An excellent talk by Martin Lewis. I am someone who is in the process of working with my Church and CAP to establish a Life Skills Course. On a personal level, I have experienced financial difficulties (although fortunately not debt) through being made redundant. Twice. The first time was back in 2010 when I rejoiced as I had an excellent redundancy package - ~15 months take home pay! What could possibly go wrong? Quite a lot as it happened - my background is in Library and Information studies; not a great profession to be in at this current time - add to that the recession ... I ended up renting out my property (property was not selling at the time and it was valued at less than I paid but more than I owed on the mortgage) and moving 250 miles away to live with my parents. On arrival at home it became clear that my Father had health problems - a diagnosis of Alzheimers was quick to follow. Fortunately, owing to my parents saving habit and the luxury of final salary pensions my parents were able to support me financially as I and my sister supported them through the maze of financial advice and form filling for power of attorney, caring costs and eventually the cost of having to be in a dementia care home. My father was released from his dementia 'hell' in 2016. Once working again (on a much lower salary than before) I stayed in the family home as my mother by this time was physically frail and unable to live independently by herself. Recently, I was made redunant again. I attended a CAP job club with a view to observing how CAP works on a practical day to day level. The course has given me food for thought on some of the issues I have previously encountered when searching for work. At one point I was faced with the reality of going for a job which would have meant moving away, paying the mortgage on my flat (it is currently unoccupied and on the market with a sale pending) whilst having to pay rent on another property (or room in a house/flat) and having to find a care home for my Mother (which would result in losing the family home to pay for her care) ... Fortunately or unfortunately, I did not get that job and am now looking for a volunteering role which would give me the opportunity of getting to know an organisation and hopefully lead to paid employment! "Change Of Circumstances" is the real killer!!

Martin Lewis you are a Legend. CAP - I would not be here today it weren't for you, Rich Page-Jones was my debt coach and he too, was a life-saver.

Surely he's only recommended it for the finance rather than the church.
