Capturing Skomer Puffins in Action

In this video I head down to Wales for five days of wildlife photography, my main stop will be the Skomer Island where I will spend a couple of days photographing the puffins as they come and go from the Atlantic sea with a mouthful of sand eels for their pufflings.
I took a walk along the Pembrokeshire coast following part of the footpath where I got to see a pod of Bottlenose Dolphins a kestrel beautifully hovering just feet away from me fulmars razorbills and guillemots all enjoying the fine weather during the end of the breeding season.
Photographing the puffins in flight as they came into land with mouths full of sand eels proved to be quite challenging, and I only managed to capture just a couple of brief shots as they came into land.
Ideally, I should have been on the island of Skomer around 3 weeks ago in the height of the breeding season leaving it this late meant that at least half the population had already left, ideally, you want to be on the island around the 15th of May, to get the best of the puffins on the island of Skomer.
Still I had a fantastic trip photographing the wildlife and the seabirds a meeting fellow subscribers on this fantastic journey to Skomer Island off the Welsh coast

Fantastic mate, loved the different locations and the varied species and facts! I love Wheatears and especially the males in all their finery, and Puffins well they are magical and the close encounters you get really does give you a chance to hone in on the detail of the birds. Love the photos of puffins with small fish in their beak… Unfortunately, puffins are a rare occurrence up on the northern California coast where I live. I have seen them in Alaska, but that was before I wasinto bird photography. And I did not see them on my trip to Scotland and Ireland.

Hi Fred yeh me too, I spent 3 months in Alaska and had a fab time kayaking around Prince William sound for 3 weeks Island hoping, the only downside was the noseeums, they are on the same par as the Scottish midges 🤣😛👍
