My favorite fact about capturing is that Candace from Fates has a completely unique body type. It's called Candace. Since she is the only fat character that you are able to recruit, they did not bother making any other models for her body type. But presumably not to send an unintended message by having her magically transform into a skinny person, the game prevents her from being reclassed. At all. She can only ever be an Adventurer. And since she's a Birthright boss, she doesn't have any fun skills. So she gets the Outlaw and Adventurer skills and that's it forever unless you use the DLC skill books. (If you forcibly reclass her with a save editor, she keeps her Adventurer model.) So, indirectly and hopefully unintentionally, because she's fat, she's pretty much the worst character in the game. If there's a silver lining, her default outfit is pretty cool.

The Four Horsemen of Conquest captuables for me: Haitaka, who has close to 50% personal growths in Strenght, Skill, Speed, and Defense iirc, along with the Rally Defense support to boot. Kumagera fir having good mixed bulk and excellent player phase offense. Gazzak, who has some of the craziest bases in the game, and is usually the real unit I'm there to get in Forrest's paralogue. And of course, Rallyman, who has such insane rally support uitility compressed into a single unit that is almost impossible to replicate without extensive planning for a child unit to replicate.

Kumagera is so good cuz not only does he have great mixed bulk and offenses, but on hard mode, he comes with Countermagic and Certain Blow, meaning you could grab counter and Death Blow along the way and basically be either a one-shot queen or obliterate foes on the EP.

Kaga did actually bring capture back in his second game after he left, Berwick saga, In it you had to inflict a status called cripple on the enemy which renders them unable to attack and reduces their movement greatly, there were different ways to get an enemy to be crippled though it can be a little on the RNG side but the save system makes it very possible, then after being captured you take all their items, gain a lot of exp and lastly they show up in the prison in the town where you can exchange them back to the enemy for money ( the higher the rank of the soldiers the more money you get on release, bandits for example didn't have any one to pay the bail money), even some character and story moments are tied to the mechanic, I highly recommend the game.

Reminds me of the haitaka being the hard carry for the conquest past as he gives such a good rally skill on top of balance your team with a hoshido class. Also love the fact we could capture a regular lancer unit as I always wanted to play with one or get one as a playable member. It's overall a fun time to go and get the capture bosses and buff them up with all the dlc skills and classes then update them to have a full list of broken captured bosses you can buy for playthroughs

I think we also have Fate's art direction to thank for making capturing enemies so appealing. So many designs are just so amazing! The first time I saw the generic Soldier with that smug little grin, I knew I needed to capture one and bring him with us to the end!

Hoshido: how could you betray us? Haitaka:they were very persuasive(eating some fruit) But in all honesty fe has the same problem as pokemom where they have fantastic systems they throw away next gen. The capture and amiboo system was incredible. Meanwhile awakening had this as well with special units but you could get Marth and tiki as a bonus class and dragon with easy galeforth Fates remake would be great to clean up the translation and give these bosses a cool side quest to get them but I'd be fine with them just being general support as well to be more unique. Personal skills. Hard to say. The two buff bros could get a boost in atk and def if they are next to one another or linked. Haitaka when using rally he gains a stat boost or something special as he's the hype man. Candice a item finder skill and so on. It's honestly why i can't be as mad towards fates as most. Ir just had good gameplay and systems

The MyCastle rng stuff is the single stain on Conquest’s gameplay 😭 Thankfully you can just hack infinite resources in if on emulator, or abuse spotpass on the 3DS to bypass the recruitment rng of captured units, but it’s still lame.

I wouldn't say the Fates writing problem is just the translation. It's an incredible game gameplay wise. But even in JP it's kinda written like a Shonen Manga that gets publicized for less than a year.

@@1stCallipostle yeah the gameplay is basically a top tier system as while awakening was a big step up it can be easy to break while fates retooling it once you get used to it can be extremely fun. Especially how the amiboo and capturing system works too. Well with any and all route games you basically have to come up with quick stories for each. 3 houses meanwhile is looping many story beats for the first half making it all samey while the second half is pretty generic to one another aside a few maps. Fates did it much better but could have used some proper edits Funny enough nobody talks about the actual good add ons the English version had with having the kings vow to be good for the people and some reasons as to why garon was able to get corrin. The og story somehow two leaders of these massive countries just showed up and same on reverse to taking azura later on

I love capture. It expands on your cast by giving you some bonus units that basically feel like hidden characters. Fe fates while the localization is one of the worst things to happen (next to the dlc not being released) the amiboo system and the capture system are some of the best inclusions Fe ever did. Same with some of the maps and stages

@@shadowsableyexd2660 I think multiple characters and dialogues were severely changed from the original version to the localized ones, namely Hisame going from being very old fashioned and traditional to simply liking pickles, and also the c support between Saizo and Beruka being completely removed for simple "..." wich while funny is kind of a shame. Edit : well I am looking more into it atm and it seems like there have been multiple heavy rewrites of quite a few supports, seemingly to make them more "goofy" or something but taking out quite a lot of characterization

The fortune teller being a zoomer joke before it was cool. And how these people are somehow also lazy to not give us the last dlcs. Course it sounds like you ignore that to get your point across trying to cover for these people as they were both badly written and lazy while trying to "make it understandable for overseas" when that's the issue. Engage is just a badly written story even without localization and it's funny both came after awakening that saved fire emblem and 3 houses Though if you want some positives on what they changed. I know a few like trying to fix how sumeragi got dropped and the leaders being better to their people in revelation as those were localization changes.

I had an idea for a unit type specificilly designed to capture enemies. Kidnappers are a promotion for thieves/bandit units and come with the capture command baked in. When initiating capture you can only attack once and instead of reducing HP to 0 you have to reduce HP to 7 or lower without hitting 0. If successful, then a second "attack" will be performed, binding the target. Said target then can be "traded" with, carried around or simply left as an obstacle for other enemy units with enemy AI programmed to unbind their unlucky comrade.

I loved the capture mechanic in fates and I made excellent use of it in the short time I spent in both routes. (Birthright desperately needed a tanky unit and Conquest had fun boss foes to capture) My only gripe is that the capture abilities took up the personal skill. Meaning that if you wanted to capture units you NEEDED these 2 specific characters, and if you didn’t like them, well tough. Granted… Niles is good enough. He’s always a unit I put effort in as his stats are immediately usable when you get him and he only gets better. Orochi… exists I guess? Once Sakura promotes (which isn’t hard btw) she’s an INFINITELY better Omniyogi than Orochi is, immediately shedding res weak foes with the bloody RAT SPELL.

9:20 the capable bosses having personal skills is something that I do wish we had, I was thinking about if generic enemies could have personal skills similar to how bonded units in fates did Like, maybe you’re not gonna get Sol on any capture, but hey Str +2 isn’t too bad for physical capture! Maybe they could “hide” the personal skills until after you capture them, like how you could only see their names in the prison in fates, heck maybe you COULD get someone with Sol as a personal, but only after a certain chapter checkpoint and then they’ll start being available! It was funny when you said to not let them out shine the named cast, because I was thinking generics, but then I remembered for something like engage. the generics only lose a personal skill, and really a good few of engages personals are kind of bad so that’s not really a loss 💀 Still Fates’s mechanics or something I really hope to see again, from the capture system, the bond units, heck I wanna see the Einherjar units make a return! Fortunately, several custom campaigns exist with Thracia Capture - two very prominent and well-regarded ones in particular, in Bells of Byelen and A Vestrian Tale - and while I don't intend to shill, I'd be remiss if I didn't mention that boss recruitment is a core mechanic in Drums of War (though it doesn't come through Capture, more through a series of Shiro-like choices). If you want to see something come back, chances are, someone else has also wanted that, too, and put it into action.

What if stealing captured enemy’s weapons only gave you the resale value in gold rather than the weapon itself? That seems like a pretty reasonable compromise between not giving the player access to ridiculously early endgame weapons (like Spears or Tomahawks on early-to-mid game enemies) but still getting a ton of value for capturing.

I don't think I ever actually used Capture even once in Fates. When I played Thracia 776 last year the Capture mechanic was absolutely essential, as many have said. I'm glad I did my due diligence on T776 and got input from others before playing it. If I hadn't I definitely wouldn't have made it through the game. Stealing a bunch of Warp and Rewarp staves literally saved my army on more than one occasion. If they do bring back the Capture mechanic in a future game, I'd like to see it somewhere in the middle of the Thracia 776 and Fates versions. Don't make Capture absolutely mandatory to make it through the game. But it shouldn't be totally optional either. A happy medium somewhere in between would be nice to see.

I recently did a video on which I spoke that the return of the capture mechanic is long overdue. The thracia one is good and interesting tying it to storyline elements, but it needs a bit more streamlining in the amount of actions needed to confirm the action. Capture/trade/take/drop is just too many buttons. There could be a more effective system and fates does it pretty well. But maybe the same fates system but with a roll for an item from the individual instead is a better option.

In Thracia you can kinda manipulate the AI with this system; because they tend to prioritize capturing to attacking, you can leave a unit unequipped to bait the enemy into capturing them, thus sparing your other units from being attacked that turn, and make their stats worse. It's how I was able to talk to and beat Reinhardt on that map. My friend really loves the capture system in Fates, he did a whole playthrough with captured randos lol

It was so perfect for Thracia because you really are a ragtag underdog army struggling for survival, and capturing was your primary way of getting weapons, and by extension, money (by selling the items). For it to come back in a way that makes sense, IS would have to shake up the formula they currently seem married to, which is that you’re an official army operating in the open and with the supporter of the populace and nobility. Also a detail that I love is that Thracia has many seemingly-redundant weapons that are just strictly worse versions of other available weapons, because sometimes that stuff is the only crap you can get off enemies at the moment, so you’ll actually use terrible weapons sometimes. In the rest of the series the only real reason to “downgrade” weapons is either to save durability, or be less weighed down.

We already have a multitude of these systems in the game with green units being taken in sacred stones to protect them. The protect the red unit mission in serveras mission in awakening. The game telling you to listen to the unit who was tricked into joining so you free them in shadow dragon and so on.

Make different options. Mug let's you steal a defeated units inventory but release the unit. Capture can capture and possibly recruit the unit but dump the inventory. I love both versions but I feel the very small number of useful units to capture in fates combined with the large cast if characters each with unique skills made it a very under utilized mechanic

Capture/kidnap was interesting in Fates, which is the only game I've played to have the ability. My favorite map for it was that one where you had to kill the people from that rival ninja clan in Hoshido. After you killed the leader, there was this single, unarmed Shrine Maiden who was left over and had to go for you to win the map. You could either kill her while she stood helplessly or you could sic Orochi on her and spam Capture until you beat her, assuming you had the Jail built in your castle.

You know what else I would love? For some playable characters to only be attainable by capture. For example; Suppose Anthony from Fire Emblem Fates Revelations was actually a character with supports and dialog but the only way to properly recruit him is to capture him. Yes I know Anthony is a character hardly anyone cares about but he was the first character I thought of. Same could be said for Palardo from Fire Emblem Three Houses.

Hey Faerghast, I know it's a bit random, but today I watched a video series made by a KZbinr named Soma's Corner, that connects the characters of FE three houses with tarot cards. Two episodes are out at the moment. In the video that I want to highlight is a video about Rhea and Edelgard. They are sharing the same card (High priestess) and how Byleth brings out the best out of them. That said both characters have some subtle differences. Worth a watch.

Maybe if you make "Capturing" a hit check instead of requiring you to reduce your opponent's HP to 0. Maybe make it so the unit is only captured for a limited amount of turns (let's say your build - enemy build = number of turns the capture will last). when the captured unit shakes you off, they will start fighting back. Essentially it would now be a way to temporarily remove threats. I think it should also be available only to certain weapons (spread across multiple weapon types), so now not only is it a resource, it's also something that only specific enemy units can do to you.

I really liked the idea of the capture mechanic in fates. Being able to capture these unique bosses in the game was great. My only two things I’d want them to improve on with this mechanic is 1) give the special bosses that we can capture some extra character/supports, and 2) let any unit in the army capture the enemy units. Sometimes the capture function being on just Niles and Orochi really sucked because of their hit rates if they’re not used enough beforehand.

A combination of those two Capture-systems to me sounds like it would be the ideal implementation of it, although maybe not being very fitting for an FE-game. Have everyone be able to Capture, like in Thracia, but if keep them captured until the end of the map, even generic enemies and capturable bosses, they get transfered as prisoners to your base and you can try to recruit them as additional units, or release them for other benefits. Wouldn't be all that different from Alear just going around adopting animals after every battle and putting them on a farm, I feel... and since stationary bases seem to be here to stay, having to have a prison somewhere wouldn't necessarily be a problem either.

I like capture too but I hope it goes beyond just a game mechanic. I want capturing to unlock new story branches and scenarios. Example 1: You capture a national hero of an enemy country who can make real changes for the better. You gain a very strong ally but that country crumbles and you face a stronger evil guy who should be crushed by your new unit if you don't recruit him/her. You kill that evil guy but still their people suffer so much they hate your forces for hundreds of year, making way for a hundred-year war (bad ending) Example 2: Enemy force captures your unit who is the love interest of another unit. The captured unit marries the leader of enemy force but is still loyal to your forces. Later you face a weakened enemy force when it should be impossible for you to defeat because your captured unit sabotages from within. At the end of battle your army wins but the captured unit is found dead. At despair, the lover of that unit dies along with your captured unit. You are able to achieve the impossible ending at the sacrifice of your unit getting captured. Just some quick thoughts. But I highly doubt IS will give us story routes or endings from capturing because it will be too much work for them :P

I think capture needs to be an item. You use it, and it's as if you had used the capture command: You go to the battle preview and choose a weapon. But you have reduced stats. For every hit you do in combat, the item loses 1 durability. You can buy these in armories and such across the game.

I once did a capture units only run of Birthright, legitimately one of the most fun runs I’ve ever done of the game. I captured a soldier right near the start of the game called Stefan, called him my main lord (unique class, no promotion, MUST BE A LORD!) and pumped him full of every stat booster in the game because soldier growths are AWFUL! But he did manage to take down Garon XD.

The thing that always bothered me about Capture in Fates was that we had playable units on the other side of the war because of the multiple playthroughs, but you could never actually capture them. These were full characters with data already in the game, and while, sure, the lords would probably, narratively be impossible to capture... why not retainers? Or even miscellaneous units like Benny and Charlotte? I don't understand why they had an entire mechanic to steal units from the other army but never let you take the actually fleshed out characters that could make that interesting. It's such a huge missed opportunity

Fates capture is basically impossible to implement in modern fe. Modern fe games often give generics really balloned stats compared to your own units on higher difficulties. As it was, it was borderline game breaking in fates and even included restrictions where some skills were removed upon capture.

They could give the enemies a default statline, then apply a separate addition to it for harder difficulties. Or they could give every enemy default personal growths and use those to recalculate their stats. Then after you capture them, their stats change to the new values.

Perhaps it is impossible to bring capture back fully; however, it could be cool if they allowed Capture to come back for a single mission. Imagine our main lord's army is duking it out with the enemy army next to a neutral nation's territory. The enemy army convinces the local peasants that the lord's army is going to take their food and daughters. Enraged the peasants take up their arms. The player has the option of capturing the peasants instead of executing them. Depending on the number of peasants captured, the lord will either condemn, reward, or join the player's army.

Oooh imagine if Capture was a combat art in three houses instead. Maybe one of the authority level skills? Edit: Plus you don't need to waste a personal skill for it~

Capture is great, especially if it allows you to get access to otherwise impossible to get skills and such. Fates should have had even more capturable bosses, imo. Enough to build an entire balanced team would have been nice, so you can make things like a boss run.

One thing I would change about fates capture system would be to make it available to all units somehow, while giving Niles and Orochi improved versions.

Lack of personality kinda made Fates Capture feel like having to work for the anonymous henchmen in Shadow Dragon. I thought it was a big letdown because, given the emotional tension that Fates was trying to create, you would think that capturing characters already sympathetic to you (or that Corrin desperately wants to get out of harm's way) would be a no-brainer. But oh no, they're story relevant, and therefore locked. And that's kind of the biggest problem with Fates's writing; the characters just arbitrarily do what they need to do for the plot to happen. There is a colossal amount of potential in Capture if the game is actually written for it, instead of it being solely a play mechanic.

I actually thought this game mechnic from fates was fun the ability too play as generic units is cool its a shame it never came back if I remember correctly I think kandas was going too be a side character before being downgraded too a paralog boss

I’ve wanted the fates capture to return so bad you have no idea like when I played conquest on lunatic it was fun seeing what skills the enemies had they normally shouldn’t but on birthright honestly capture was only good for the bosses as the generic enemies didn’t have any unique skills which was really disappointing :/

Not having any units that were fully functional, complete with personal skills and support lines, that were available exclusively through capturing in Fates was a missed opportunity.

I think it's a bit of a stretch to say that they got capture "right" in Fates, when the entire mechanic is tethered to a single unit on each route. Don't like that unit? Too bad, you need to use *specifically them* if you want to interact with the mechanic. And if that unit happens to die? Well, with them goes the entire capture mechanic, making the jail completely pointless from that point on.

Here's another video idea. I want to hear you talk about bringing back the idea of choosing between two units. I'm thinking for a redux of the Tellius games they should give you a choice between recruiting Makalov or the scrapped unit called Heather (Or whatever Nintendo would call her if she's separate from the Radiant Dawn character) Not saying they should have it effect recruiting another unit like how in Binding Blade recruiting Elphin lead to getting Bartre & Larum leading to recruiting Echidna. But it's still an idea I wouldn't mind hearing you talk about in the future.

Nah exclusive characters are dumb, one always ends up being way better than the other, and it’s a feel bad if your favourite character is just worse than the other option.

@@Rabbitlord108 I don’t like malakov either but it’s just a bad idea in general, shadow dragon I believe already makes you do something like that where you choose someone to “die” to save marth and any time you see talk about it people always talk about it from an optimisation pov and how it’s always optimal to sacrifice gordin because archers suck. And new mystery also does something like that where you pick which characters you want in the prologue chapters but there’s always an optimal choice.

@@ninjakirby777 Good point. I also find it sad that the character who was canonically sacrificed to recruit Gordin in the added prologue chapters is the new character. Which has me asking why even make a new character in the first place?

Dude Capture was one of if not my FAVORITE parts of FE5. Kinda disappointed by Fates 'Capture', but Capture in FE5 almost made up for Stamina. ALMOST

Honestly I liked the capture mechanic in fates. I mean sure was a royal pain to use at first but it was a bit fun as I got used to it. No honestly it would be nice in the next fire Emblem game if they were able to bring back the steel mechanic such as being able to steal weapons or support items.
