Antoine BUSNOIS (also Busnoys) 1430 - 1492 a French composer and poet of the early Renaissance Burgundian School. While also noted as a composer of motets and other sacred music, he was one of the most renowned 15th-century composers of secular chansons. He was the leading figure of the late Burgundian school after the death of Guillaume Dufay. … he was not entirely a man of peace is indicated by a petition for absolution he filed in Tours, dated 28 February 1461, in which he admitted to being part of a group that beat up a priest "to the point of bloodshed", not once but five times … While in a state of anathema he was foolhardy enough to celebrate Mass although he was not an ordained priest, an act which got him excommunicated until Pope Pius II pardoned him. … WIKI

@Proclus I have some questions about this Antoine Busnois guy: 1. Did he ever get married or have children? 2. What was the cause of his death? 3. Who were his parents? 4. Is this video an actual recording of the song In Hydraulis from when Antoine Busnois was alive? 5. Did he join the French military as a knight? 6. Did he ever speak English?

I already translated this for my fantasy verse play _Tilda_. The heroine Tilda and her parents have escaped the revenge of a cruel landlord and, on the run, have fallen in with a band of strolling players. Their performance at an inn is not going well, and desperate measures are needed. ... RADIO [ a player]: Tilda, my dear, Sit beside me and listen carefully: I’ll teach thee a song will knock their little socks off. (Sings) In hydraulis quondam Pythagora Admirante melos, phthongitates Malleorum, secutus aequora Per ponderum inaequalitates Adinvenit musae qualitates. Epitritum ac emioliam, Epogdoi duplam perducunt. Nam tessaron pente convenientiam Nec non phthongum et pason adducunt, Monocordi dum genus conducunt. - Can ye remember that? TILDA: Why, certainly. (She sings the whole song herself.) JESS [Tilda's mother]: Ah, that were lovely, Tilda my little pet, Though I did understand no word of it. RADIO: ’Tis the Latin tongue - that always goes down well: They cannot boo it, for it might be holy. The meaning’s thus: When, at the water organ Pythagoras did wonder at the tunes And thought upon the notes made by the hammers, Seeking equality, through inequalities He thus discovered the virtues of the muse. One and a third, and then one and a half, And then one and an eighth lead to the double. For thus the fourth and fifth comply together, The note also, and the whole span of notes, When they are used in the monochord kind. TILDA: I see: ’Tis most enlightening. RADIO: Truly, it will slay them.

Is this French language?
@RalphHancock3 жыл бұрын
No, it's Latin, full of ancient mathematical and musical terms. It's meant to be impressively difficult, and it's very hard to understand even for a classical scholar. You can tell that it was written by a French speaker because the final -s of 'Pythagoras' is not pronounced, and the word rhymes with 'aequora'.

I like Pomerium, but they are a little too gentile for Busnois/Busnoys. The best version of this piece of music, by far, is performed by the Clerk’s Group. Unfortunately, it is to be found nowhere on KZbin and, in fact, you can now only get a used copy of it on CD (at this time of writing).
