I think Dr. Tobias Capwell is a great speaker who sounds really passionate, I really enjoyed contents like this, any chance of us getting similar content or seeing more of Tobias Capwell in the future?

Fantastic stuff! It's great to learn the culture and mindset of people whose fighting techniques we study; maybe I'm reading too much into it, however, I do believe that it helps us form an idea of how fighting styles fit into a society, what motivates them, what the culture's qualities do to influence combat.

Despite being fascinated by medieval effigies and art, I had absolutely no idea that I'm from really close to where all these amazing alabaster effigies were sculpted. Who knew....

Excellent again! Wonder if in an episode they suddenly pop off camera on each side and we hear some rustling and clanking and then the move back in view.. in armour! And sword! And sparring camera!... , wait, perhaps not in a church but still the seamless transition from leaned exposition to Lancastrian v French action would be thrilling!

Fantastic video, great explanation. I would very much encourage you or Dr. Capwell to visit Betanzos (Galicia, Spain) and its church of Saint Francis. There are some great effigies there of knights and noblemen from the XIV and XV centuries: Aras Pardo, the Counts of Andrade, the Vilousaz family...

You may cover this in the later portion of this, but do you have an estimate for how much that amount of alabaster weighs?
@scholagladiatoria8 жыл бұрын
This isn't something we discussed - I'm afraid I have no idea! Heavy :-)
@dlatrexswords8 жыл бұрын
I admittedly know little about hauling in that period, but I'd imagine it would have been quite the swine to ship intact!!
@ktoth298 жыл бұрын
A quick search online reveals the density of alabaster to be about 170lbs per cu. ft. Assuming the effigy to represent an average sized human with a displacement of 2.5 cu. ft. the effigy would weigh approximately 425lbs per person. This of course is a very rough estimate.
@DavidB55018 жыл бұрын
As a rough rule of thumb, stone weighs between 2 and 3 tonnes per cubic metre. Alabaster is stated in one source to weigh 2700 kg per m^3. These two effigies together appear to be about a metre wide, a bit less than 2 metres long, and up to about a third of a metre deep, which would give a maximum volume of about 2/3 of a cubic metre and max weight of about 1.8 tonnes. But the space actually taken up by the alabaster is obviously much less - maybe only a quarter. That would still give a weight of about half a tonne.
@SnowyCamel8 жыл бұрын
I did a bit of a rough calculation. using this formula: density of alabaster * (average weight of a human male+ average weight of plate armor*(density of human / density of iron)) / density of human and these values i googled density of alabaster = 2.75 10^3 *kg/m^3 average weight of a human male in england = 84kg weight plate armor = around 25kg density of a human = slightly more than 1. density of a human = 985 kg/m^3 density of iron = 7.874 g/cm^3 i got an approximate weight of 243.2 Kg per effigy

Question: Is the effigy life-sized? Because he's way smaller than an adult human modern male. (Yes, I know that people in the past were smaller, that's why I'm asking).
@ME-hm7zm8 жыл бұрын
They weren't much smaller, if at all. Matt goes into that in one of his videos.
@orlock208 жыл бұрын
from the camera angle, the feet look really small compared to the rest of his body especially when factoring in that the effigy is suppose to be wearing boots. I'm guessing part of it is that the camera is giving us a distorted view where close up objects look a lot larger than images far away compared to real life.
Wealth accumulation has become ridiculous; saying he had 10x the income of a common knight means nothing today. Even 50 years ago that would have meant something; that's about what CEOs were paid over the second best paid worker. Last I checked, that was 250x-1000x.
