo. Later personnel were great, but they were the core. You're right. The more you listened the more you understood. Most people thought they were out of control. It was just the opposite! Zoot Horn wrote that Charlie Mingus and Ornette Coleman attended a performance. That's how good the band was. Thanks!
@freddylubin9 жыл бұрын
***** I've been out of Philly, and out of the US, for 42 years, but I know that the Tower is still there. One of the few old-style movie theaters around.

Freddy Lubin AGREED! This is a terrific Beefheart LP. If only most musicians could make their music accessible, interesting and creative at the same time. The juxtaposition of songs and the "wiggy" rhythms are incomparable! And, what a Blues Voice the Captain had.
@MrZaqqa8 жыл бұрын
The drummer herein is Artie with the green mustache Tripp(here knowed as Ed Marimba) he formerly of Zappa's Mothers of Invention band. The lead guitar on the tune 'Alice In Blunderland' is another alumni from that great Zappa band called Winged Eel Fingerling(known to his mama as Elliot Ingber.) In them days, musicians frequently zig zagged between both the Mothers and Beefheart's ownne Magic Band. Tho Ian Robertson Underwood - amazingly enuff - could NOT cut it in the Beefheart group saying the musique gave gimme a headache.

This is a very strong album of more commercially viable songs. Trout Mask sets the bar for eclectic weirdness and anti-commercial brilliance. Clear Spot is much easier to love for a more mainstream audience.
@timberwrightsvs4808 жыл бұрын
Very well put, Freddy Lubin. It shouldn't be mandatory to be seeing triple before spinning an album. Templeman was clearly steering Don van V a different direction with this album, but is trying to take an artist out of the dark fringes of obscurity such a bad thing? Some hard core Captain Beefheart fans might not like the decipherable lyrics, but I think some of this stuff really stands up. The Captain and his buddy, Frank Z, weren't accessible to me as a kid in the earliest days of FM -- because they didn't give either artist any air play -- but I would've loved to have heard "Clear Spot" before or after other Templeman-produced songs of the time -- i..e., "Listen to the Music" and "Rockin' Down the Highway." FM program directors are truly the bane of any music lover's existence.

Don Van Vliet is somewhat of an anomaly among musicians. What I understand is he has no real knowledge of music theory but yet he's an accomplished harmonica player. Listen to him playing chromatic harmonica along with the guitar lines on "Click Clack and "Grow Fins" from his album "The Spotlight Kid". He may not be educated in music or know how to play a soprano sax properly, but there's no denying his brilliance as a self taught musician. Some of the greatest musicians learned to play without formal training. I'm a musician/composer and studied music theory in college and I have hired musicians to play my music and some can't play without a score. Some musicians are the opposite of the approach Don Van Vliet took. I've always wondered if his music would not be as interesting if he was formally trained. From interviews with past Magic Band members, they imply that Van Vliet didn't write all the music as he claims, and I believe this is true. But his music would not exist if he wasn't there to lead his band, so it doesn't matter if he didn't write all the notes to "Hair Pie" for example. I certainly think John "Drumbo" French should be praised for his effort in the making of Trout Mask Replica, yet he isn't even credited on the album. Out of spite, I think Don Van Vliet left his name out because they got into a fight and French quit the band before the album cover was designed. Thanks for reading this long post. Cheers
