@@Mr_Sovik The Enterprise's port and starboard phaser banks are directly mentioned in _Balance of Terror._ The aft phaser was mentioned in _Arena._ All of them are mentioned together in _The Paradise Syndrome,_ as phaser banks 1 thru 4. All in dialogue: none were seen firing due to budget limitations. The _Booklet of General Plans: USS Constitution Class_ shows the actual location of the phaser banks. *That book is absolute canon:* it is the original source of the canonical 'Constitution Class' designation (which was never said onscreen), and is the only officially endorsed blueprint for the Constitution Class that exists.

The Constitutions didn't have phaser arrays, but rather phaser banks, which is why their firing arcs are so limited. Same with the Excelsior. Not sure what AI Sulu was doing - lots of time in places between shots. Excelsior should dominate a fight against a pre-refit Constitution...

When we saw the TOS Defiant in Enterprise (In A Mirror Darkly), she had aft torpedoes as well as phasers. I think that they should have added that to the Enterprise. I THINK the Defiant in Enterprise had phasers on the dorsal saucer and not just their ventral side. I could be wrong though...I'd have to watch that episode again. It's cool the Excelsior is the NX version of the ship. I love that version of the ship. I know the NCC is nearly identical but some things were changed. The bridge, the impulse crystal, and the observation deck for the shuttlebay. I mean that's on top of the secondary hull sitting just forward of that alcove. We know that Sulu took command of the NCC version. I'm surprised the TOS Enterprise won. With the tech gap between the two the Excelsior should have won easily.

You could win every time by staying inside of the Excelsior's torpedo envelope, which, because of how long the ship is, is rather roomy. They could never destroy you with phasers alone.

If you see that Lil bulb just above the hanger doors on the secondary hull. That's the rear phaser emitter. Whoever designed that didn't add it in as it should have.

That blue part on the bottom of the excelsior isnt the shuttle bay.. the shuttle bay is in the same spot as the connie.. look at it closer

6:27 Is that a shuttlebay? I know the clamshell deal at the end of the secondary hull is a shuttlebay (and I want to say the two ports on the neck are bays for worker bees), but I'm not sure the open area on the bottom is another bay.

I guess I was figuring it was a dedicated cargo bay (IIRC, the Galaxy class has cargo bays in that part of its secondary hull, so I just figured that design feature started with the Excelsior).

This is one of the reasons why I like the original TOS enterprise vs the refit. It can really hold its own against a ship more advanced than it. Meanwhile the refit can barley take a hit from a MIRANDA without half of it blowing up. Even the NX-01 couldn’t take that much of a beating, so it really highlights just how robust the original constitution class could be.

Honestly I always imagined the constitution class refit as a semi failure as it didn’t really last too terribly long in service since the excelsior class came along very soon after. While the original constitution class went through a lot and kept going for a good long time. The refit is a good ship, but the original is the BEST ship.

The similarities between Excelsior and Discovery are probably because they both took inspiration from the unused phase 2 design for the Enterprise.
