Defenders could be programmed better (i.e., reinforce a faltering line of defence). A battle formation such as this needs fluid backup.

Why does it seem like when those that defend are easily taken out vs when they go on attack ...is it a stats thing

Sometimes they do worse when they go on attack because they fan out and their lines become too thin.
