Gavin Watson joined the local skinhead gang in his hometown of Berkhamsted at the tender age of 14. For the next ten years his camera was always in his pocket, as he photographed skinhead culture from the inside, going well beyond the stereotypes. His photographs get behind the shaved heads, the swastikas and the steel-toed boots, unveiling a complex culture with its very own codes, style and attitude that will leave a deep mark on Britain.

What a blast from the past. I lived behind Gavin and family. I have had a couple of the books for a few years now and will leave them for the next generation in my family. I am 70 now but remember well serving most of the crew their fish n chips (big dish micklefield) loved the video. Thank you.

What a load of bullshit. It was me that designed the CRUCIFIED SKIN image. A logo that a load of skinheads chose to adopt as their own. Puzzles me that they still haven't sussed out what it really stands for. Best head to the laser tattoo removal clinic, lads!!!

Ok Michael, if you’re the real artist, trilby hats to you, I always liked that black and white skinhead artwork, especially the crucified skin , always thought it Was to represent skinhead being crucified by the media etc , was it not? And the black and white nod to 2tone Walt jabsto ? Enlighten us with your thoughts/ true meaning of your art

Alright there mate, the truth is that my CRUCIFIED SKIN "Image" means nothing at all. I didn't spend a long time putting it together, just sat down and it sort of "flowed out" of me. I think it kind of acts like a mirror, and other lad's put their own interpretation and meanings onto it. Got full copyright, and all the original artwork in a very safe place.

Good luck with that mate, should be interesting and raise a few eyebrows, never got the link with song/poem off the united skins album, plus seen some old interviews in music mags from back then but can hardly read em, kinda get the gist of it , can’t say I remember it properly, picture of you in black and white shirt rang a bell but that’s it, was probably in my last year at school then , saw your artwork in the last resort catalogue
