The hull of the Axopar is really not designed for this kind of conditions. It is made for the archipelago of Scandinavia. The hull is perfect there. Typically, Scandinavians take their boat to a small island, anchor up with the bow towards the rock. A low freeboard makes perfect sense then, making it easier enter and leave your boat. Look at any scandinavian boat maker, it will have an opening in the pulpit at the front.

Wrong, that Axopar can handle quite a bit. The suntop version isn't designed to be a dry ride. Water washes in and self bilges straight out of that design. You should review the model more before making silly remarks
@andreasdassen
@andreasdassen Жыл бұрын
@@KieranCox I used to own an Axopar with a pilot house. Off course you are right that it is open in the aft, I had a snake swim in there once, but that doesn't change that the boat is not made for tidal waves like this. If you want a good finnish hull for conditions like that, you buy a Botnia Targa.

I think that Axopar and those newer, backward raked bows, have borrowed from the Thunderchild and Thunderchild 2 as seen in Frank Kowalski's channel (by the same name). Where the difference is (and it's critical) is that the Thunderchild is completely sealed and self-righting...these aren't.

After watching quite a few of these videos (both here and other channels), one thing strikes me that seems common to all the situations shown. All along the Intracoastal Waterway there are many passages to open water making it relatively easy for people with what are essentially "inland water boats" to access open water. They are unprepared, unknowledgeable, and poorly (if ever) trained for the hazards involved and so they get themselves in trouble over and over again. Marinas and Ports that are actually ON open water will be full of boats that are properly designed (and captained) for open water. Here all we see are "credit card" and "bank account" captains putting themselves, their friends and families, and ultimately, emergency aid crews into unnecessary danger. But "hey", they're getting the attention they love; just look at the gesturing and posturing at the cameras that goes on.
@pinetree2473
@pinetree2473 Жыл бұрын
I'd say some of that is certainly true, but how do unprepared people BECOME prepared and knowledgeable? It is through experience. I've been through it, though years ago with a 21.5' center console w/ a 150hp. outboard scuba diving from MA to ME. Even one 'slightly' close call can teach captains an awful lot that classroom or lecture won't teach nearly as well. People need to be able to gain their own experience.

Drone shots are great... They allow the viewer two views of the stuffings. The captain who left the helm should have been wearing pfd and thought twice before leaving the helm. Hull designs are good for slicing through most breaks...but most of those smaller vessels were outmatched by an angry Haulover. I will take a ride on the "Therapy IV" over the others... That hull design was built for Haulover's mood swings.😉🌊🌊🌊

Aoxopar hull design is not to my liking , along with all the other blunt nose euro designs . You may notice a more flared bow on charter boats , maybe a bit more experience on the water ? Along with all the lake boats and pontoon boats , why would you even think about taking them out the inlet ? I do not think I have seen one skipper using the factory supplied kill lanyard . Over my years on the water I have seen so many skippers in the water with a run away boat circling them . Several times we threw an extra bow line or anchor line in the boats path to tangle up in the prop . And even on some of the larger open boats I wish people would at least wear a self inflating life vest on rough days . Former rescue diver here in the Northwest .

The backwards raked bow is meant to pierce the waves and avoiding the slowing effect specially if you go downwave in big swell. Very successfull in fast racing sailing and poweryachts. But difinitly needs then to take the waves over the bow, and not being open or even a bowrider, that defeats the purpose.

The second so called Axopar wasnt an Axopar infact!! It was a Swedish Nimbus T-11. There are many Scandinavian boat designers who design their boats with these cutting hulls. Almost all these manufacturers are saying that their boats are designed for heavy seas and their countries ship building industries are among the bests in the world for centuries. I believe this is the "different" behavior of this kind of hull design which is confusing the captains who are unfamiliar with these boats.
