A lot of what you see on your ZINC anodes is ZINC OXIDE. The zinc is supposed to corrode, as part of a chemical reaction called electrolysis. Because the zinc is attached to the metal of your engine, it corrodes instead of the aluminum and steel of your engine. So something like CLR or Lime Rid will remove the crusty stuff (zinc oxide), which is essentially rusted zinc. Salts Gone doesn’t remove rusted zinc.
@fishhunt9874
@fishhunt9874 Жыл бұрын
What I have found that works is removing the thermostat and pouring a few gallons of of very hot, not boiling water down through housing. The salt dissolves fairly quickly. I have not inspected anodes after doing so but at my last 100hour service all of my internal anodes were in good shape.

good tip, wasn't that difficult. I just didn't want to destroy them. because I didn't have any new ones, just tested and refurbished, hahahaha
@58dorsett
@58dorsett Жыл бұрын
What a lot of these,(salt away) tests are confusing is actual salt with aluminum oxide deposits. If you take a handful of rock salt and drop it in a bucket of water it will dissolve without the addition of any other chemicals, however aluminum oxide, which resembles salt, dry white powdery substance, is the product of aluminum metal of the engine reacting with the saltwater will not dissolve in water. So the claim that the flush solution removes salt may be perfectly true, but it will not be able to affect the oxide corrosion. that's why most engines have anodes which should be maintained, and routinely cleaned so they will corrode instead of the water jackets, and heads.

TEST IS.......''DIDN'T DO ANYTHING!''
@rickgalat3162
@rickgalat3162 2 жыл бұрын
@@CaptDavesSportfishing Blondestrainger is absolutely correct. The less noble zinc anodes are there to protect your aluminum block from galvanic corrosion by giving up their electrons to protect the aluminum which causes the zincs to oxidize. The white salt like powder that you're seeing is zinc OXIDE and NOT salt, that is why your salt away test does nothing. You need to correct your misleading conclusion of your experiment. Please try repeating the experiment with table or sea salt in the same salt away solution and see what happens.

Friend ran a hiway maintenance district in Missouri, where they use salt and brime on the roads. They use a salt neutralizer on all the equipment after every snow/ice event. Says it makes 100% difference in the corrosion of metal compared to years before when it wasn't available Myself, I don't use a barrel. Figure what the water flushes out of the motor is just going back through it over and over. I've a 100 foot hose-black-I leave in the Florida sun. The water can get hotter than a house waterheater produces. Using 'muffs' I run that through then allow cold to flush behind it. If the discharge water runs off the drive into the grass, it dies.

Lots of good comments here. First, you need to identify the exact composition of the encrustation. If it's not salt, the salt-remover may be ineffective. If it's calcium, then other removers will be needed. If it's metallic oxides, a different cleaner, etc. You need to follow established laboratory procedures to really give a product a valid test. I mean, what if it's fish snot? Salt remover is no good for that.

I don't believe that's actually salt. There's always the "taste test" to be sure, but I don't recommend it after running the West Marine chemicals in there. The sacrificial anodes on my home and RV water heaters are always caked up with white gunk just like that even though there is no salt water going through them. According to "the internet" that white stuff is calcium or calcium carbonate, which Rydlyme is made to dissolve (water scale, limescale, calcium and rust). So does the West Marine Salt Off work? Who knows, but if you say the inside of your engine is clean, then perhaps it is, but it is ineffective on scale.

None of the salt removal products work as advertised. Flush your engine with fresh water each time you use it and change your anodes every year. Applying caustic liquids inside the engine could damage seals and o-rings.

people with yachts have softened water machines, all that stuff too. it worked inside my back hatch where salt air gets trapped over time and salty ''dust'' accumulates. Thats all it was good for. worked well when I washed that area with it............but removing ''deposits''? not!

But, that's not salt. Sodium Chloride, NaCl... regular H2O removes Sodium Chloride! What is being talked about here is NOT salt from salt water. It is not sodium chloride, but an oxide of other sources. What does the bottle say? Removes NaCl or is other other chemical "salts"? This is what needs to be detemined.

YEPPER......salt remover UN officially debunked. a whole hour of pumping thru motor and anodes are still caked with salt? NOT GOOD. It did work fine in my back compartment of boat where salt ''dusting'' accumulates. Thats the real reason I even tried it. RYDLYME EATS UP ''DEPOSITS', end of story.'

Not sure the test really accomplishes much. First, the product says not to place items in the concentrate, but to mix it with water first. This is important because the product, when mixed with water, may have different chemical properties. As such, using it in concentrated form is not a valid experiment. Second, every good experiment needs a control. In this case, submersing two other anodes in cold water and warm water, potentially with a third in the lime product, would provide a means to actually measure if the Salt Off is any better than basic options. Finally, that product is an irritant to both skin and eyes; I recommend safeguarding your own health by handling it with gloves or a tool. Hope this helps.

You're not using SaltAway (Salts Gone, West Marine Brand, Salt Off) properly. The product is intended to be used to flush your engine after use, it is not designed to descale. The SaltAway's, when used every trip, are designed to clean out and keep out salt build up. If you have buildup, then the solution is to use a descaling product (Rydlyme, Barnacle Buster) to descale or pull the heads and mechanically clean the water passages. In other words - use SaltAway type of product every time and then you won't have a need for descaling.

I know all about descaling and engine maintenance, and have hundreds of videos about the subjects. If it won't take off any simple salt build up then it's wasted $$. Oh, spend, spend huh? From day one? My motor doesn't need descaling. It's all a way to suck $ out of your pocket.

just scale and salt. it will effect anodes. I take them all out. all interior anodes will have 'build up' since they are sticking into the motor. and I proved the saltaway did zero to any salt accumulation. my motor is squeeky clean inside because warm water in a barrel is a certain way to get rid of salt. and it cheaper. if I used saltaway after each trip, I'd need 55 gallon barrels of it monthly..

Any salt away product is developed to rinse salt out. It's not designed to get rid of any build-up. Use it on an engine that is new religiously, and you won't get a build-up.
