Captain Lee, Kate, and Ashton reunite as a team and embark on an exciting new season in Thailand on mega yacht “Valor.” After his brush with death last season and promotion to bosun, Ashton’s work hard, play harder persona is at an all-time high. Susan Matteo Great comment. I totally agree he should be fired. I honestly think what Kate said about his mother had nothing to do with it. He felt rejected and frustrated that she didn’t succumb to his advances. To add insult to his injuries Kate pointed out his unwelcome advances and her lack of consent. Following that she could have said water was wet and he’d have attacked her. He lost it and in that moment not one of the other guys there can say they weren’t afraid for her. That’s enough to get him fired. I’m stunned that he hasn’t issued the most grovelling apology to her. His lack of self awareness and continued excuses just makes him seem more dangerous.

I think people somehow forget that Kate has more stripes than anyone else on the boat, besides the chef (they are of roughly equal rank) or the captain. Her rank alone entitles her to more respect, not to mention her seniority and experience. That's how it works on boats - like a mini Navy. There are plenty of men in high-ranking positions who are rude to and abuse their employees, surely way worse than Kate does. As Captain Lee is always saying, "You don't have to like me personally, but you WILL respect the rank." That's just the way it is. I actually think Kate has been easier on her stews, and the rest of the crew, this season than in years past.

Thanks guys. 😊 The extension of that being, if Kate were a man, these deckhands (or 'dickhands' as Aesha from BD Med would say, which somehow seems more appropriate!) would NEVER dare talk down to her and insult her the way they do. Even on nights out, Ashton (until he gets blackout drunk, at least) is always saying things like "I am her superior" (usually about Rhylee) and "I'm the team leader," showing that rank and respect for it are very important to him, and that he feels they should be observed even during off hours. And yet, it's at precisely those times that Ashton usually chooses to yell at, argue with, and swear at Kate, and oh yeah, I almost forgot - try to kiss her repeatedly when she's made it abundantly clear she's not interested. This is bad enough, but the other guys on the boat take their cues from him. After all, if he can do it, then it's OK for these one-stripers to do it too, right? If any one of these fools were to call Captain Lee an inflammatory name to his face during a drunken night out, you'd better believe there would be a Come-to-Jesus meeting in the morning. Kate generally doesn't do this sort of morning-after reality check, except sometimes with her stews, and even that usually has to do with job performance, not day-off hijinks. She just is noticeably cooler to the offending employee the next day - perhaps throwing one or two of her trademark scathing remarks their way - and then they wonder why SHE's being a b****, not realizing or accepting that the problem might lie in their own prior behavior, and they call her one behind her back. Once this behavior has started, it only builds as everyone involved feels safer and safer with piling on her. Simply because she's a woman, they feel like it's okay to step across these boundaries they'd likely never cross with a male superior - not without fear of being reprimanded or dismissed, anyway. And it's not cool. I don't like pulling the feminist card, but it's blatantly obvious that's what's going on in this situation. Kate deserves all their respect - and respect is a two-way street.

Kate only did it to shut him up, because she didn't want to discuss it any further with him. She didn't *really* accept his apology, I don't think, and I don't blame her. When she realized he didn't even remember what had happened, I doubt she was in the mood to re-hash and explain to him what had actually transpired, so she took the quickest possible route to ending the conversation so she could get away from him and get on with the work at hand, which is very typical of Kate's behavior anyway. She knew the video footage would vindicate her in the end. I doubt Ashton's reputation will ever recover from this episode ... and nor should it.
